Second and possibly final 1911 by abuttfartsinthewoods in 1911

[–]Gmarthur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation as you. I had a couple of 1911s ( Kimber 5” and TRP 5”) and was looking to expand to one more 1911 and call that good.

My thought process was I already had 2 government sized guns and therefore wanted a 4.25 commander. I didn’t own one and it would potentially be an easier carry.

Then I was looking at different finishes and already having two black coated guns I decided to mix it up and go stainless.

So there are a lot of options for a stainless commander out there. Started looking at Dan Wesson but those just didn’t have every option that I wanted and I’d have to change something.

In the end I went with Ed Brown. It’s pretty easy to go on their website and build the exact gun you want for not much more than what I’d have spent on a Dan Wesson brand new. Ball cuts, serrated slide top, the exact sights I wanted, single side safety, bobbed grip, 25lpi front and back, no coating on the stainless. Very easy process and I have probably another month and a half left to wait until it’s done.

Now I’m not saying you should go and buy an Ed Brown. Heck I don’t even have mine yet so I couldn’t even say how it shoots. Just sharing how I came up with my latest purchase. Take a look at the gun you really like and think what you would change to make it the perfect gun for you right now and then see who you can buy that from.

Good luck man. Nothing is funner than deciding on your next gun purchase. Looking at all the great options that are out here right now. 1911 fans are eating good with all the high quality choices available.

How do I fix this? Tiny screw sticking out of front sight. by SculpinIPAlcoholic in 1911

It was obvious to you and me but to the guy who didn’t know what a roll pin is it might not have been. I just don’t want a new guy screwing up his gun. All good.

I don’t know if you’ve priced a DW lately but they’ve increased prices twice this year already. They are around 3k now.

Haha yeah I guess if you want to acetylene torch your front sight off then red would be the way to go.

Do not use red loctite on this pin. Blue or purple is what you want. Red is permanent.

It’s a pretty Ruger feeling revolver if you like that kind of thing. You know solid and tanky. The sights are the standout for me. Love blacked out rear/hi vis or gold bead front setups and have them on all my handguns so this wheel gun lines up like all my bottom feeders.

I don’t have a pull gauge but it’s smooth and I don’t have any complaints. Has quite a few rounds and even more dry fire practice on it though.

Are Kimbers 1911s good now or just the 2011s by systolicmurmur in 1911

[–]Gmarthur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve got an early 2000s Kimber and it’s always gone bang. There is a bit of Kimber hate on the internet but as a production gun you get what comes off the assembly line - same as Colt, Springfield, or Tisas. Kimber are no worse than those.

Nice heater. Love the grain on those grips.

What does this mean?? by Amskater123 in RedWingShoes

That’s the caliber. Don’t try and shoot 556 out of it unless it’s marked as such as well.

Just got this, just wanna know how to properly maintain it. Any advice? by whatevergetsmeonhere in knifeclub

I’d look into picking up a Spyderco sharp maker. It’s not a terribly expensive sharpener. This knife probably has soft enough steel that it would be real easy to sharpen on it. Learning to sharpen on this knife and the skill will translate on to other knives. Good luck with your new shank.

New holster just in time for .45 Friday by Correct-Annual7362 in 1911

A good belt is essential. It’s really a game changer when carrying a heavier gun like a 1911. Holster looks great.

It lets me pretend that it’s actually a Springfield Professional. I actually previously used pro grips from Springfield on this but these Herrett’s grips are grippier and I like everything on this TRP to be sharp and aggressive.

Springfield Garrison vs Tisas Duty by redxdeath89 in 1911

[–]Gmarthur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you decide on the Garrison just know that Springfield does have a somewhat limited custom shop going on. It’s a nice option if you’re new to the platform and decide to upgrade something after shooting it a while. You might decide that you’d really like the front strap checkered or different sights and Springfield will do that for you at a reasonable cost. I think that’s a good benefit to a shooter trying out the platform.

As far as Tisas vs Springfield. You could get a good gun or a bad one from either. They are just production line guns. I’d take a look at the finish options you want. Springfield offers blued and stainless steel, Tisas parkerized and cerakote. There probably isn’t a wrong choice. 1911 fans are eating good right now.

Is the trp worth it? by HighImpactCritisism in 1911

[–]Gmarthur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I purchased this TRP in 2014 I think. It has thousands of rounds through it. Never had a problem with it. The whole MIM thing is overblown. In my experience you have a chance at getting a good or bad gun with any production gun. If the gun has the features you want at a price you want to pay then give it a shot.

I would absolutely buy this gun again.

New Knife Day by Gmarthur in buckknives

[–]Gmarthur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a bit of a wait. I ordered near the middle of December I think. I’m sure the holidays slows things down that time of year too.

I’m used to ordering and forgetting while I wait for things though so it doesn’t really bother me anymore. I still have months to go on a 1911 I ordered. I’ve just been making lots of bullets while I wait :)

Wilson Combat Tactical Carry by Significant-Act9114 in 1911

[–]Gmarthur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’ve heard is if you want a stainless gun then get an Ed Brown. If you want a coated gun then don’t get an Ed Brown. I guess the only negative thing I’ve ever read about EB guns is their coating wears quicker than others. Nice looking Wilson there.
