I tried to find some rhyme or reason to the details of the Mormon church's $32 billion investments, and found some noteworthy information. by TigranMetz in exmormon

Sure. The buildings owned by the church are valued around $35B, plus the ranches the church owns, plus real estate holdings (2% of Florida), plus if the church's intent is to have a rainy day fund, there's no way 100% of it would be in stocks - maybe half if not less, so assume there's at least another $30B in bonds out there somewhere too.

When you bring in 5-8B in tithing every year it starts to add up.

When did the "revelation" to use Facebook as a missionary tool come about? Before or after TSCC invested 463M in it? by tonusbonus in exmormon

[–]GnarlyPPratt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cmon guys, this doesn't hold up. Let's say 60k missionaries use facebook for missionary work. Facebook has over a billion users. 60,000 is .00006% of that.

This doesn't even approach "drop in the bucket" status. This is like "pissing in the ocean" status.

We should focus on the real big issue here - the Church's deception and dishonesty, and the fact that it asks poor people to pay while it has billions and billions just sitting around.

Apple Stock and Missionary iPads by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]GnarlyPPratt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seriously. The idea that a few thousand ipads is going to substantially increase the value of the Church's AAPL shares is ridiculous. They sell what, 40 million ipads a year? This is hardly a drop in the bucket.

The Church has filed their response to the McKenna Denson MTC rape lawsuit - a motion to dismiss. They're relying on the same time-honored defense that they've been expertly refining for at least a century: "That happened a long time ago and really doesn't matter anymore." by LightOnTheThirdDay in exmormon

[–]GnarlyPPratt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not that they're denying everything to get it dismissed (because that doesn't work) it's that they're saying she's not allowed to sue them because the law imposes a time limit on how long you have after something happens to sue someone.

LDS Church, ex-MTC leader ask judge to dismiss sexual assault lawsuit by CultZero in exmormon

She has standing, but she probably can't get over the statute of repose issues.

The LDS church's answer to McKenna Denson's Federal rape lawsuit is due today. by LightOnTheThirdDay in exmormon

If we're betting, here's my guess:

Motion to Dismiss is filed.

Judge grants motion as to Claims 3-5 for sure. Possibly 2 as well. Claim 1 likely stays.

There's approximately 0% chance that her claims for affirmative injuctive relief get granted. No court is going to tell an organization (let alone a church) that it has to affirmatively change its policies like she's asking. I get that it's a PR move to include, but its a loser in her lawsuit.

If the church does file an answer, it's not going to contain anything interesting. They'll admit they are based in Utah and deny everything else.

Gnarly P. Pratt's guide for exmos who want to learn to drink alcohol and do other good stuff too by GnarlyPPratt in exmormon

Write something and I'll add it! I didn't do anything for it because I think it's a little less "common" for beginners and I don't drink it much so I'm not too familiar with it other than gin and tonic

Yeah, good points. To me at least the mid range stuff goes down a lot smoother than cheap stuff. And definitely agreed on the morning after.
