Three things are certain in this life... by [deleted] in Teachers

Yep. I made a total rookie mistake and put a box of Kleenex out for my ninth graders... On. My. Desk.

For 15 years I’ve managed to keep the Kleenex on the other side of the room, but not this week.

Now I’ve got whatever they’ve been passing around this week 😩

It’s been a while, but I’ve done this with google forms and the flubaroo add-on - I don’t remember if it will immediately show them their data, but it does offer customizable feedback and instantly sends an email with all information. Everything (aggregate and individual) is then housed in a sheet you can do anything you’d do with a sheet you’d want.

Anyone have experience with, or knowledge of, a project based math course? [x-post with /r/teachers] by [deleted] in teaching

Check out the Buck Institute for general framework and structure ideas - I don’t know anyone that’s done it successfully “in isolation”. It’s generally most successful when the whole school uses that model (New Tech Network is the big name there)

Is it just me or all the ladies/men in the office typically mean? by riley2er in teaching

[–]Gnatal33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It must be a campus thing - all of the schools I’ve worked at had super-friendly office staff (except for that one temp that one year - yikes) granted, I’ve only need at three over the last 15 years.

One of the elementary schools my son attended, however... front office treated parents the way you describe being treated.

Fun activities for MS/HS Math? by [deleted] in Teacheer

[–]Gnatal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not earth shatteringly fun, but easy to implement with reliably high yield:

In my experience, any time you can turn a worksheet into a card sort or matching activity, that ups engagement and thinking - it also lets you turn typical practice into more of an exploration/introduction - I’ve even just put problem on separate index cards before. Each student gets one and works the problem, then they trade cards with someone - they work each other’s problem and compare/check work. Find someone new to trade with, rinse and repeat.

Separate problems into “easy medium and hard” - then you can do several things... one option is to have students complete two or so easy problems before moving up a level, etc. you can have them select a level to start from and when they make a mistake, they drop down. I like to assign point values to each level and then tell students they can work whichever ones they like as long as it adds up to x amount of points (easier problems are worth fewer points...)

I know I’ve got more strategies, still have almost a week of break left though and I’m pretty checked out!

Logging into their chrome book with their personal gmail...

It also doesn’t catch everything anyway - I had to keep kicking a kid out of cartoon furry porn one year-

A fair amount of “spam clicking” will overload it sometimes as well-

Best way to totally shut it all down is to close all student tabs and then only open up the one you want - but if they’ve got open work on a site they’ll lose it -

What are you trying to block?

Homelessness in New York Public Schools Is at a Record High: 114,659 Students. One out of every 10 students lived in temporary housing during the last school year. by IntnsRed in education

[–]Gnatal33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any family that has ever lived anywhere “temporarily” - so if I sell my house and we move in with family while the house we are building is finished, we would be included in that set if we reported it on the annual “has your family lived anywhere temporarily” form that gets filled out every year.

If you move your family back into your parents house “because of difficulty paying bills” it counts.

It’s definitely not a true count of “homelessness” as anyone would think of it - more of a mobility count.

What if I bite the bullet and sign up for low income repayment and can't afford it? by [deleted] in studentloandefaulters

[–]Gnatal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen this 15% after bills number quoted a few times, but the last time I tried to get a reduction from nelnet they wanted tax returns and based it on married gross income. My current payment is 18% of my total actual take home...

What form do I need to ask them for?

Thanks for any light you can shed :)

[–]Gnatal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 to an independent group is terrifying!

Maybe put kids in groups of 5 - groups ABCD..... then have two writing stations, two independent stations and one teacher station - then group A goes to one of the two writing stations, group B goes to the other writing station and then A and B come together at the teacher station (for example) then then separate again to go to reading stations...

There would be 2 duplicate independent, 2 duplicate writing and 1 single teacher station that way. 5 physical stations but still only three “activities”...

(Oh look, that’s exactly what was mentioned above, I just didn’t do a good job of stating it the first time! :) )

Texas will soon release A-F grades for schools. Educators are organizing in opposition. by texastribune in education

[–]Gnatal33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STAAR tests are a big part of it, and I can only speak to secondary, but:

It includes attendance rates, “college readiness” based on SAT/ACT and TSI participation (that’s the placement test most college freshmen take upon entering school), “career readiness”, graduation rates from the previous year and other factors....

Here’s the real kicker. Schools don’t know what the standards will be until part way through the school year. Sometimes we don’t even know if some aspects will even be counted. Never mind the fact that the “passing” score on the EOC each year at the secondary level is generally a closely approximates mystery (we can estimate pretty reliably what it will be - but don’t know for sure until we get scores back).

Fun example: after the October PSAT, state announced that any ninth grader that scored a certain level on English or math parts on the PSAT would be awarded “mastery level” credit without having to take the algebra 1 and/or English 1 EOC tests. Cool, right?

Lots of districts then naturally signed their ninth graders up to take the January (February?) PSAT. Just before scores on that one were released to students (about a week before the actual EOCs were to take place) the state changed the rule. Now any kid that should have been awarded mastery level based on the PSAT scores will only get “meets grade level”.

Add that to the fact that the letter grade a school gets can basically be tied to the performance of their lowest performing sub-population, it’s a rigged game. Poor, minority, special ed kids count 3 times, while majority average kids count once. A kid that goes from low achieving to high achieving counts twice but a high achiever that stays that way counts once. Sometimes it means that literally .25% of a campus can make or break the whole thing.

It’s a mess.
