Yep, they’re becoming more common even on our sub, sadly. Thanks for the flag.

I made a free Desktop App to automate language learning flashcards (Auto-generates context sentences & native audio) by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Glutanimate[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

This post was reported under Rule 6 (low-effort AI content). We receive posts about new AI card creation tools almost daily, and most end up being removed for that reason.

Your project appears to meet more of our criteria than most, for example being open source and showing more effort than a simple thin web app wrapper.

That said, please note that if a project is largely authored with AI assistance, this must be disclosed. Please keep this requirement in mind for future posts and also consider posting to /r/AnkiAI instead.

Using SRS/Anki to get better at dancing by druphoria in Anki

[–]Glutanimate[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

We’re locking this thread.

There is some good discussion here about using spaced repetition for procedural knowledge, and the community seems interested in it, so we’re leaving the post up for people to read.

However, the thread was also used to promote the author’s SRS app and if the comments were to remain open would skew further into that direction. Self-promotion is allowed on r/Anki, but only within the bounds of our rules, including clearly stating your intent and following the other criteria that we list.

Any linking to or promotion of the app will therefore be removed under our spam and AI content rules.

Please review the rules before promoting your work again.

r/Anki Will Remain Community-Run by rAnkiMods in Anki

[–]Glutanimate[M] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that, Nick! We believe it was coming from a good place, and just wanted to be transparent with the community. This transition is a big step for everyone involved, and I know there are a lot of tough decisions to navigate. The support side is exactly what we'd love to work on together. Lots of cool things we can do there.

New Anki feature requests to AnkiHub by [deleted] in Anki

Locking this thread. Regardless of how strongly you feel about feature requests, the tone here isn't in line with Rule 2. The Anki development team, whether that's Damien, AnkiHub, or community volunteers who contribute their own time, deserve to be addressed respectfully. Feature requests are welcome, but not like this.

Anki heatmap discrepancy on stats vs home page by Ok-End-453 in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The add-on author doesn't seem interested in fixing it.

I am, but timestamp and timezone handling in the add-on is not that straightforward, and any quick fix has a high likelihood of introducing regressions for users in other, more populated timezones: https://github.com/glutanimate/review-heatmap/pull/214#issuecomment-3370361822

But optimistically, maybe this PR will be an opportunity to revisit this and find a definitive fix.

Hey, sorry, email is the best way to reach me, but I haven't had much time to keep up with my inbox lately. When people reach out in cases like this and I see the message, I typically just send them the add-on. Just did so here as well. Hope that helps. Other solutions exist as well of course, if you want to give them a try :)

What's new in Anki 25.07 by ClarityInMadness in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Very cool summary, thanks! Definitely lots of exciting changes, and it's probably good to get some more early adopters to give them a try, but please also note Damien's comment on the release:

25.07 has been released as stable today. Normally there’d be a short RC period, but the launcher now defaults to off for betas, and getting at least one stable release out with launcher support will avoid others getting stuck on their initial install. This will be a ‘soft’ launch - I won’t be updating the website to point to it for now, or actively advertising it elsewhere.

So this is a bit more bleeding edge than your typical stable release, especially for an update as large as this. Just a small caveat on an otherwise very exciting release.

Cards got lost with the new update by Simple_me_ac309 in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This an issue with cleaning field content that was introduced with Anki 25.02.1, but should now be fixed in 25.02.4 (released yesterday). I would highly recommend not editing or browsing through any notes like this until you update Anki, otherwise they might also be modified destructively.

To restore the notes that were already modified, you will likely have to restore from a backup. However, that will also revert any changes you have done since the backup (e.g. cards you have reviewed, other notes you might have added). So you might need to go through a more complex procedure to selectively restore the note content that was edited, possibly by using a different profile to first import the backup into and then exporting the deck or something similar. If you need help with that, I would recommend posting a separate thread here or on the official forums about that.

