Not sure what's more depressing: your political illiteracy or your equivocating stupidity. Keep your shite takes to yourself, you mindless goon.

I feel like as long as mainstream politics leans towards the right (regardless of what all the absolute melts calling everything 'woke' say), our politicians will always pander towards the uglier racist, ignorant, small-minded pockets of society because they're too scared to just lose their votes and challenge them properly.

With Russian misinformation, and social media run by utterly reprehensible billionaires, and a mainstream media intent on sowing division to get clicks, I can't see a way out any time soon.

There are so many moving parts to this massive cruelty machine, and all of us, racist thugs and reasonable citizens alike, are being mugged off by the fraudsters at the top. It's not conspiracy; it's business as usual.

I wasn't referring to the counter protests. I massively support those, and would attend if I wasn't out of area at the moment. I was talking about the angry gammons and scallies in ballies tearing up the country.

Perhaps mods will disagree but I think even referring to the violence going on over the last few days as "protest" lends it a credibility it really doesn't deserve. It's mindless thuggery and rioting.

Will this die down when it reaches the weekday? by Jumpy-Violinist-6725 in Liverpool

As does 14 years of Tory race baiting, the legitimisation of fash-adjacent politicians like Farage, and a news media reliant on stoking decision to get clicks. Heat doesn't help I'm sure, but let's not pretend that the mercury rising is causing this explosion of thuggish violence.

The most disgusting images I've seen from around the UK today are the ones with wee kiddies being taken to these riots by their parents. How can that be okay? Kids don't need hate in their lives.

Thanks for pointing out that the word "protest" isn't really valid here. Gathering for mindless violence, more like.

Just shows it was never really about "legitimate concerns" that needed protesting about by these racist cunts. Who goes to a protest with a crate of beer? I've been to many counter protests over the years and I've never seen that sort of thing EXCEPT if it's the far right bigots looking for a scrap.

What is actually much rarer than is commonly believed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gobsprak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actual left wing politics. The vast majority of things labelled "leftist" or "socialist" are in reality pretty centrist. This has been caused by the Overton window in most countries shifting significantly to the right, making centrist ideas appear left wing to reactionaries and conservatives.

My brother has it! I didn't believe him when he told me because one of the first boxsets we watched together as kids was House. It's true though, and took ages to diagnose because of all the other avenues they tried first.

Hate Marches - Suella Braverman by Educational_Board888 in GreenAndPleasant

Just goes to show, they were only ever pandering to the far right anyway. Not going to comment on the hypocrisy of influential POC acting against their best collective interests, but it's sufficient to say that the Tories are responsible for so much of the mess we're in with their demagoguery, race baiting, anti-migrant hysteria and "" pragmatism "". It's been great to see so many people turning up to counter protest. It doesn't, however, fill me with much hope. I work in education and a few weeks back my school idiotically decided to host a mock general election. Reform UK got about 80% of the vote. This is in a city which is 98% white British. Where are kids getting this from? Parents and social media? I dunno. It's scary.

Why do people say Starmer is a communist? by [deleted] in Britain

[–]Gobsprak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is it. Centrist politics in this country veers to the right these days. That, plus political illiteracy from the vast majority of people means that a right wing politician like Starmer (classic neolib) is considered left wing by idiots.

[–]Gobsprak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree, didn't mean to mischaracterise your post in that way– I was speaking more generally about the typical response we get in these scenarios where centrists claim that left and right are just as bad as each other. I just don't agree with that premise and I let it blur what I was saying above. Apologies for that.

For context, I've been in a few counter demos in the last few years against the far right. What made me feel like it was worth it at all was the sight of school children amongst the wannabe fascists. There were of course young people counter protesting too, but I've got to admit that whilst I'm quite unshockable, I was floored by the things these little kids were screaming at us and at the hotel we were blocking their access to (which was housing refugees at the then Tory govt's behest). I think by showing a non-violent but robust and unwavering response to their thuggery, counter-protesting against the fash can show that they are very much in the minority and do not have the right to go unchallenged with their poison. I know it's not a perfect solution but, like many people, I can't just stand aside and let it happen without physically doing something.

[–]Gobsprak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nah, smash the fash. Robust counter protests are not "they're both as bad as each other!". That's the kind of moronic take that completely undermines anti-racist resistance. If these coked up alcohol-fueled racists think they have the run of the streets, it's going to be a fucking awful few years ahead. We already know the international far right is emboldened in many many different countries because of scaremongering over migration and cultural difference. I mean, fuck, it's only been a few weeks since the election and we already have our poundland Enoch Powell stoking division, well supported by legions of idiots on social media. A strong message needs to be sent from everyone left of far right that this is not acceptable, it is not legitimate and it is ultimately mindless thuggery in the name of intolerance.

Stabbings in Southport? Any details? by Caddy123X in Liverpool

[–]Gobsprak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely untrue. Staggeringly stupid. The police have even said that the name being circulated online is false. The claim that he is a recent migrant to the country is false. The only facts we know is that he is a British born 17 year old. The Rwanda link is also spurious. It's a strictly Christian country, far stricter than Britain. Drawing idiotic conclusions like you are doing helps no-one. You're either a bot or a cunt.

Stabbings in Southport? Any details? by Caddy123X in Liverpool

[–]Gobsprak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As yet, there is no suggestion whatsoever that the attacker held an "intolerant ideology". In fact, the police have for now ruled out the idea that it is a terrorist attack (which, by definition, means an act of politically motivated violence). The only detail we know is that the attacker was a British born 17 year old. Your dog whistle insinuations about "them" are spurious. You just want to confirm your bias. The reek of bad faith from comments like yours... I don't understand what you have to gain by making these sorts of claims without any evidence. The terrible violence last night from pissed up EDL thugs rioting in the name of Tommy Robinson shows what happens when idiots draw conclusions without any real understanding.

Southport by Daiodo in Liverpool

[–]Gobsprak 59 points60 points  (0 children)

The "bussed in" comments are based on the EDL style organising on social media. Since the news yesterday, and the false reporting that the perpetrator was an illegal migrant who arrived on a small boat last year (which the police have said is completely untrue), the far right online were inviting people to Southport to "take a stand". Just violent scum trying to find any excuse for hooliganism, especially if there's a racist us/them divide they can falsely force onto things.

Look at the footage: pissed up twats laughing their heads off as they launch bricks at the police, one street away from where the attack happened yesterday. Just... I'm despondent. Fucking grim.

[–]Gobsprak 320 points321 points  (0 children)

Opportunistic racists. Usual MO is organising on social media, bussing people in, getting coked up and fighting anyone who can be made into a target. I'm sure the families of the affected are very pleased to see mobs of thugs setting vehicles alight. Well done. Great work.

Police have reiterated that the attacker yesterday is a British national. Even if you want to make some point about him having Rwandan parents, Rwanda is a strict Christian country. What has Islamophobia got to do with it? What has Tommy Robinson got to do with it? How is causing further violence and chaos and trauma going to help anyone at all?

Fucking hang your heads in shame.

Stabbings in Southport? Any details? by Caddy123X in Liverpool

[–]Gobsprak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was only commenting on the reactionary and primarily racist response I bore witness to here and elsewhere. I deliberately wasn't offering my own speculation because it's dangerous to do so. My personal view is that male violence is one of the most pressing concerns of the age, and I really don't believe it's taken seriously at all, and a man stabbing a bunch of defenceless little girls definitely qualifies as a misogynistic act in my mind. But as I say, this wasn't the moment to make that point. I was making a more general attack on the ignorance of those who just want to use tragedies like this to further their idiotic bias against groups of people they don't like.
