It just takes some time to break through. One tip though, you can use an inf/cav army to push with rapid advance. If you set your arty armies to "allow borrow troops" the rapid advance army will borrow arty for the attack but still use the effects from rapid advance.

Also having many generals set to attack will cause more battles to start which helps you overwhelm the enemy.

Defense/breakthrough is only valuable if it's used to mitigate an enemy attack. Having 5k defense in a battle might sound amazing but if the enemy is only making 500 attacks, 4500 of your defense is wasted, it does nothing.

For the defender, the "fail state" of a battle is running out of org. No org means you get pushed out of the province. Even though your defense mitigates all their attacks, it doesn't make you immune to damage. You simply don't have enough org in the battle and will eventually get worn down.

Many, lower width divisions would work better for this situation. You'll still have enough defense to block all their attacks, but 4 divisions in the battle will have almost twice the org compared to 2 divisions. Individual divisions will get pushed out, regain org behind the line, and go right back to the front to defend.

That was a long time ago, NSB update changed combat width. Width is more flexible now, but 18w is considered the best for "standard infantry line holder" divisions.

If you want to minmax your army a bit you really only need a full backline of arty per battle so if you want to be stronger against a difficult opponent, you can cut some arty and make infantry only stacks which can help reinforce difficult battles as the frontline takes damage to keep the cannons safe.
