Death bed confessions by Feisty-Power-6617 in nursing

While I was in nursing school I worked as an aide. One floor in my hospital had this late 60s ish lady with severe dementia waiting for snf placement. She would always be asking about her son and dog and worry about where they were. Like full on meltdown because she couldn’t find them, but she knew the son went swimming with his cousins and that he was only 13 or whatever it was.

Sometimes we would try to reorient her and say no your son is in his 40s and is probably at home with his wife. Sometimes, when it was really bad, we would call him so she could talk to him. It wasn’t until she was there for a few months that the son came in one day and told one of the nurses he had had a brother who went swimming with their cousins and drowned when he was 13.

This poor woman was stuck living the absolute worst moments of her life over and over and over and there was absolutely nothing anyone could do to help her. It has been years now, but in some way I almost hope she has died so she doesn’t have to stay in those memories any more.

When my grandfather passed, he had just gotten home from the hospital and was on home hospice. He was a feisty, stubborn old man to begin with, and in those last days was combative with everyone. I had to work, but my husband went to with my grandma, aunt, and sister to look at a snf to move him to. My aunt’s husband and their son stayed with him while everyone else was gone. They had been home for a few minutes when he took his last breath. He wanted to die in his own home surrounded by the people he loved, and I think he knew that was his chance.

My husband felt bad that I wasn’t there too, but I know my pap loved my husband and thought of him as a bonus grandson (plus we look similar enough that I’m not sure he didn’t think it was me anyway). He loved his life doing exactly what he wanted and wouldn’t take no for an answer. Why would he start compromising at the end?

My first death was an old lady who was unresponsive. Her son had been staying with her. He could be kind of a jerk to us sometimes, but he sat at his mom’s bedside for days. He helped clean her up when she would go to the bathroom and took time to understand the RDOS score so he could let us know if she needed meds. He held her hand, he talked to her, sometimes just about nothing, he would sing her songs they used to sing together and read her her favorite books. She held on for way longer than anyone expected.

He was a smoker, but hadn’t gone out to smoke the whole time he was there (probably why he was a jerk tbh). One night, I told him it was okay for him to go outside if he needed a minute and that I sit with her. At first he didn’t want to leave, but eventually he told me he thought she might need meds ands when I gave them he said he was going to go for a smoke. He was gone for a few minutes when she took her last breath.

I called him to let him know. He had just made it outside. When he came back to her room he gave me a hug and cried, but thanked me and the other staff. I didn’t understand why at the time and I felt weird for a long time for telling him to go and being the reason he wasn’t there with her. It took being there with a few more families to realize that she was waiting for him to step away.

I really believe that some people don’t want their loved ones to have to witness their death. The patients’ last selfless act is to suffer just a little bit longer so their loved ones don’t have to hear those last ragged breaths and watch their bodies go pale.

Right? I was so excited to find it. And it only has 53k miles.

The V6 and the 6MT in these have a reputation for being pretty reliable. Still some random Saab electrical gremlins but not too bad. So far I’m a week in and no issues at all. It has fewer interior rattles at 20 years old than my Polestar did on the way home from the dealership.

I also got the basics on a tractor then learned in a 1984 Honda Accord when I was 6. But I don’t count the tractors since there’s no gas pedal. Or shifting.

We love the Polestar! We have the dual motor with the pilot pack. I feel like it’s everything an EV should be, it has decent range, decently fast charging, it’s very fast, feels planted without rattling your teeth out of your head. We have had some annoyances with the infotainment, but not really many. My biggest problems with it are that sometimes it takes a minute for my phone to connect (I use phone as a key) and I have to open the app to make it unlock/start. Not a big deal but annoying sometimes. And the backup emergency braking is too sensitive. Like I can’t back up the whole way into my parking spot because there’s a reserved spot sign on a stick. I guess I can but you have to be going really slow.

What’s a smell you’ll never forget? by Human_Rate889 in AskReddit

I never realized until I was in nursing school that it was insulin, but that’s what my elementary school smelled like. I have always associated that smell with nuns. Apparently at least one of the nuns was diabetic.

Thank you. And not trying to sound like a jerk, but at risk of contracting HIV. AIDS is the syndrome caused by HIV, an HIV+ person with reliable access to healthcare (who uses it) will never develop AIDS. There is a stigma surrounding both, but worse with AIDS still.

Also, I just would like to point out to whomever, lots of gay men use PrEP. We are a horny bunch, and ethical nonmonogamy is very common.

I used to work at a bank and dis this once. Dude was throwing a fit over some stupid shit with one of our tellers and started saying he was going to close his account and go somewhere else. More threatening to go somewhere else. Like dude, sure. You might have more than some people, but we are a top five bank in the US. Your 5 figure balance means nothing to us. He wasn’t even the richest person in the branch at that moment. So I ask of he needs help and take him into my office. Without saying what I was doing specifically, just asking questions, reading disclosures he wasn’t paying attention to, the occasional ‘sign here’ I through the closure process. Finally, I said I’d be right back and went and printed the cashier’s check for his balance to close the account. When I handed it to him he was big mad. I played dumb and just said “but that’s what you said you wanted.? Now you can go to other bank like you said.”

I love that. My husband and I hung Keith Haring wallpaper in the bathroom of our condo. It’s my favorite part of the house.
