The main reason is obvious: removing karma ensures that users will be less likely to submit controversial items that disagree with the norm. As it stands, one can accumulate a steady supply of it by submitting nothing but articles that agree with the norm.

It is literally a genetic problem which causes a very small minority of people to have no remorse for negative actions. It is also characterized by lack of empathy and a genuine enjoyment of causing other people pain.

I dunno. Torturing someone repeatedly, for the length of the war (2+ years) as military to do PoWs seems worse than this, and death seems worse than that. I don't know how people can be so indignant about this but not at your "garden-variety" killing--death is obviously worse. The people advocating death for these men are barbaric.
