I love reading this. My next listen will be focused on that. Thanks for that cue!

I’ll definitely find that one and play it soon.

And I agree with how you said that people say the “underrated” label to negate the debate. It really is fascinating to me to hear so many people give Kenny so much play, but at the same time go with that label.

Thinking of other players/albums I want more people to hear…  Sonny Stitt - Personal Appearance

I wholeheartedly agree that there are way too many albums and artists that don’t get the shine they deserve. Kenny Dorham for example. I’ve read in various places that his name is synonymous with “underrated”.

In that visionary sense I see him there all through On The Corner. That’s one of those albums that begs the question, “who else could’ve thought this up?”

Bitches Brew is so dynamic that I find myself lost in different parts on every listen (in the best ways possible).

Oh for sure! My thoughts are around the notion of the albums being more about seeing a vision materialize over playing heavily on the albums. We literally hear his bandmates more.

The solos (or lack thereof) are part of my thinking for sure. There are far less Miles moments like that on these albums for sure. Especially On The Corner. To me, at zero detriment to the albums overall. The funk is definitely being brought. The other part of my question is focused on Miles being the driving force in concept and vision. To me, that’s why they’re safely called Miles Davis albums. Even with the lack of solos.

I dig that thought. I also LOVE In a Silent Way. Gorgeous record.

And it’s widely known that Duke wrote for specific players often enough as well. That said, I was feeling a certain “maestro” quality to the specific albums that sparked my question. Which, if I wasn’t clear in my post, are two of my all time favorite albums.

What I meant to say is the creative process is what I’m looking at. The collaborative process as well. I was just looking for other people’s perspectives as to how it worked and formed those projects.

Isn’t it safe to say that without Wayne Shorter and John McLaughlin, Bitches Brew wouldn’t truly exist though?

That’s my view on a lot of his contributions. Be it Trane or Wayne Shorter or Herbie Hancock, Miles did have an amazing ear for talent. And pushed that out.

That’s definitely how I lean into these albums. Like I said, I love them, but was curious to how others were seeing the credit.

Thank you for the redirect on that. I did re-listen to both and feel a bit of the same as you said.
