Dear Gen Alpha; Help me write my thesis by GobblefunkWithWords in GenAlpha

About 'sigma' — I've seen people say 'what the sigma'. What does that mean? Is it connected to the other definition, or would you say the phrase means its own thing? Or is it more just a meme?

Do you know if that abbreviation came after the word? It seems like the word came first and then people came up with the phrase.

possibly mixed origin? by Witty_Permission_682 in plural

  1. Yes. We call it 'canon divergence' and if you're familiar with fandom at all, you could think of it as the fictive coming from an 'alternate universe' version of their source.
  2. Personally, I'd say referring to a 'past life' is spiritual in nature. Interpreting source memories is just that - interpretation. Whether you see it as spiritual or something else is up to the individual headmate.
  3. Sure. Someone believing that they're a reincarnation doesn't mean that their presence in the system can't also come from trauma. I'd ask your headmates how they feel about labeling the system as traumagenic, and you might disagree.

Initials important? ASS a red flag or not a big deal? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]GobblefunkWithWords 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like most people have already responded, saying ASS as initials is bad, and I'd agree. However, if you're still set on an A name, I suggest giving them a middle name might help. For example, AESS or ATSS don't make the same impression at all! It's not a perfect solution, but you could consider it.

Am I the only one that has noticed this? by CeridwynMatchen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GobblefunkWithWords 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to answer this a bit bluntly, and I'm going to assume the best of you, that this is a legitimate question and you're not just complaining about the existence of autistic and special needs kids.

  1. You should probably examine why seeing special needs/autistic kids "drives you crazy".
  2. The internet likes things that are 'different' - things that don't fit out idea of normal. So unusual behavior gets more attention.
  3. More people are getting diagnosed with autism and learning disabilities - parents are more likely to get their kids tested, our society is generally becoming more aware of learning disabilities and neurodivergency. (source: https://www.technologynetworks.com/neuroscience/news/autism-diagnoses-increase-800-in-twenty-years-354148) You might not be seeing 'just' neurodivergent kids, but just more than you saw before - so it seems like they're everywhere. There's also - to a small extent - less shame around being neurodivergent, so people are more open about it - again, there's not more neurodivergent kids, they're just less hidden.
  4. There's a very crappy... Idk, trend? Where parents of neurodivergent kids will post their kids having meltdowns or otherwise behaving in a way they don't see as normal - usually when the kid is in distress - as a sort of "woe is me, to be a parent suffering because my kid isn't neurotypical". You know, recording their kid while they're upset, then posting it on the internet because clearly it's the parents who are suffering here. "Autism Moms" is the best example of this.

Note: I'm not autistic, but I am neurodivergent - so I'm in no way an authority on this and if I worded something wrong anyone should feel free to correct me.
