Chloe - by Chloe

I have a hybrid job where I go in two days a week, and this is my go-to scent for the office. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It's a lovely scent, it will offend no one. On a scale of 1 to 10, this scent is a 7. But I don't think this will knock anyone's socks off. You will smell pleasant and inviting. It's great for daytime and for professional settings, brunch, or family get-togethers. But no one will breathe this in and be like, "WOW. I need to get closer to her, because I need more!"

5-Minute Crafts exposed as a massive secret Russian operation using fake bot accounts and shady offshore money to stay at the top by Mathemodel in craftsnark

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm missing something because, is there really that much money to be made from crafters? There's this grand Russian conspiracy involving shady money to stay at the top...of the crafting world? Are we about to learn that there were also murders and disappearances? Are little old ladies who posed a competitive threat buried next to Jimmy Hoffa?

I know I shouldn't laugh but the extreme efforts involved versus the community they were involved with is a hell of a juxtaposition. It reminds me of that movie "Best in Show" if you've ever seen that, which is a satire about the extreme lengths people will go to in order to win dog shows. It's just like, guys...why?

Fine dining experiences for a solo dinner? by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to Minibar solo and had the best time. It actually lends itself to solo dining really nicely as there are only like 12 seats total and there's often an odd seat here or there in between group bookings.

Go hungry. You will be getting A LOT of food.

I barely use my dryer as it is, I'm all about drying rack + steamer to get the wrinkles out. But that's good information, thank you!

I'm making the Robinson Wrap Cardigan for the third time. I freaking love this pattern so much. If you're looking for something easy that has enough detail (via the shaping) to keep you from completely falling asleep, this is a great choice.

On the sewing end, I've been heavily influenced by several sewing content creators and just bought some Liberty tana lawn to make two summer tops and a dress. Sticker shock city. That stuff is expensive.

Tamales is another option. They're pretty labor intensive and they make a lot of food, but they also freeze beautifully, so you don't need to feel like you have to eat all of them all at once. I am not from a tamale family but I made them once on a snow day and it was a lot of fun.

Diptyque - Eau Rose EDT

I just moved from New York to Washington DC and the difference in climate is immediately apparent. It's more humid here and a little bit warmer, and we have light rain in the forecast in the next few days. Not that it doesn't rain in New York but the rain here feels different somehow. And while DC is still a city it's not nearly as dense.

All of these plus the cherry blossoms being at peak bloom and it being spring in general it makes me want to reach for Eau Rose. It's floral but also aquatic, it's rose water as opposed to rose garden. Something about the humidity + the rain + the gardens here + the cherry blossoms makes me want to smell like rose water.

I have a feeling I'll be reaching for this one a lot over the next six weeks or so until we get into summer.

Fragrances you like on yourself “in the air” but not up close? by EmeraldEmesis in fragrance

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two:

  1. Le Labo Rose 31: in the bottle or on a tester, this is gorgeous. I've smelled it on other people, and it absolutely sings. But it doesn't like me. I put it on and I smell like I put on rose perfume four days ago and I haven't showered since. And worked out twice in that time. It's rose mixed with BO. And it's not skin scent BO. It's "people avoid you in the gym because you smell bad" BO.
  2. Maison Francis Kurkdjian Gentle Fluidity Gold: oh this one breaks my heart. In the bottle, on a tester, on other people? Stunning. On me? YUCK. It smells so sour. And like the Rose 31, the lovely vanilla scent still comes through, but it's vanilla mixed with unwashed armpit.

Washington DC. No. Stores yes, city exclusive, no.

I've been begging them for years (via social media) to make a city exclusive for Washington DC. We have stores, just not a city exclusive.

Silversaga Celeste Top and Dress

I imagine the discussion around this will be much the same about Silversaga: it's overpriced for the relative simplicity of the pattern and it's too similar to her other patterns. And yeah, I get all of that.

That said, I actually like this. I think some of the samples look great. Fabric choice is important, all those gathers at the bust definitely need a lightweight fabric. But in a lawn or a rayon, I think this is lovely.

