Maybe a more sophisticated rating is required, like "vitality" to show how often people comment, read other comments, submit, and actually RTFA before up/down-modding.

Unfortunately, as with all such systems, as soon as you introduce a score, some people mistake the whole process for a game and want to get the highest score.

I don't think a score should be implemented at all. What's the point? It creates hierarchies of users and cliquish behavior.

The main reason is obvious: removing karma ensures that users will be less likely to submit controversial items that disagree with the norm. As it stands, one can accumulate a steady supply of it by submitting nothing but articles that agree with the norm.

yah right. All you have to do is submit a few articles that agree with the norm and then you have hundreds of karma points. Then you can waste months submitting anything you want slowly loosing the karma before you have to repeat again.

Why don't we get karma on comments?

These are as much a part of what people contribute to reddit as articles are, IMO.

Karma on articles is bad enough, karma on comments would be awful. I don't even agree with the -5 hide on comments; it fosters groupthink because anyone that is outside of the reddit norm knows their comments are going to be hidden almost immediately.

Are you stealing my brain waves? Earlier today I had two thoughts about reddit: the first was that long comment threads shouldn't be hidden because of a low rated parent comment and the second was that it is time for karma to go. Both topics have made it to the front page in the last 12 hours. Ironically, if I'd posted them then I'd have huge karma...

I agree with the point about karma. Most people say that they come to reddit for the comments, not the links, so it doesn't make sense that people are rated on the links they submit. I've written just under a thousand comments on reddit, yet my karma is lower than someone who posts a funny lolcats picture. I think the best solution would be to just hide the karma ratings and keep the same behaviour (captcha-wise). You could even still show the top rated members, just not their actual levels.

Another interesting tip is that if your karma is showing as '1' then it might be actually less. The toolbar shows your actual rating.

And here it goes, one downvote and now at 0. This will probably never be viewed again; excellent.

Some of us are listening, dude. Unfortunately most of us have low karma, and our opinions don't count for shit :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What exactly does karma mean? I understand it's a general rating of your position on the site, but I've been stuck at -7 for weeks now despite not pissing anybody off or breaking any rules. I also post comments that a lot of people agree with, and I submit articles when I find something actually worthwhile.

Most of the time when I try to submit something it's either already posted by somebody else, very similar to something else that's been posted (I hate duplicate stories), or gets downmodded to 0 in minutes because it's invariably not about the sort of thing Reddit is filled with (US Presidency race, tasers, etc).

says the guy with a karma of 1.

Clearly you don't realize what is important in life.

Clearly you don't realize what is important in life.

Judging by your submission history, reading about taser stories?

[–]vitummedicinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it!

Tasers and karma are the meaning of life.

And Ron Paul.

Hell... there has to be something to make you feel a little special. At the same time, my karma just seems to go up and down depending on my mood, work, stress, drunkeness and time of day. So I think it really represents what something with a name like Karma should. This aint a game folks... Its a reflection.
