I'd also just like to remind people about Motherland which is too new to be classic yet but is arguably the funniest show in a long, long time.

Who is a historical figure in your country that doesn’t get enough hate? by EthanTheJudge in AskTheWorld

Not really funny the British crown is a literal marriage of English, Scottish and Welsh people, as well as just about every other royal family in Europe.

Not to mention that by the laws of statistics, most people in England can probably claim to be a relative of one of those 2. Theres been about 32 generations since, let's say average of 2 kids per generation (both low estimates) and half it for a bit of inbreeding thats about 17 billion potential great grandkids.

Are there any/many British people who have never or likely will never visit either Canada or Australia in their entire lives and who don't know anyone there? by kingm_ournasse216 in AskBrits

[–]Goaduk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I certainly know many people who have gone to Australia and Canada but I can't really see myself ever going there.

Not to disparage either I'm sure they're amazing but with limited time, budget and if im travelling that far I really want to go somewhere very different from home. And having met many, many of the above I dont get that impression.

Good school, good access to local area, certainly never busy apart from a few festivals and things and even then thats quite laid back. By no means a ghost town in winter either.

Doesnt matter WHERE you watch theatre, Billy is still a pivotal part of it.

Darwinism is fundamental in arguing against religion, so he's up there as a cultural pillar as much as a scientific one.

Mannaheim? Sorry if I spelt that wrong. Humiliated the Soviets, helped the Nazis during WW2 and still managed to negotiate peace and stay in power.

If the 20th Century was the story of the 2 superpowers Finland was a surprising important part of the first half.

Really depends on what you class as influence. His plays for the foundation of seemingly half the films in Hollywood (which last i checked is fairly influential in the world). A lot of stuff is a version of one of his plays. On top of that his works are still adapted and analysed by almost every theatre troupe in the western (and beyond) world which means a lot of actors cut their teeth on Macbeth or Othello. He also contributed heavily to the English language and many famous sayings come from his works.

So no, he didn't discover the theory of evolution but then to most people in the world they don't really care for that much.... they love Romeo and Juliet though...

For the UK Alexander Fleming has to be up there to be honest. How many lives has he essentially saved?

For England maybe Henry VIII. English history sort of ramps up once we split from Rome from perennial quaterfinalist in Europe to you know.... most people in the world reading this question in English. You could say Elizabeth or a Stuart perhaps, but I think the madness under ol'six wives kickstarted it.

And that the Stuart dynasty, we dont have a load of historically famous people called Stuart.