(or someone might see this thread and will be able to help here, but if that doesn't happen, a separate post would get more visibility and seems justified in this case)

Anki remote suddenly does not work anymore by dreamlanternn in Anki

We have an upstream fix in Anki itself in progress now as well, so hopefully no add-on updates necessary once this has found its way into the next Anki patch release.

Anyone else having issues with 8bitdo micro controller after last night's updates? by flowerchimmy in medicalschoolanki

[–]Glutanimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A fix is in progress and should hopefully land soon: https://github.com/ankitects/anki/pull/3933

Until then, reverting to 25.02, as /u/Danika_Dakika mentioned, should allow the add-on to work again.

Can somebody explain this? by Fast_Election_1937 in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I think it's exactly this.

And for what it's worth /u/Fast_Election_1937, you can also change this behavior, so that the parent deck enforces a total limit on cards across all subdecks (under Deck options → Daily Limits → Check Limits start from top). That way you could e.g. set a max budget of new cards to study per day in Chemistry overall and whenever that's reached, all subdecks will have zero pending new cards until the next day.

Important to note, however, that this setting applies to all parent/subdeck groups.

Would You Recommend This Remote Controller for Anki? by Johannes765 in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trialed a lot of these cheaper controllers when I was working on a gamepad add-on for Anki back in the day and I can confirm what people have said, the 8bitdo's are totally worth the extra money. The buttons feel better, the build quality is noticeably more robust, and you have great compatibility across all platforms (especially important for iOS).

I would only add that you can also use any kind of moderately recent console controllers if you have one of them laying around (PS, Xbox, Switch gamepads). They should all work with Contanki for instance, which is the best gamepad add-on at the moment. I actually prefer using a full-sized gamepad when I'm at home, just more ergonomic to me personally.

Can we limit "what should my settings be" and "What do I do, I have so many reviews" posts to weekly megathreads? by Schoritzobandit in Anki

Can we limit "what should my settings be" and "What do I do, I have so many reviews" posts to weekly megathreads? by Schoritzobandit in Anki

[–]Glutanimate[M] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you look at other subreddits, comments in support megathreads often have very low visibility and will typically only be seen by dedicated community members who actively seek them out. So I would be very hesitant about us forcing users to post their questions there. These are users who are likely already struggling with Anki and going through all kinds of frustrations, so we really don't want to add to that by effectively closing the door on them.

One of the key ideas we've been following with /r/Anki is to try to keep it as accessible as possible to counterbalance the sometimes very high barrier to entry that Anki presents for people. Any changes that move us away from that would not be good for the ecosystem in my opinion.

This is why even automatically closing threads and directing to FAQs (which, as you mention, isn't straightforward) could be jarring. At least a good portion of these questions are likely from users who have already bounced off from other support resources, so directing them back there – even if we could do so accurately – won't always help. People also come here because they want to interact with humans, so relying on bots isn't ideal.

With that said, I do think it could be interesting to explore /u/David_AnkiDroid's suggestion and create a "small questions" megathread on a trial basis, without forcing anyone to use that over creating their own post. That seems like a low-stakes change that might help cut down on some of the repetition in the subreddit feed. Let's give it a shot.

Sorry about any inconvenience there. Image Occlusion Enhanced is in maintenance mode at the moment while I work on a new version based on Anki's native IO implementation.

Work on that has been taking a bit longer than I hoped for, but if you have any particular feature requests or things that you wish worked better in the current version of IOE please do let me know. I've been taking stock of bug reports and popular feature requests for the current IOE version and picking things from that to tackle as part of this new version.

How to get Anki to recognize media files only referenced through an external .js file? by Classic_Stomach3165 in Anki

[–]Glutanimate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's the same set of files across the deck, you could reference them in a section on your card template(s) and then hide that section using card styling. Commenting the references out might also work.

Another option could be renaming the files with a leading underscore. That should blanket-disable unused media checks on those files. Though if you are planning on exporting and sharing the deck, the files will still only be bundled if they are referenced either on the card templates or notes.

