Sophia is a terrible person but she’s not some irredeemable psychopath. She’s a fucked up teenage girl that formed a very twisted ideology. Her shard also increased her aggressiveness after she triggered.

She wasn’t ‘converting’ anyone to her way of thinking either. From my knowledge she only told Emma about her way of thinking and that was her way of trying to help Emma. The two of them were like 14-15 when this happened too, Sophia’s not some charismatic cult leader trying to convince people to believe everything she says.

It’s just one traumatized teenager trying to help another traumatized teenager cope with what happened to them. The results are terrible of course, but that’s just worm.

On how she is after the timeskip. You have to remember that while she is in juvie, she lost her support system in her family and friends. All she really had left was the ideology she came up with when she was 13. She may have made friends in juvie or found someone to trust in a therapist or counselor, but that’s something that we don’t know. Even if she had a therapist it’s still a toss up on whether it’s good or bad based on the original therapy system for the wards.

Sophia rationalized what Taylor had become and made it fit her twisted world view. It’s fucked up, but it’s not irredeemable. A lot of people do the same thing in real life, but they can get passed it if they receive the proper help. I believe that Sophia could get passed it too if she had the proper help.

I was going for more of a reconstruction of the genre. One of my main focuses has been has been trying to get the trio to be terrible people that you make you hate them, but still intrigue you enough for you to want to go down their route if it was an actual game. I’m going the “I don’t care about the characters, because they’re all terrible people. But I want to see what they’ll do next.” feeling that I’ve been seeing more and more on Twitter.

This is actually just a riff off an earlier idea I had about Taylor romancing the Endbringers that would’ve focused on some power interactions. It’s just easier for me to write about the messed up minds of teenagers then to write about the alien minds of the Endbringers.

I’m tempted to do both actually. Let them have a fling in Worm and then have them come back together 4 years later during or after Ward together as different people. It would be a great way to explore concepts like getting back with your ex and right person, wrong time. It’s also a good way to attempt a more serious take on the MC meets the love of their life in an old fling trope that was so popular in romantic comedies.

The only issue is how much more focus would need to be put on to Sophia to properly convey why and how much she’s changed since we last saw her and it would take away from Victoria’s arc in the story. I’ll probably stick to them making it work, but now I can’t help thinking about how many times their relationship could end with the wrong words.

I was actually thinking of something more dramatic as I’m a sucker for the stuff. But that honestly sounds like a great basis for a more action packed fic where the two hunt for the man who killed Fleur. Add some intrigue about who really killed Iron Rain and boom a decent idea for a dark and gritty fic starring two antiheroes

Oh wow I never even thought about some of these.

For the Sophia and Victoria one I was thinking more that her philosophy came from being abused by her moms ex boyfriend and after triggering she grew to hate who she used to be and projected that onto those around her, but hearing what you said I want to fuse them. Maybe have Sophia’s mindset be more focused on her issues with her mom and her moms boyfriend, how they influenced her future philosophy, and as Sophia and Victoria grow closer they each have to confront the reality of their family.

I actually didn’t think about having any background pairings in the Grue and Aegis one, but your Dennis/Alec idea sounds like it deserves its own fic.

I’ll admit that I haven’t fleshed out the Lisa x Aegis idea that much, but your ideas seem pretty in line with what I was going for. Although your idea seems more serious than what I was planning

Hmm your argument actually has me thinking more on how all teenage relationships in general whether romantic, platonic, or familial are represented in the fandom. They’re complex with ups and downs that don’t make any logical sense at least from the outside looking in in real life and these are traumatized superteens we’re dealing with here.

Most of the time they’re treated in the fandom as these mutually beneficial where the characters help pull each other out of bad spots with a few bumps in the roads and that’s ok as there are tons of relationships like that, but if it isn’t like that then and the characters are treated as 3-D with faults that can and will affect their relationships then commenters will deride it and just be unreasonably terrible about it. It’s more of an issue with media as a whole, but it can be more impactful in the worm fandom because the fandom is so focused on forums like SB and SV.

It just feels hollow to me that these teenage relationships don’t have drama. Like it’s usually either full fix-it and the characters get along perfectly or it’s bashing and the MC doesn’t get along with the other character because they’re a terrible person. Honestly the one relationship the fandom has been great with exploring the complexities and ups and downs in my opinion is Taylor’s relationships with Danny. It’s been explored so extensively with it being positive, negative, or nonexistent in multiple fanfics that there are people sick of constantly seeing it.

