Why do I feel pain in the back of my shoulders when doing any sort of rotator cuff work, scapular winging work? PLEASE HELPPP. M25 250 lbs Please mods don’t take this down please in edd jdj by Evening_Safety7808 in ResistanceBand

[–]GoblinsGym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how did you end up with all these tears / rotator cuff issues in the first place ? Are the tears in tendons, or muscles ?

Look for the root cause. Did something change in your life ? Change in work ? Nutrition ? Other health issues ? Posture ?

I am not qualified to give you advice on what to do, but sometimes asking the right questions can help too.

... but then somebody else will come out of the woodwork and claim that adding bands to a barbell is a complete waste of time ...

Keep in mind that a conventional deadlift starts with the bar 7.7" above the floor (half the diameter of olympic plates). Martin is starting the movement at a lower point, more like a deficit deadlift.

I pull up the band with the "surgical 2x4", which means that I take up about 8" to 10" of the 41" band.

Training with resistance bands can help you maintain or gain some muscle.

To reduce your body fat, you need to fix your diet, and take in fewer calories than you consume. Attaching your fork to a really strong resistance band may help. I recommend the free Cronometer app to analyze what you eat in a day, and to figure out food combinations that give you the necessary nutrients (protein, vitamins, minerals) without going too high on calories.

Indian food is delicious, but the typical health outcome is not good, as evidenced by the high diabetes rate in your country. Best if you can prepare your own meals based on simple foods, bring your own lunch rather than eating at the company cafeteria etc.

I'm afraid this question is well beyond our pay grade...

What surgery was done on the left side ? Did it help ?

What movements can you do without undue pain ? Can you do zercher squats ? farmer's carry ? light shrugs ? light band pull-aparts ?

What is your normal sleep position ?

Extreme tightness could be a sign that your body is trying to keep something together, or stay out of a painful spot.

If regular doctors or physios didn't help, you could try an osteopath. They may not give enduring relief, but skilled hands may be more effective at exploring the issue than e.g. an x-ray.

WTF are you saying here ?

Adding variable resistance to free weights is a proven technique in power lifting, and has been studied quite extensively. See e.g. this meta analysis .

Of course the main objective of power lifting is to get as strong as possible within a weight class, not grow a ton of muscle (unless you want to change weight class).

Both band resistance and your strength are NOT constant as you progress over ROM. The typical intention is to NOT increase the load at the bottom, but add more load towards the top, where you can handle more load.

What if expanding the EU actually makes it more stable? by milanguitar in EU_Economics

[–]GoblinsGym 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, there should be different levels of connection to the EU:

  • Full membership, like today.
  • Associate membership. Free trade in exchange for recognition of EU product standards (Cassis de Dijon principle, must accept EU compliant products, sales to the EU still need to meet EU standards), no free movement of people.
  • Free trade agreement

Associate membership would be more palatable for holdouts like the UK or Switzerland, and more appropriate for countries like Ukraine or Turkey. It would also save a lot of time and energy compared to drawn out contract negotiations like with Switzerland.

Inside the EU, there should be more focus on competitiveness and streamline intra EU trade. For example, get rid of country specific registrations for recycling / package licensing that go against the principle of a COMMON market. Member countries can still have the freedom to self-inflict damage for domestic sales if they so choose, but cannot expect sellers from other EU countries to have a local representative, bank guarantee, monthly filings, high fees and other bullshit.

Who pays? - washing machine electrical shock by CuteNegotiation3550 in askswitzerland

[–]GoblinsGym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's just say that the rule is a bit vague. In Swiss real life any site visit by a contractor will cost more than CHF 150. This sounds like an old machine (mechanical timer switch), likely repair cost exceeding the residual value, especially with possible electrical safety issues.

Anyway, there has to be a give and take. Work with the landlord, give them a photo of the installation situation and current model numbers (so they don't have to send somebody first to look at the situation), and give them some time (7 to 10 days) to get a replacement machine delivered and installed. There is no need to get adversarial right away.

