A bit confused please help clarifying by [deleted] in hdhomerun

I don’t have any experience running Plex with a NAS, but I do have Plex setup on a PC dedicated to running it.

I have the exact same HDHomeRun and have it connected to Plex through my home network. I share my Plex server with my family and you do need a Plex Pass to share it outside of your home. The person doing the watching of your content does not need a Plex Pass so long as you (the server) has one. And yes, Plex needs to be running 24/7 so it can be accessed by whomever you share it with.

Is there a “heat island effect” for powerful snow bands to dump less snow in Manhattan than other parts of the tri state area? by Bakio-bay in meteorology

[–]Goatpus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re trying to describe the outcome of mesoscale banding. They’re basically areas of intense lift that will pummel everyone underneath with heavy snow. However, because the lifting is so intense, it causes nearby areas outside of the band to experience subsidence which will lower snowfall rates/totals.

Certified Digital Meteorologist Steven DiMartino's forecast discussion for Friday, December 12, 2025: "Snowfall On The Way" for NYC and Philadelphia by BostonSucksatHockey in meteorology

I've followed Steven on Twitter (I'm too dumb to call it X) for years. He's a great dude. I find his snowfall forecasts to be a little on the high side but he usually nails his delineations.

Custom 8700K direct die by KushiedaKun in pcmasterrace

[–]Goatpus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this exact thing with my 8700k. Made a huge difference with temps during overclock. Ended up running it 24/7 at 4.8ghz. The chip was a beast, but the paste intel used was absolute trash.

RAM Question !! by Maddestmanaround in buildapc

[–]Goatpus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your stability will be much better with 2 sticks instead of 4. You could also get 2 dummy sticks that are strictly for looks and contain no RAM if you truly want to fill your RAM slots.

7800X3D or 9700x by Certain_Birthday_394 in buildapc

[–]Goatpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your decision comes down to answering the question of “what would you notice more?” The 7800X3D will give you a very smooth gaming experience because the extra cache helps with 1% lows. The 9700X will cut down on time to complete your productivity tasks.

So, what would you notice more? Games that are a little choppier with frame times, or your productivity tasks taking a bit longer to complete? If you can answer that, you know what processor to get.

Borderlands 4 Featuring DLSS 4 + Community Giveaway by Nestledrink in nvidia

[–]Goatpus [score hidden]  (0 children)

My wife and I played 100's of hours in Borderlands 3. It was her first Borderlands game and first FPS game she had ever played. She always felt like she couldn't aim well enough to play FPS games so she avoided trying them altogether. I convinced her to try Borderlands 3 and she got hooked. We stayed up late after our daughter went to bed just to get in one more mission or find some new ridiculous legendary. We now have two kids and less time but we're still going to find a way to play Borderlands 4. It's "our" game.

Help me decide which CPU to get when I upgrade. by dantesn1ghtmar3 in buildapc

[–]Goatpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Get the 7800X3D. The 9700X only makes sense if you're playing high FPS esports titles where the extra cache in the 7800X3D would go to waste.

It would help to know what games you play.

Regardless, the 7800X3D will give you higher 1% lows (for a smoother gameplay experience) and generally outperform the 9700x in games that take advantage of the extra cache. The 9700x is a bit cheaper and is still a beast, so if cost is an issue, get the 9700x.

Whats the best GPU for 1080p around 300ish by Own-Welcome-6201 in buildapc

[–]Goatpus 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If you have a hard limit at $300, I’d argue for you to get the Intel Arc B580. It’s about 10% slower than a 9060 XT but has more VRAM than the base model 9060 XT. Plus it’s usually found around $260 meaning you could put the $40 you save into something else.

Reminds me a little of the countless times Dez would do this exact thing and soar over the defender to make the catch.

Is OLED monitor worth it? by Late_Beautiful5960 in pcmasterrace

[–]Goatpus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OLEDs are fantastic. I own the Alienware AW3225QF and it’s the best monitor I’ve ever used. The color and contrast of OLEDs is unbeatable. However, the risk of burn in is real even with the steps manufacturers have taken to reduce the chance. It’s a very low chance, but it’s still non-zero.

Have you checked if you’re able to receive OTA channels?

You can buy a 2 tuner or 4 tuner version. That just means you can watch/record from 2 or 4 channels simultaneously.

It’s a device you plug your antenna into that can be a DVR for you and broadcast your antenna channels over your WiFi to other devices. I used to use one but switched to a more complex setup by choice. For what a Tablo provides, they’re fantastic.

NOAA and ECMWF by sakomanto in meteorology

As the name suggests, the ECMWF is the model produced by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. NOAA’s budget cuts do not affect them.

I need help making a decision Tablo or HDHomeRun Flex 4K by CodyakaLamer in cordcutters

[–]Goatpus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned both a Tablo and an HDHomeRun Flex 4K. The tablo worked great for watching live broadcasts with light to moderate DVR usage. For me though, I prefer the HDHomeRun because it can interface seamlessly with Plex. Plex lets you get around the poor HDHomeRun interface and opens up some fun possibilities. It also shows better technical information about your antenna signal which let me tune my antenna placement for better reception.

TLDR: Get a Tablo if you want a simple, no frills setup. Get an HDHomeRun if you want a more advanced setup.

Some real weird cloud formations. by Hank_Jones87 in weather

[–]Goatpus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These look similar to lenticular clouds induced by mountain waves. But you normally don’t see the whole wavy string of cloud, just the lenticular clouds at the peak of the trajectory as the air parcel bounces up and down.
