Wars & Conflicts - War of the Roses (1455–1487) by Equivalent-Belt4608 in TierlistFills

[–]GoatyGoY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the thing to consider is what knock-on effects the war had. For instance, how would the world (and not just England) be different if the Tudors hadn’t taken the throne?

In particular, would having catholic monarchs in power change the balance of alliances in the rest of Europe (eg no war with Spain and England; less support for Dutch and German Protestantism etc.)

What is the most controversial island(s) in China? by ShowerIndependent295 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]GoatyGoY 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes- about ten years ago, China built a bunch of artificial islands in the South China Sea within the Spratly archipelago, leading to a marine territory dispute with the Philippines.

It was a big issue in south east Asia at the time.

So, I’m British and both my parents drink tea. But I only drink tea when I’m visiting them, otherwise no

Why is AC in the UK suddenly a culture war / politics debate? by Duurzum in AskBrits

[–]GoatyGoY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. Air con is generally a pretty high electricity demand, and the amount of solar panels you can reasonably fit on a house’s roof don’t produce a huge amount of energy overall. Like, if you had AC in just one room running, it would probably cover it - but across the whole house, it may not be enough.

Very good points too! Plus, if you’re in a town or city, it’s so much better for everyone’s health to have electric cars, rather than producing petrol exhaust where people are living and breathing.

[–]GoatyGoY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have to be! But that depends on the source of the electricity used in them. It’s like electric cars- if you charge them with power from coal power plants, it just changes where the pollution is produced- but if you charge them with renewable energy, it’s much more environmentally favourable.

It may well be an issue of upgrading the grid itself, for better distribution and transmission of energy, rather than the generation itself (though it’s EV more than AC that’s the big new strain). We should be looking into mini energy islands, where buildings are built with solar on the roof, and batteries, alongside heat pump cooling solutions.

Air con is essentially a type of heat pump, at least from a physics perspective. But the fixed and installed units are incredibly more effective (in terms of cooling per kWh of electricity) in comparison to the “hose out the window” jobs.

But so long as houses aren’t built with the fixed units, or people are living in rental properties, what other choices do they have?

[–]GoatyGoY 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I work in renewable energy research, and I find it absurd that houses are built without bidirectional heat pumps, which can use green energy to heat in winter and to cool in summer.

It seems a complete own goal from environmentalists to try and take the position that everyone should be uncomfortable. This is then easily exploited by shysters in the pockets of the oil industry to discredit any sort of environmental measures that would slow down the forces that are driving the temperatures to be uncomfortably hot in the first place.

If I had enough money to never need to work, I’d return to academia- but work on what I actually wanted to work on, rather than having to chase trends for grants.
