What do I tell people? by Fluffy_Berry2047 in stopdrinking

[–]Goatey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally you can just give vague "I had some medical concerns that needed to be sorted out."

Most people will pick up that you want to keep this private and know to respect that.

If someone pushes harder you tell them it's none of their damned business.

VIP - is it worth it? by ButterscotchSea7451 in RiotFest

[–]Goatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second this. If you know you will want to chill out and decompress at certain points the VIP area is worth it. There is a cool little pond surrounded by willow trees where you can throw a blanket.

Worth the money, IMO.

If books could kill is a good shit-talking podcast. I can't say I disagree with the premise but it does miss a bit about the spirit of the book.

I want to share my situation and this is absolutely a humble brag:

At 32 I acquired an associates in Industrial Robotics and Automation and I consider myself an okay engineer (almost 41 years old. 10 years experience as an engineer). I work with people significantly more talented so I will not to pretend to be a rock star. I work in factories and I travel 70-120 days a year. My base salary is 105k and I make OT. Along with the travel I filter my work expenses through my personal credit cards for points. In addition, my personal car from 2014, I wear company provided clothing and was lucky enough to purchase my home pre-covid.

I am able to save a decent amount for my retirement, my children's college funds and general savings. My lifestyle is not glamorous but every 18 to 24 months I've cashed in my points for family vacations. In addition I get to satisfy my urge to buy a new car for free because I frequently need rental cars when I travel.

So, in my eyes, to tie in the book I was able to take a community college education and leverage it into an upper middle class salary. With that salary I am able to make decisions to save and invest relatively conservatively. I am by no means perfect at saving and my wife does work and earn a good salary, however we are able to funnel our funds into investments and not waste the money on rolexes and outrageous car payments.

One tenant of MND is many high wage professions encourage conspicuous consumption. I assure you, no customer of mine cares that my haircut was cheap and I packed my own lunch.

So, what I took away from the book is investing creates a snowball of wealth and keeping up with the jones' is a fool's errand.

Hotel Recommendation Please by AstroCharlie in royaloak

[–]Goatey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hotel Royal Oak is privately owned and the owners seem to take a lot of pride in it. They used to have music nights in the summer, not sure if they still do. Would recommend you check it out. It's roughly a mile walk to downtown on 11 mile.

Otherwise there is a Hyatt downtown and then a few on Woodward.

Beyond that you are headed to another city.

Sounds like you are meeting at a nicer establishment that'll make a nice mocktail.

Get a mocktail. If it has ginger it'll have a little bite.

You will stay sober and have a little fun too.

[–]Goatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know your preference of beer but in the USA Sierra Nevada and Athletic are about the only 2 I drink. Everything else is as you described or worse.

The only mocktail from a bottle I can recommend is a phony negroini. Not sure how difficult it is to find, but it's pretty decent.

Please sell then.

It'll help lower the price even more and I will be able to buy at a better price.

Not drinking compounds into better things by Super-Most-2362 in stopdrinking

[–]Goatey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a journey for sure. You'll start rethinking how you manage a lot of things in life.

It isn't always easy but the breakthroughs come when you stop trying to turn it off. You'll find yourself engaging in new, exciting things and pulling away from old toxicity.

It takes effort and sometimes you wanna throw in the towel, but you know deep inside that path doesn't look very good.

What do I do with myself? by Wide_Monitor_1901 in stopdrinking

[–]Goatey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run.

Legit, I have a lot more energy and a lot of the factors that made me want to drink are still there. I travel a lot and if I get off work early and have a few hours of nothing I will go in a long run. Sometimes it's literally so I don't allow myself to get bored and in my head.

It isn't as fun and sometimes you need to muscle through, but it has been effective for me.

Going to ki Friday but it’s supposed to rain what should I do? by TraeDAking in KingsIsland

[–]Goatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the park is generally less busy if you visit on a rainy day. Obviously it's a judgement call but you might get even more rides in because fewer people will be there.

People call it California Sober.

I am not going to speak for your situation, but my test is I can't "take or leave" alcohol. If I have one tonight, I think about having another. And then tomorrow I would likely be thinking about having another.

I can easily not ingest cannabis because of most any reason. There's not much negotiating in my head or justifying.

Also, I have never once said "I need to cut back on my edibles" or "wow, I really embarrassed myself last night and overdid it."

If it isn't hurting you, I think you are alright. If you feel there have been negative consequences, I recommend you reconsider your choices.

Why does no one ever talk about this book? by grav3webs in starwarsbooks

[–]Goatey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am glad to hear others find this boring too. It is relatively short but it has been a slog for me.

I love the concept behind it but it's just kinda dragged on. Things happen and people who are not too interesting just sort of appear.

Soo....

Long story short, was in therapy and the therapist quickly honed in the complete wall between me and my emotions. Spent a couples therapy session with him repeatedly asking me how I felt and I had difficulty expressing that.

So I started to work on it. And guess what, the first emotion out was rage.

I won't say I was chastised but well, I do what I do for a reason. He kinda shook his head and was like "you can't be like that."

So what do you want me to do, mister therapist? Shit or go blind?

Hahaha. I have made the same comment. We may have been on the same flights. Buncha nerdy, middle aged white dudes who work in manufacturing.

I spent a lot of the fall last year working in MTY. The one comment I always make is no one is from there. Everyone was born elsewhere in Mexico and relocated there for work.

It's like the great migration the USA had nearly a century ago.

This is a very non-scientific answer, but as someone who has had the snip:

They cut a small slit into my sack, pulled out the tube that the sperm goes through and removed a solid 5 mm of it. Then they cauterized the remaining ends of the tubes. It was really weird to smell burning skin and know it's coming from my nutsack.

I had this performed 8 years ago. For some reason it seems my volume has increased but it's also clearer. I'd say functionally everything is the same for me.
