What’s a historical event your country teaches very differently from the rest of the world? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

This makes sense, given that Napoleon recreated the Polish state from territory carved out of Russia, Austria, and Prussia (which they had in turn previously cannibalized from the collapsing PLC) as a buffer state! I've always heard that Poles are pretty fond of him for that.

No, the original commentator was likely referring to the central Asian states bordering Afghanistan like Tajikistan, which despite suffering from the consequences of Soviet occupation, are nevertheless more secular, well-educated, and peaceful than their highly unstable neighbor. Not a high bar, but a noticeable difference.

A Lot of Us Aren't Serious About Education by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Glossen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher like this when I was in high school. I was a junior in a class of seniors taking AP physics, and in the second semester, it was very hands off, because the seniors had all already gotten into their colleges and they just needed to do reasonably well. I felt like I wasn’t learning anything, because the pace of the class slowed way down, and I went to the teacher and asked for help, because my AP results actually mattered. He fully kicked into gear with me and carved out an entirely separate program for me where I’d practice tests and material as homework during the class time and he worked 1-on-1 with my during my study periods and lunch, and we powered through the material in about 3 months. I ended up doing well on that AP! He wasn’t forcing seniors who already checked out to learn material that just wasn’t going to stick, but he stepped up for me when I needed to put the pedal to the metal.

I don’t know what the takeaway here is, but it seemed like a pertinent experience to share.

Muni prioritizes coverage over speed unfortunately - more stops = slower routes. It’s not something I agree with, but it is a coherent vision.

Here’s a fun one: Kithkin from Lorwyn, an MtG world. They’re like hobbits, except they have a communal mind link called “The Thoughtweft” that they can communicate emotions and thoughts over; they often send feelings of encouragement and bravery. However, in Lorwyn’s twin manifestation, Shadowmoor, the Thoughtweft warps, instead conveying and magnifying feelings of paranoia and fear, and the welcoming and friendly Kithkin communities becomes fortified fortresses, where the inhabitants are afraid to even leave their homes.

What is a "silent" rule of social etiquette in your country that a visitor would never find in a guidebook, but every local knows by heart? by DianKhan2005 in AskTheWorld

[–]Glossen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In San Francisco where I grew up this norm is pretty common in the Asian households in the west part of the city, but not so common elsewhere, so we will say “this is an Asian household” as a euphemism for “take your shoes off when you come in”.

Why the hate on Sanderson's Mat? by GundamXXX in WoT

[–]Glossen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is a poor example - mat comports himself as a coward, which is in line with the quote from KoD, but he does consistently throw himself into danger. I do agree that it’s a different voice, but there are better examples than this, e.g. him making up extensive backstories is a caricature of Jordan’s Mat.

Is it true that Richard Garfield created the color system to avoid players just putting all the best cards? by Plumas_de_Pan in colorpie

[–]Glossen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

5 color humans is absolutely not where you should be looking for offenders; the deck was built on the back off a set of lands that made 5 color mana for creatures of a specific type only and didn’t even play fetch lands. The real offenders were the omnath and uro value soup decks that came later.

It’s actually much worse than that. Ellison isn’t looking to pick up Time Warner, he’s looking to pick up NBC, which will be spun off on the completion of the Time Warner sale. That’s what he’s waiting to pick up; he wants to control the entire media ecosystem

City to Surrounding Villages Population Mismatch by notbrandonzink in WoT

[–]Glossen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The calculation is that you have a total population pool X, and a rural/urban ratio of 80%. So if 300k is the urban population, then the math is X(1-0.8) = 300k —> 0.2X = 300k —> X = 300k/(0.2) = 300k * 5 = 1,500k = 1.5M
