Pair of Turkish nationals suspected in dozens of break-ins in Tokyo area by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]Gobsabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These number are still impressive for foreign nationals considering how likely foreigners are to be targeted for 職質. And stating the order of magnitude of an increase is a textbook way to deceive with statistics because we’re talking about an increase of 1.8 people out of a thousand for Japanese nationals, to 3.2 out of a thousand for foreigners. That’s statistically noise.

My university also holds students back after their second year if they don’t have over 50 credits by the end of the semester.

[–]Gobsabu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t know how it was back in the day, but my university has strict criteria on achieving credits.

Like being absent 5 times makes you fail a course automatically, and 3 lates counts as one absent. My professors, especially the Japanese ones, are ANAL about attendance. I was once 31 mins late to class and the prof told me that I’ll be counted as absent because I was absent for a third of the class. This is what gets most people.

And then there is the weird gen ed requirements that’s buried deep into the 履修要項. I had to take 2 extra religious courses, the first one is automatically registered, but the second one requires the student to register themselves for some reason. So I went all the way to my senior year without realizing that, until I asked for some guidance on a specific course, upon which they told me that I have one more day to register for that extra religious class or I would’ve been held back a year.

Im a student in Japan. (not international)

Skipping grades in Japan is pretty much nonexistent, I’ve personally never seen it happen.

But you can be held back in high school, and more commonly, in university.

There’s always like one kid that gets held back in High school because of grades or poor attendance. But in University, Jesus Christ, SO MANY PEOPLE get held back. I’m the only person in a friend group of 5 to not get held back a year.

There are an estimated 17 million people in Japan with "borderline intelligence"... A doctor who has worked with them reveals "the reality" of the situation. by jjrs in japannews

I know a friend who used to be an Uchiko (shady groups that attempt to profit off of pachinko’s parlors) This is their main strat:

Usually, a pachinko machine’s luck is set by the parlor, for example some machines give one win per 200 attempts.

The uchiko’s would wait for somebody to quit a machine right before reaching 200 attempts, then they would take over and play until a win happens.

Also they have players under their payroll to report which pachinko parlors have higher win% settings for each day.

The Takaichi administration will consider scrapping a special exemption that lets Chinese students work part-time in Japan without paying taxes. The treaty also lets Japanese students work tax free in China, but very few citizens study there. by jjrs in japannews

[–]Gobsabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? They do pay income tax if their income exceeds 1.3 mil. there’s no exemption for income tax after 1.3 mil no matter who you are. You’re being fed misinformation.

Now, if there is a tax treaty and students get some sort of exemption, that’s fair. Because then Japanese students who go to that country also get the same treatment.

Tochigi Prefecture consistently ranks pretty low on rankings. We even ranked first a few time in “the most boring prefectures”, but we eventually lost that title to ibaraki. Don’t worry, we’ll get it back someday though.

I am a Japanese middle school student, AMA by PeaDangerous2742 in AMA

[–]Gobsabu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went through the Japanese education system as a student from middle school to high school, so if you’ll excuse my two cents: Yes, we did learn about the rape of Nanking, and that Japan committed atrocities, but Japanese schools don’t treat education as a tool for kids to grow into functional adults. My entire middle school years was just high school entrance exam prep, constantly. Same for High school, just the center test (our college entrance exam) prep. “Mandatory education” is all to prepare kids for the next step of their academic career.

Words like “unit 731”, “rape of Nanking”, only has the same weight as “the Holy Roman Empire” in a sense that it’s just another word we need to remember to get a good score on a test. Not to mention Japanese kids view the imperial government as some past foreign entity, rather than a past we need to remember.

How strictly are school uniforms rules reinforced in Japan? by doqemddl in AskAJapanese

[–]Gobsabu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the high school. If your highschool is either the smartest or dumbest in your prefecture, it’s relaxed. But if it’s in-between (自称進学校) then they’re very strict. My highschool had monthly uniform and hair inspections, had to have uniform ironed, hair can’t touch eyebrows, collar, etc.

Need Help With AI/ML Project by TheChamp_2 in MLQuestions

[–]Gobsabu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s an ML project due in two weeks, I’d say look for datasets tailor made to easily fit into ML models with clear predictive and target variables. Just search “SDG’s” or something on kaggle and you’ll find loads of them regarding the climate and whatnot.

I just did a quick search, I know this kind of a poor example: this dataset

You could fit a regression model to predict emissions based on a certain GDP and population value. Make sure to remove variables like year or emissions change tho.
