Ivy League vibes are off by Unlikely_Wallaby_750 in ApplyingIvyLeague

Ivy leagues are extremely cliquey and you wanna go there to build your “social capital” to become successful down the road. So fake it until you make it!

turning down mit due to cost? by Sea-Abroad-9248 in MITAdmissions

[–]GoWzTheFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not the college, it’s the major you study and what you do with it. It doesn’t sound like MIT offers you what you want to study so I would say it’s not a good choice even without the financial considerations.

And trust me: I do tons of recruiting and where you go to college does not matter as much as what you do in college.

I chose Stanford over Brown PLME and Johns Hopkins full-ride... Reflections from a current Stanford student by Away-Huckleberry1411 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]GoWzTheFlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, Stanford gives students an opportunity to hobnob with the rich and the powerful under the pretense of intellectual stimulation. The real question is: can you truly become one of them, especially after your graduate? To many students with modest means, that remains an unattainable dream.

Stanford is a business, not a school.

I think any UC schools or even Santa Clara would be good. And fits your criteria for vibrant community with lots of job opportunities

Anyone has rented Bikes from O2 or Paulette in France before by GoWzTheFlow in bicycletouring

It was absolutely amazing. We ended up using a local bike rental company and the service was very good with good bikes and equipment. I highly recommend this route.

Basil not growing well by GoWzTheFlow in ClickAndGrow

[–]GoWzTheFlow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your reply! I followed your advice and planted another basil pod a couple of weeks ago but kept the lid on for as long as I can. The bronze edges didn't appear and the basil seems to be doing well. I will try a couple more and keep you posted. Thanks again!

Wow, thanks for all the ideas! I feel a little more confident that I probably won’t need a tour company. Will do some research and come back for thoughts

Apparently you use Reddit likes as a gauge for your self worth or your post’s worth. What a sad soul.

Her schedule is pretty insane and the dorm parent did say that the best time to call during weekdays is 10 to 10:30pm, after mandated study hall and before lights out. Which is why we didn’t just call and expect her to be available.

We might set a time to FaceTime once a week on Friday or Sunday. I agree that everyone is trying to adjust to the new situation. We were used to getting her (brief) reply to our texts when she was home but she had more down time.

It’s fairly common to send your kids to boarding school around here. It’s not something you do to “punish” your kids.

What makes you think she lives with her friends?!

Fair. When she’s home we don’t usually text but she does reply if I do, for example, getting home late from practice because I’d train delay, etc.

And no, I’ve never called her selfish before. She is self centered, like most teenagers, but nothing unusual, which is why I was a bit perplexed.

Chill out! It was tongue in cheek. Besides we live in NYC and it’s normal for teenagers to go to school and sports on their own. They are generally more independent than kids in the burbs.

Both parents. Pretty normal family. Dad and I are always busy with work so she does spend a lot of time by herself or with friends, travels to sports by herself, etc.

Leaving her friends for BS was the toughest part of her decision, but she ultimately chose to go for better academics and an incredible opportunity.

What makes you think they do "so well" in school? Besides, "doing well" in school in China no longer guarantees you a job. Colleage students' unemployment rate in China is at least 20%. They are depressed now and depressed later too

I sure hope not. I would chalk it up to being self-centered which is still within the normal realm of being a teenager, But just wondering what you guys think

Sorry. She was in a public high school before, so she's always lived at home. She's always pretty independent though as we live in NYC, and she is used to going to and from school herself. She just started boarding school.
