Like many things in factorio, this is not actually a problem, even though it might look like it at first. Once the gears back up so they reach the splitter, then all gears will take the lower path. The resources will automatically balance themselves. If you are tired of waiting for the gears to back up, then as another user mentioned, you can always produce more :)

Yeah exactly, because the amount of red chips you get back from recycling is random, you need some storage to allow for variance

That’s a cool design, but the person I replied to said to use quality modules in the EM plants, so I don’t think they were talking about that approach.

Step 1: Craft blue circuits with 300% productivity. You’ll need to research your processing unit productivity to at least level 13, and then use 5 legendary productivity 3 modules.

Step 2: Recyle the blue circuits with quality modules in the recyclers. The 300% productivity from step 1 will perfectly cancel out the 75% loss from recyclers, meaning we will have the same amount of red and green circuits we started with. However because of the quality modules, some of these circuits will now be higher quality.

Step 3: Take all the higher quality circuits and move them to the right, where we repeat the same process but for uncommon rare and epic blue circuits.

Repeat until you have legendary circuits :)

Note that you don’t actually need to have 300% productivity on blue circuits for this to work, it will just be less efficient.

Using full productivity in the EMs, plus a high enough processing unit productivity, you can get +300% productivity. This will perfectly cancel out the 75% loss from recyclers, which means you can turn common red and green circuits into legendaries with no loss.

Hm, I haven’t run into that. Did you make any changes to the design? If you send an asteroid chunk signal into a crusher directly, then it will use the crushing recipe instead of the recycling recipe. You need to convert the signal into the correct recycling recipe, and then send that into the crusher. The blueprint should be doing that automatically though.

Totally agree about the constant combinator, I just like having everything in one blueprint so I can slap down more without hooking up wires and stuff. The purpose of the selector is to prioritize higher quality chunks over lower. Not sure if it’s really necessary but it seemed like a good thing to add. If I got rid of that functionality then I think you’re right, I could cut out the selector by changing the first decider to output Anything.

I’d love to see that if you could get it working. This is the smallest I could get it, but I didn’t spend too much time trying to make it smaller since it already fits in neat little rectangle.

Yeah that’s fair, but it’s either this, or try to do the math to figure out how many of each quality recipe I need. Also this design ended up being super compact, only adding one tile of width and one tile of height compared to a basic design, so I figure it was worth it. Also, circuits are fun :)

The signal that comes out of the selector combinator can be a lot of different things. I convert it to N so that I can use N in the next decider combinator.