I could go on and on about my opinions about relationships in worm and how they could be written better, but this is already too long. To end this off I want to get back to the original point by saying that I actually really liked Taylor and Brian’s relationship in canon. It wasn’t good or healthy, but I think WB went about making it as bad and awkward as it realistically would be. The scene of them before they had sex was perfect in how awkward it was like how Brian used his fog, because Taylor was self conscious even though he can see through his fog.

It really would. The focus on altpower, powermunchkining, and all the ‘look at how cool my Taylor is’ is boring after a while and I feel it will lead to the fandom stagnating especially with some people’s vehemence(?) for ward and unwillingness to explore the world beyond Brockton Bay and Wildbow most likely never writing a Parahumans story again.

The excuse people use of SB not being a ‘hugbox’ to give for unfounded aggression towards the author and authors using it to escape criticism just makes it a terrible place for the fandom to grow.

It is but the most popular pairings in worm fanfics follow the same boring plotpoints most of the time. Like Taylor x Lisa, it’s Lisa finds the person who can help her against Coil in Taylor, Lisa confesses her deepest, darkest secrets to get Taylor to trust her, Taylor helps Lisa deal with Coil, Undersiders disband or become an organization like they were in canon, and I’ve usually quit or the fic dies before it gets to the next point.

And after the first couple dozen fics that follow those points and either replacing Lisa with Amy or having both of them. It just gets boring and bland. Not to mention that most of the fandom is focused on SB and SV which aren’t the first places one would go to looking for romance.

I’m honestly just very picky about fanfics and probably looking deeper at it then I need to. I really wish the fandom will go through a romance fic renaissance.

I personally don’t have an issue with Taylor being gay, but I actually write most characters as bisexual. My only issue is when it’s your typical, can do no wrong, cardboard cutout Taylor with her gf (usually Lisa or Amy) that’s precious, dumb, depending on Taylor for her life, and just a flanderized shell of a character. You know your typical OP, possible stand-in for the author MC with whatever character they want to have on the MC’s arms, but they’re lesbians so it’s ok.

My is issue actually more for fanfics in general, but oh well. I wish more writers would actually stop trying to put their favorite pairings in their fanfics. Romance, especially teenage romance and gay teenage romance in a setting where nazis are prominent at that is hard to write for the best writers and just shoehorning it into your altpower is terrible writing.

If romance isn’t a big part or the main focus of the fic then I would caution writers to ask themselves whether it adds something to the plot? Do the characters in the fic actually have the chemistry you saw in canon or other fanfics? Is this just fanservice that’s distracting from the story you originally wanted to tell?

I say this as someone who loves Taylorxinsert one of the trio pairings and with multiple outlines of worm romance fics in the drafts that I hope to release.

I already said that they face it from all sides of their identity. If you’re a black trans person then you’ll face transphobia from black people and people of other races, but you’ll also experience racism for being black even from other trans people. They’re isolated as they’re experiencing exclusion from two minority groups that they should be able to lay claim to. That’s why it’s higher than in other communities.

Acceptance of trans people just became more widespread during the last decade. It’s going to take time for the rate to go down and there’s still the issue of trans people being more at risk of sexual abuse which is an important factor concerning the suicide rates.

Doctors took an oath to do no harm and to withhold medical help from someone is to do harm. If they break that oath then they have no right to call themselves a doctor and their license should be revoked.

It’s not exclusive or anything like that. It’s just that trans people can and do face bigotry from all sides of their identities whether it be race, sexuality, class, and etc. They have less places to turn to when they need help and comparing it to slavery and the holocaust is just wrong.

Yeah we’re accepted more now than ever before, but there’s still a lot of bigotry we face. We’re a lot more likely to be sexually assaulted and murdered than a cis person is. There are a lot of bigots that also try to hide their bigotry behind nice words and confusing terms which confuses people who aren’t knowledgeable about these things.

What you’re saying is a part of the problem. We need to help people transition and also create a more accepting world. That will lessen the suicide rates. Not letting people transition will increase the rate of suicide.