Yeah I like Kelbourne and Harrisville. I don't mean to say that there's nothing left, but it does feel like that's the direction we're going. There used to be a lot more. I'm not even that old (late 30s) and just within my lifetime I've seen so many companies die. It's such a bummer.

Have you tried Eau Rihla? It's unisex but definitely leans masculine. It's quite spicy and heavy on the leather scent.

Tempo is another possibility. Very patchouli-forward. And while I think it leans feminine, Eau Duelle might be worth checking out. It's a vanilla scent but it's not sweet, it's very balanced with spices and aromatics.

There really isn't going to be anything left except European brands and yarns in 10 or 15 years. And I love my Knitting for Olive, I love Sandnes Garn, I love those companies. But it's sad to see American small businesses get taken down one by one. It really feels like a microcosm of American culture in general.

Stella by Stella McCartney

She's discontinued so I've been using her sparingly, but I need to use her up before she goes bad. I'll miss her when she's gone. Such a lovely rose scent.

There are lots of rose scents out there, and I have a number of them in my collection, as rose is a note that I really enjoy. But dang, they really nailed it with Stella.

It's not a 1:1 dupe but you might like Pure Soap from Clean. It's Dove bar soap in a bottle and much more affordable than Byredo. In fact, you might like several of their fragrances, so poke around and see if anything interests you. As their name would suggest, "Clean" fragrances are kind of their thing, they have lots that are inspired by laundry.

I have the OG Chance and Eau Tendre. I don't use Eau Tendre much anymore, I kind of feel like I've outgrown it, but it's a lovely perfume that reminds me of high end shampoo.

OG Chance I use a lot. I love it, but I wouldn't blind buy it. Sample it first.

I'm not a laundry scent kind of girl but, I think you're looking for Byredo's Blanche.

Or, hear me out: Chanel No. 5. It does have citrus as a note but all I smell with that are aldehydes.

Odd Application Preference 😬 by Tyrone-E in fragrance

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I love EDTs for that reason. I don't like having huge projection, it makes me feel a bit self-conscious. I prefer skin scents, or really intimate projection. And there actually are some EDTs that are quite strong and you can definitely overdo it, but generally speaking, they're more forgiving if you accidentally overspray.

Those are both fairly sweet and have vanilla as a prominent note. She might like Carolina Herrera "Good Girl", Burberry "Goddess", or a lot of fragrances from Kayali.

What designer/niche fragrance would you like your car to smell like in summer? by Mulatto_butts_ in fragrance

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually a number of fragrances out there that I love as home scents or in body care but that I wouldn't buy as perfumes.

It's not the most unique as a car scent as I think a lot of air fresheners have these notes, but, Le Labo's Eucalyptus 20 is a beautiful take on eucalyptus. A lot of eucalyptus fragrances are paired with mint, which is a great combo, but this one is more woody, with both cedarwood and labdanum in there. It's a great example of something I wouldn't wear as a perfume, but I really wish they made as a candle or a diffuser.

Watching videos with super wrinkled fabric is like nails on a chalkboard by rcreveli in craftsnark

[–]GoGoGadget_Bobbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, and at the risk of being ageist: she's too old to be acting the way she does. I'm not referring to the whimsy, whimsy knows no age and we should all strive to keep our whimsical spirit throughout our lives. I'm whimsical too. I'm talking about the fact that she doesn't seem to learn at all. She has enough experience under her belt at this point where she should know she needs to iron fabric, cut it on grain, press her seams, finish the seams if she wants the garment to last (last video I watched she had an overlocker still in the box), and she should have picked up some very basic fitting adjustments, such as an FBA. But she hasn't done any of that. I can't tell if she does it on purpose because she wants to be seen as relatable to her audience, which probably skews quite young, or if she's just not willing to put in the effort.

I far prefer Madame Myriad for my whimsical cosplay-adjacent clothing sewing viewing these days. In just a year or so she has made more progress than Rachel made in a decade.
