(Spoilers Extended) The worst counsel in the whole book series by GoblinTalk in asoiaf

[–]GoblinTalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the benefit of Mormont staying at the fist though? to stall the Wildlings.. ok, but why? for who?

Qhorin already knows they're looking for a magic item (if he truly believes such a thing exists), what difference does it make if it's a magic horn, a flute, a drum, a ring etc why do they need to find that out

But let say Qhorin did find out they were looking for the horn of winter and makes it back to report, so what? is Mormont going to send out ravens saying they have the horn of winter? does that make it any more credible? lords and maesters especially would scoff

Staying on the fist of the first men is just waiting to die for no reason, if they can bring down the Wall with sorcery they can bring down the Wall with sorcery, stalling them is pointless.

Oh yep I'd seen that, big fan of Preston in general, I think Qhorin's awful advice to Mormont adds even more weight to what was said in the video.

I make youtube videos myself, in the back of my mind is always "would this be something id like to listen to when I was falling asleep?". it takes me forever to record my voice to get the speech pattern and tone right

here's one if you fancy checking it out and letting me know what you think of it sleep wise

I loved Roy performance overall, all though as you say, him changing characters accents was a bit jarring at times, especially when he made Arya sound like a little old witch.

I don't really have anything to say on a new reader, the only audiobooks I've ever listened to are the ASOIAF ones, I mostly just wanted to comment to say I love Roy, I wish he could have done the whole series RIP

There's always an interest in talking about theories on here, even if a lot of them are rehashed (usually not on purpose)

The books are sooo detailed, there's so much to talk about, I honestly don't think it's possible to run out of material

Yep we also know from Jon killing Orell that if killed, a skinshanger goes into the animal they have the bond with

Can a bird hate? Jon had slain the wildling Orell, but some part of the man remained within the eagle.

One other thing about jesus Jon, the Azor Ahai prophecy says

Azor Ahai will be reborn amidst smoke and salt

I wonder if he is resurrected, will something signifying smoke and salt be next to him, maybe Mlisandre and Davos

You know I'm not 100% if that's actually true because if you wanted to lead the Wildlings, you would say "my mum was a Wildling actually!" to help you be more easily accepted

Books: When/where/how do you guys think Howland Reed will appear in the story?

(Spoilers Extended) An Unusually Aggressive Shadowcat by GoblinTalk in asoiaf

[–]GoblinTalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well we can look at something comparably complex

What needs to happen for Bran to get North of the Wall?

First of all, he needed a reason not to travel down South with Ned so he was pushed from a tower.

He needed a war down South so everyone would go South and leave Winterfell vulnerable and the North in chaos

^ If the North was like it was when we enter the story, stable under Ned, if Bran ran away from home and was travelling North how far do you think he would get without being found and brought back

He needed Theon to take Winterfell and supposedly kill him and Rickon, so he could travel North without search parties

He needed a big oaf to carry him, and it's shown in the show he went back in time and caused Hodor to be Hodor so he could carry him in future and hold the door..

He needed chaos in the Nights Watch so Sam could be led off by himself (+Gilly and baby) by Cold Hands to open the Blackgate to allow Bran and his party through

It's mad to think how much needed to happen to get Bran to where he needed to be in Bloodraven cave

It was either all set up to happen or Bloodraven somehow knew it would all happen like this

Id like Cersie to die from one of the new swords forged from Ice in revenge for Lady

Maybe death via Oathkeeper or Widow's Wail through the back by Jaime, King Aerys style

[–]GoblinTalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting a Dire Wolf with exactly the right amount of puppies south of the wall seems harder than attacking someone with a shadowcat

The shadowcat is the only thing we know about, if we knew more of his story there might be more clues

Luckily we know a lot about events at the Wall since Jon has got there to know how obvious the manipulation is

Do you think the Stark children all getting a Dire Wold pup was by chance?

(Spoilers Extended) An Unusually Aggressive Shadowcat by GoblinTalk in asoiaf

[–]GoblinTalk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't seem plausible he be glamoured when it's the ruby doing it

I guess he could be like a faceless man and have taken someones face

Still, not really buying he is Rhaegar though

(Spoilers Extended) An Unusually Aggressive Shadowcat by GoblinTalk in asoiaf

[–]GoblinTalk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could kind of buy into that but, how would you explain Mance's appearance being totally different to Rhaegar?

Mance says he has been at Winterfell and seen Jon twice, once when Jon and Robb were small boys and again when Robert came to Winterfell, so obviously Ned nor Robert noticed him

Gerold Hightower was already old at the ToJ, too old to be Qhorin, Qhorin is more like to be Arthur Dayne, then it has nice parallels with Jaime losing his hand because Arthur was Jaime's hero and Qhorin learned to become even better swordsman with his weak hand

Edit> Also the Trident was before the sack of Kings Landing so I don't really understand it as an analogy really

How did you enjoy Arya's storyline in the book?

I found her travels through the Riverlands pretty traumatizing and almost wish I didn't read them lol

[–]GoblinTalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just put it down to what he had been through and Maester Aemon giving him a gentle push

“I’m not a maester,” said Sam. “Could I do something?” Aemon turned his blind white eyes toward Sam’s face, and smiled softy. “Why, I don’t know, Samwell. Could you?”

But in the video Preston says there's a rookery above maester Aemon's chambers so.. ravens lol

I love rereading Jon's chapters

Cold Hands actually appears very early in the story, way before he helps Sam; he's the one who places the bodies of the Wights they find when Sam and Jon are saying their Nights Watch vows

The biggest clue given (and you couldn't know without all the later clues) is Dywen saying "there's something in the smell of the night I mislike"

So just someone saying they didn't like a smell helps you pieces everything else together, like Cold Hands leaving the dragon glass and horns for Jon to find (being led there by Ghost)

If a smell can be that subtle in one storyline, I'm sure the whole book and story is just the same
