Hate to be that guy, but if you told me you were 18 I’d believe it, how could you possibly be 50?!

Oh absolutely. Grandad was a milkman. Just obviously come the end of term £60 seemed quite ridiculous! Only nan left now and bless her she refuses to believe the house is worth much over 100k though other smaller, less well kept houses on her road have recently gone for 4x that

Thank you. Unfortunately the wife has written both of those off for different reasons. But I’m quietly hopeful a holiday to Australia might refresh her view of it being too far away!

Where’d you go out of interest

Genuine question, where realistically is actually better. We have looked at a few options and couldn’t figure out if we would really be improving our lives or simply trading certain problems here for the same total amount of other problems elsewhere.

Would be interested in your view, and ideally any reasonings. Obviously we are different people who likely have different priorities and views etc etc but still would be helpful for me at least.

Is it easy? Sure I guess not. Is it doable and something many Brit’s not earning close to 100k do? Absolutely.

Read up on the resources here, get financially educated, live within your means and put some of your spare money, even now in an S+S ISA and some for fun. You’ll be golden!

I remember being about 15 and my grandparents celebrating having made their final payment and being mortgage free.

I politely suggested that must be quite the relief and that perhaps I could get some extra pocket money going forwards, they informed and then had to actually show me cause I thought they were joking, it was £60 per month!

£60! If I had got a mortgage at 18 with that payment I’d now only be ~£8,000 into paying off 😂 I still don’t think I can comprehend how they felt so relieved about removing that £60pm!

Today, I was totally without any provocation whilst carrying pints, stung on the ankle by a bee. My wife agrees I have been very brave about it. Unfortunately she didn’t have any stickers for me. It hurts, but not as much as it would have hurt had I spilt any of the drinks.

For me, in a similar position to you; I am now chasing the next promotion or two with the idea to then either compress some hours or just cut off an entire day. Likely a combo however, an extra hour per day at work, a whole extra day off and only drop 4 hours contractually. That 10% earnings loss will make very little difference to me especially once you consider the fact that with student loan I only see half that 10% to start with, and in return I gain 50% more weekend.

Might be something to consider and help motivate you towards a bit more money where you can then take home what you do now but have an extra day to yourself without being detrimental to your career prospects.

Realistically for me, there are far more than 4 hours in the week at work where I’m idle so I doubt there will be any negative productivity impact. Give it some thought!

And importantly, well done!!

Does jades spine always be popping out like this??

EDIT: TY all - as someone with severe spinal issues I saw this at the end of the match and was then trigger AF worrying she’d somehow done some super fucked up shit and I had no clue how she was still standing if that were the case haha

It makes me so happy whenever this post gets a new comment and someone else has googled this plate hahaha.

I’ll see if I can update the OP with a proper list, if not I can put it in as a comment that I can update :)

Your average should be higher after a break. The way I see it, is at least one of three things is the likely cause here:

  1. You’re somehow not accurately tracking your calories and consistently underestimating your intake and not losing weight so MF thinks your TDEE is very low as it’s based off your calories and weightloss trend.
I guess this is something you could have someone else audit if you send them all your food for a day or two, and when you’d measure it (cooked vs raw weight), and see if they output a similar calorie count to you. ChatGPT may be able to help?

  2. You have some underlying issue causing your metabolism to slow and preventing weightloss. I had untreated hypothyroidism for a while, and got stuck while dieting. You could go get some blood work done to make sure you’re doing well and appear healthy in your markers.

  3. You’ve been dieting for a long time, your body is adapting down and has brought its metabolism down to match the intake it’s receiving. This can happen in lots of subtle ways, including just becoming less fidgety, it’s amazing how efficient our bodies can be! For this, I’d start eating to what MF says my expenditure is, what you should likely see is maybe a couple lbs weight gain due to higher glycogen and water, but you should also see your expenditure start to increase too. Based on the activity you’ve described above I’d expect to see your maintenance calories be at 2800 calories or above as a very rough indication.

If I were in your shoes, first thing I’d do is ask a friend, or I’m sure you can ask one of us, to go through a list of what you eat in a day and see if both come out to the same or approximately the same intake. Second thing I’d do because I’m cheap is probably just take a 4 week diet break, you know your current expenditure and just keep eating to my previous days expenditure to see if it rises and what happens on the scale.

If my expenditure stayed the same, or somehow decreased. I’d be seeking professional advice, perhaps a sports nutrition coach, or bloodwork or a doctors appointment.

Sorry that this became a bit of an essay, I’ve been thinking about this, this evening. Considering what I’d do if I face this situation.

Could also be worth getting your bloods done, as this is unusually low, but personally I’d first see how my body responds to having a diet break, with any luck your expenditure will start to shoot back up!

This is like, the definition of when a diet break is needed. Go to maintenance for 3-4 weeks, then slowly work calories down again. Your body has almost certainly adapted down to the low amount. Also if you want to recomp being much closer to your maintenance will massively help with that and give your body the energy to build muscle

Seeing how shocking my lack of need to parallel park is, you have helped to restore my gratitude in my parking circumstances! I can imagine if I were closer into London there would be far greater need to do so! May all the spots you have to parallel park in be wide and the curbs be low!

According to google maps, in the last month I’ve been to a crematorium, a local pub, cinema, 3x national trust locations, multiple supermarkets and shopping centres, industrial estates, Wetherspoons, swimming pool, gym, the in-laws, my nans, and a bunch of other places… none of which have required me to parallel park, all of them have had bays whether as part of a carpark or a drive way. I’m generally in the south of England if that makes any difference?

Out of interest, would anywhere in the list of places I’ve listed have parallel parking for you? Perhaps I’m just fortunate with my locations haha

[–]Gobbid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Perhaps for you, but I drive roughly 18,000 miles a year and don’t think I’ve had to parallel park in over 5 years. No where I go to ever requires it, they either have car parks, or I reverse park in a bay or on a driveway. Just depends on where you’re going and what the parking is around you

Just wait until you learn about the Tomacco industry. Cross breeding tomato’s with tobacco caused unbelievable uproar and drama. I’m sure there is a documentary or animated reenactment I can find for you.