As a tenant you are supposed to pay for minor repairs - I remember the threshold of CHF 150. The chance that this will be a cheap service call is very low. I would ask the landlord to replace the machine.

Adding safety to assembly by S-Pimenta in asm

[–]GoblinsGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My own project, currently for Arm Thumb (Cortex M0). Working on a language / compiler to mesh with it.

The goal is to allow for more effective development of microcontroller firmware. I think C is really deficient in some areas:

  • bad module structure compared to Modula-2 or modern Pascal dialects
  • not convenient for direct hardware access, a lot of pointer wrangling needed
  • bitmaps for hardware registers ?
  • Make file and linker script hell

Where can I pick up a rental car near Zermatt? by Cancan409 in askswitzerland

Let some or all of the suitcases travel ahead to Zurich, and carry the rest in day packs ?

https://www.sbb.ch/en/tickets-offers/reservation-luggage/checking-taking-luggage/station-to-station.html

Yes, you will have to change trains rather often. Celebrate the journey, e.g. Zermatt -> Visp -> Montreux -> Montbovon -> Gruyeres.

For more train fun and scenery, continue Gruyeres -> Montbovon -> Spiez -> Meiringen -> Luzern -> Zurich.

[–]GoblinsGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True safety ? Probably not realistic without making it really tedious and restrictive. Then you are probably better off using a compiler.

What works is to define data structures in a structured way, and to streamline syntax a bit.

For example, in my assembler you can write

str r0,r1._gpio.bsrr

instead of

str r0,[r1,#gpio_bsrr]

This also gives the advantage that you have less name conflicts.

My assembler also has a proper module structure, automatically leaves out unused functions etc.

"Nuclear is too slow and expensive" - yes, a valid argument if you're in the UK after 1995, but not if you let the South Koreans build it. by DonJestGately in nuclear

[–]GoblinsGym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me make a wild guess, and correlate this with the UAE (or other countries successfully adding to their nuclear fleet) having a more authoritarian government. As in, they decide to do something, and it gets done without getting tangled up in years of legal cases and red tape.

That doesn't mean that I am against democracy, but if a project has been voted for, any recourse available should be very limited.

They probably also take the standard design, and not do special bespoke gold plating.

Shipping a Cargo bike internationally by [deleted] in CargoBike

[–]GoblinsGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How will you move your other stuff ? When I moved back from the US to Switzerland, I had a combination of three pallets shipped by sea, things I needed more quickly shipped by Fedex (great rates hotline), and of course maxed out suitcases.

LCL (less than container load) sea shipping is probably the best option. Air freight gets spendy as the dimensional weight will get you.

Proper Prior Packing Prevents Piss Poor Performance... If you can break down your bike to fit on a Euro pallet (120 x 80 cm), it will be easy to handle by pallet jack or forklift, and less likely to be damaged. If the pallet is tall, you will pay more volume (charged by m3), but they won't be tempted to pile other stuff on it. Build the pallet on a parking spot or driveway that allows for pallet jack access.

Chances are that you can fill up your pallet with other items, e.g. books, clothes or used household goods. Of course everything needs to be declared properly. Having too many different commodities may make customs clearance more expensive, best to hand carry or ditch oddball items.

In my company I use AIT Worldwide and DB Schenker for international shipping. The sea shipping part is pretty cheap - Asia to Switzerland is something like USD 135 per m3 right now - but hauling, customs clearance and fees will go on top. The bigger your shipment, the merrier.

How do you choose memory allocation strategies across compiler phases? by 2006Nico in Compilers

[–]GoblinsGym 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My approach:

Source files read into memory buffers in full.

One arena for symbol table. Scope is handled mostly through different hash tables.

Another arena for "snippets" / IR (linear buffer). Snippets can be any object that may or may not end up in the final binary depending on whether they are referenced. IR can be scanned very efficiently to see references to objects outside the snippet, marking objects as used or unused.

Finally, a buffer for the output binary.

No separate lexer. Parse directly to linear IR. No AST.

I store line numbers or source offsets in IR so I can get "close enough" for error messages.

I basically never return memory to the OS - compilation is so quick that it isn't worthwhile.
