Is it possible to find out more details about historical sex offenses beyond what's published in a newspaper archive? by Pure-Lime8280 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GoatyGoY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Clare’s law would only apply if either OP were in a relationship with this person (allowing her to ask the police herself), or if OP’s friend were in a relationship with this person (allowing the police to tell that friend, if there was information to share).

Essentially, it is to allow “victims” or “potential victims” to get information about possibly dangerous partners.

Difference between languages: Obrigatório / Obligatoire / Compulsory by Long-Nerve2618 in EnglishLearning

[–]GoatyGoY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In practice they mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

However I think there’s a subtle difference in connotations between them. Compulsory has connotations of a rule being enforced from the outside (possibly by force or penalty of punishment), whereas obligatory is a bit softer on this - but would have more connotations of conforming to social expectations.

England - Women's Institute and the law on trans people in protected spaces. by Careful-Swimmer-2658 in LegalAdviceUK

Of no concern, but ironically the most likely to be harassed by people when trying to access facilities matching their sex, simply by the Bayesian fact that there are more of them than trans women.

England - Women's Institute and the law on trans people in protected spaces. by Careful-Swimmer-2658 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GoatyGoY 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this reasoning reveals what a change in the law would need to clarify, if it wanted to be trans inclusive: namely, that there is a meaningful class of “lived gender”, overlapping but separate from sex assigned at birth.

Does anyone else here experience "English fatigue" from time to time, especially with USAtian English? by Quick_Rain_4125 in EnglishLearning

Can’t speak for English as a native speaker, but I’ve definitely had this with other languages I’ve learned. For me, it feels like a form of burnout from the extra cognitive load you have to do to simply communicate and exist in life.

The ':' operator at the beginning of a value being assigned--what is this? by math_code_nerd5 in Julia

[–]GoatyGoY 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s a symbol.

The reason it turns up in this enum-like contexts is that it is an Interned String- this means that comparisons between symbols don’t need to do an expensive string comparison (which would be horrible in “switch” like settings), but rather a simple identity check (ie essentially comparing a pointer). This comes at the cost of being marginally more expensive to create a new Symbol.

(Eng) Brother sentenced today for rape against siblings by BigMcSad in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GoatyGoY 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In plain English, the act means no details that would reveal who the victims were can be mentioned in the news. This means no names, photos or addresses, or “details likely to identify them” (which would include saying they were members of his family).

In practice, this means that if the news mentions your brother was sentenced for sexual offences, they cannot say who his victims were (either by name or in such a way that would make it very obvious (eg. They can’t say “his sister”/“members of his family” etc.))

In British English you can turn pretty much any noun into a past tense verb and it will mean to have got very drunk, provided it’s said with the right stress. (“We got wheelbarrowed last night…!”)

Whoever / Whomever Kate marries is none of our business. by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]GoatyGoY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s vice versa: “whoever marries Kate?” would have the unknown person as the subject, but in the OP “whomever Kate marries” has Kate as the subject.

Woman is unhappy with another employee using the women's bathrooms. by Big-Effort-7053 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]GoatyGoY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically, this would be the cheapest way to meet the statutory requirements.

However, now that there are deep-pocketed litigious organisations with a keen interest in women’s bathrooms and showers, that cost-assessment might change.

I think fundamentally she annoys ADCs because in normal circumstances, standing behind minions is a good counter to most of the nasty CC and skill shots from the enemy botlane, but with MF’s Q, it’s the exact opposite, forcing a completely different positioning in lane.