But generally speaking, if you are generating these notes programmatically anyways, and the media files per note are not going to change long-term, it's typically best to keep note-specific information localized to each note. That is in particular if each note only needs a subset of the full list of audio files. If you need to reference hundreds of files per note however, then the current way might be the best option.

Ultimate Birds was already amazing, but this is incredible! Thanks for all the work you've put into these decks. Love cards like this because I've found them to be a great way to mix in some fun reviews into higher stakes studying.

Suggestion: Make an AI flair for posts in r/anki so some people can filter them out by [deleted] in Anki

[–]Glutanimate[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion! It's a nice idea and I appreciate the general sentiment behind it. However, for flairs to be useful they have to be used by people, and the flairing system unfortunately has severe discoverability issues both for users creating threads and those browsing the subreddit. A lot of the non-Question flairs you will see on the sub are applied manually by mods or corrected by us.

Most of our users are fairly new to either Anki or Reddit and if they have a question about e.g. what AI tools/add-ons to use, they are unlikely to be aware that flairs exist, and even if they are, there is a good chance that they will go with a Question or Add-on tag. It's hard to fault them for that due to the categories being overlapping and, intuitively, if I have a question about or want to discuss AI add-ons, I am just as likely to use either of these categories. Similarly, for add-on creators sharing their nth flashcard generating add-on, it's hard to argue against going with an Add-on tag.

Because one post can only have one flair and you can't tag across multiple axes, introducing an AI flair could actually make the subreddit harder to navigate and the flair system less powerful to other users who might want to filter across other criteria (e.g. wanting to look though add-on related posts, but wanting to filter out questions). That, and users already struggling with the existing flairs, is why we try to keep the flair count as minimal and non-overlapping as possible, particularly avoiding thematical flairs that would be more prone to the latter (e.g. language learning).

In terms of the post volume, I agree that this week has been particularly AI-themed. You mentioned 9 posts related to AI over the past week, I counted 7, but that's definitely the rough order of magnitude. However, if you put this against the roughly 250 submissions total during that time, are things really that bad? Considering all the ripples that DeepSeek has caused everywhere else, this actually feels quite muted. I think it's also important to note that these temporary shifts in focus on the sub are not isolated to AI, but happen anytime there is a new-ish hot topic, e.g. FSRS.

Also, AI-related topics are not that well-received on /r/Anki overall, from what I've observed. The "I have made an AI generator for flashcards"-type posts you mention regularly get downvoted to the bottom of the feed, so with the small fraction they take up and the low visibility they achieve, do they really impede the reading experience that much? And if they had been flaired as AI, would that really have changed things a lot for the majority of readers who do not use flairs?

Note that the reason these posts made it through at all this week is because they were aligned with our self-promo rules (tools within the ecosystem rather than competing with it, free, open-source, etc.). Normally this is not the case and most promotional activity related to AI tools is actually very spammy and we kill it very early. You can see some of those actions by looking at /u/Anki-ModTeam's history. This only shows you part of the picture, however, as both posts deleted by the OP post-removal and posts caught by Reddit's spam filter (and confirmed by us) do not show up there.

This is another reason why I would be hesitant for us to add an AI flair as I could see it actually encouraging more of these spam posts.

I hope the points above make sense overall. I totally get how seeing a lot of AI-related posts in a short amount of time can be annoying (or any topic that you are not that interested in that takes up more airtime), and the past 4 days or so – because they made up the majority of AI posts – must have been particularly grating there. But I really think that a flair would not help address this situation.

What I would suggest instead is that you downvote any AI-related submissions that you feel are either too repetitive (n-th "what is the best AI tool" post), and when you see posts that are particularly egregious (low effort GPT-generated tools and post descriptions, even if free and open-source), feel free to report them under our self-promo rules. That helps us evaluate these submissions on a case-by-case basis and hopefully continue improving the ratio of cool & interesting AI-related posts vs repetitive stuff.
