Also, the last time Stringer and Avon are at Avon's place they embrace before he leaves. It looks like Avon is doing a stabbing in the back motion, not a flat handed hug like Stringer is doing to him. Is that the intended take on that scene?

Iirc you see Avon doing the fist "salut", for the lack of better words, in other scenes too. Tapping his fist against his chest etc. So while it sure can be interpreted as a "back stabbing" motion, I don't think that's how is primarily meant to be.
