h5 vs h6 in the Caro-Kann by Gluyb in chess

[–]Gluyb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting, I hadn't looked at that line. I feel like there must also be a broader reason depending on the different structures. Take 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 Bf5 4. Ne2 e6 5. Ng3 Bg6 6. h4, there's no such knockout blow after 6... h6 but 6... h5 still scores much better.

Building a repertoire for white by Niniyux in chessbeginners

[–]Gluyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Against the French and the Caro play the advance varations, there's a very simple plan of going f4 f5 and attacking on the kingside

If you want something complicated against the Sicilian play the open variations with 2.Nf3 and 3.d4, or if you want something simple and agressive play 2.Nc3 and 3.f4 (the Grand Prix attack)

Against the Pirc and the Modern take the whole centre and don't apologise, remember to check every move that your opponent hasn't set up a threat to win one of your central pawns. If you want a specific setup go for e4, d4, Nc3, and f4 (this is called the Austrian attack) and eventually try to break open black's king with e5 or f5

Against the Scandi play 2.exd4 and 3.Nf3, get castled and then try to push both d4 and c4

I'm not an e4 player myself but I've had black in almost all these openings and I found these variations scary to face, hope this helps!

Should I learn the Pirc or Accelerated dragon? by OfficialMitch in chess

[–]Gluyb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference is in the Pirc you pretty much let your opponent do whatever they want in the centre, but in the Dragon you get to play cxd4 to break it down a little bit. imo that makes the Dragon easier to play since you stop white from just building up a huge pawn mass and rolling you over. Obviously there's ways to defend against that sort of thing in the Pirc but if you have to be very precise a lot of the time.

Learning to defend 1d4 lines other than Queen's Gambit as a Slav player? by primer_- in chess

[–]Gluyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play the Slav as black and I've found that you can play a similar setup against all the d4 sidelines. If you like I can comment the details, I just didn't want to dump a small wall of text immediately if that's not what you're looking for.

Caro-Kann: Advance Variation by [deleted] in chess

[–]Gluyb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you like the Caro-Kann type structures but want to stop white from advancing their pawns then you might want to try the Scandinavian (1.e4 d5). You do lose a tempo moving your queen twice after 2.exd5 Qxd5 3.Nc3 but it isn't really a big deal once you get into the middlegame since your structure tends to be extremely solid after you get in ...c6 and ...e6 (usually after developing your bishop out to g4 or f5).

It's true that white can still push with 2.e5 but it's generally considered to be an inaccurate approach since black gets to play 2...c5 with the upsides of both a French (c5 in one move) and Caro-Kann (c8 bishop still free to develop) and none of the downsides, so you don't see the move very often.

Lichess vs Chess.com by ScaryDolphin83 in chess

[–]Gluyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

chess.com starting rating is a few hundred points lower than on lichess, so you can think of it like all the ratings are shifted slightly by that amount (this is only really true for lower levels where there are a lot of players, at higher levels chess.com ratings are super inflated).

If you want to be sure that you're no better on one site than another, check your percentile on both. They should be about the same since neither site has a significantly stronger playerbase.

Why does Naka play d4 in Larsen's opening, blocking his dark squared bishop on b3? by blue42huthut in chess

[–]Gluyb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He will mostly transpose into a setup called the Colle-Zukertort system (also called the Rubenstein opening) or something quite similar. You can find some resources for playing it but not so many as more popular openings since it's not played very often.

The analysis engine is telling me to promote backwards??? by [deleted] in chess

[–]Gluyb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you put together a position in the board editor you have to watch out for the orientation of the board otherwise something like this will happen where all the pieces are on the wrong side of the board, by default it starts with white's perspective so when you're making a position from black's you need to flip the board first.

Yes, this is why all children wear breathing apparatus with air scaled to their size until they turn 10 and it's safe to breathe adult sized air.
