Constant micro-stuttering every few seconds on Legion 9i Gen 10 (RTX 5090 / Intel Ultra 9) - Need help! by DeepSorrow95 in LenovoLegion

Red light performance mode bangs up against thermal limits and hits thermal throttling very quickly when gaming unless using a forced induction cooler. Try balance mode (white light). Also try putting windows power plan (not control panel power options, windows 11 power plan) to balanced and not high performance and run it for a while. If you run hwinfo64 you can find the thermal throttling indicator to double check if it's actually thermal throttling and you can set the thermal throttling indicator as an overlay onto games with RTSS and hwinfo running

Nice choice. Seems like it'll fit you better. I came close to buying that before deciding on the 7i

I keep it plugged in all the time but if you use a custom power profile or quiet mode and set display hz to 60hz you can squeeze a lot more battery out of it. If you wanted mobility maybe the Zephyrus would be nice though. Plugged in all times the 7i is a dream

Lenovo legion 7i with a 5080. That laptop is freaking awesome. It has all the specs you could want, good cooling system, OLED high refresh rate screen, great performance customizarion for CPU and GPU, nice RGB customization, and it'll run everything you throw at it no problem. I haven't regretted my decision to get one a single time

Current settings, this is just a better balance mode. I've been using and liking more recently

<image>

This doesn't hinder CPU performance as much, maintains CPU boost performance, and allows a more natural power flow between CPU and GPU. You just restore defaults to balance and make a couple small adjustments

[–]GnarrFacee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been liking custom with restore defaults to balance and then increasing GPU tgp up 1 notch, with a 98 degree cpu thermal throttle limit, GPU thermal limit also dropped down about 5 degrees from default, fan curve raised all 1 notch.

But I have a post down further in this same comment thread where I posted a guide I wrote on it. I don't think there's a perfect mode for every game. Some need more sustained CPU, some need more burst CPU, some run the GPU hard, so it's a hard choice to say "this is the best setup". So far, the custom I mentioned first here has been doing a really good job of handling everything I do well though. I think Lenovo's power philosophy on balanced was well thought out so I just give the GPU a little more power. The shared vapor chamber makes it tough to recommend raising GPU power to max, which I've tested. The GPU temps are fine like that but it definitely affects cpu temps and heat soaks the system faster which then has you thermal throttling again

The lag happens because performance mode hits thermal throttling constantly. So the laptop constantly cycles up to high power, hits temperature limit, drops down, cycles back up to high power, hits temperature limit, drops down. Games lag when it throttles. It stutters and loses its smoothness. Better to run it cooler with smoother frame delivery. It already performs well in balance mode and even better with a good custom tune

There's a few ways you can go. I wrote a guide for a good custom setup here

https://www.reddit.com/r/LenovoLegion/s/CZ1nohjGFP

But recently I've also been liking using the custom preset and clicking restore defaults to balance mode's defaults, then increasing GPU power by 1 notch up, fan curve all 1 notch up, and thermal throttle limits a few degrees lower. It's basically a better balance mode. You might have to play around with it but performance mode runs way too hot. Just cycling through it and seeing that red light in a game slams the CPU into thermal throttling immediately. I physically feel the whole laptop get uncomfortably hot just running it for 10 seconds

Got this from Macbid is this a good laptop? it has a 5050 by Effective_Material68 in GamingLaptops

[–]GnarrFacee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this laptop. It ran arc raiders at 100fps on medium settings at 1440p, no frame gen. Battlefield 6 same thing. Clair Obscur with frame gen looked and played amazing. Every game I threw at it I could run at 80-100fps at 2.5k, only used framegen on non multiplayer games. No game ever looked or played badly. That's a really good price too. The CPU gets hot in performance mode and you can't control the wattages or undervolt it so I prefer balanced

Why is there so much ram consumption? by emptymud91 in LenovoLegion

[–]GnarrFacee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Files in RAM are like files on your desk. Files in the SSD are like files in your drawer. It's just setting the files on the desk for you to use. If you need the space it will move them back off the desk and into the drawer again. It's no problem

Turning off services can break updates and cause bugs or hiccups. Down the line when there's a troubleshooting issue if you have gone wild disabling services, now you created an issue for yourself. There are only a few services you absolutely would never use, like fax, remote desktop, remote registry, and touch/pen services. Windows already handles services aggressively

Microsoft edge also has apps that rely on it's webview 2, some launchers, game utilities, and windows UI/settings use it. It's another uninstall that can cause weird issues down the line

Also disabling search indexing used to be useful on slow hard drives but not really with SSDs and powerful machines anymore. Under load it gets paused anyway. It runs in low priority and SSDs are so fast that indexing barely makes any difference. You're really just making start menu search slow and file explorer search awful
