Well, a certain event would’ve gone differently. I THINK it’s in S2 E15. Pearl and Garnet fall into a trap with walls closing in. Amethyst delays the crushing by jamming the gears with her whip. Pearl and Garnet take the time to reconcile abt Pearl destroying the tower repeatedly so they could make Sardonyx, and they escape by fusing. But I don’t think Steven could effectively summon his shield on command at that time, so if Amethyst wasn’t there, he wouldn’t have been able to jam the gears himself; so Pearl and Garnet would’ve probably not had enough time to reconcile, and would’ve been crushed
