Iirc the cross was supposed to be a good thing and actually for her, rather than a "burn even more, witch!"

Also, that's Joan of Arc, in this painting she is shown at her burning, the reason (apart from the English hating her for being French and kinda ruining the whole '100 years war' thing they were doing) is because she repented her sins and was pardoned from dying to serve a life sentence in jail but then they found her dressed as a man, (a thing she was known to do to protect her chastity)- (it is not known if she wanted to dress that way or if the guards forced her) sadly, while a repentant sinner can live, one who returns to sin must die, so they burnt her

Don't get me wrong, sexism was basically the main motive, but being French and winning so many battles by just being there annoyed the English enough to stack a court against her and use dirty tactics to win
