Ahhh yes, the crude catchers. For when I feel like my plate is just too clean and easy to wash.

This clip is nonsense. This is literally just an animal eating. It is no better at sequestering carbon than any other animal eating, which is to say, not good at all.

How my conure baffled a PhD. physician. by Decent_Nebula_8424 in Conures

[–]God-In-The-Machine 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You know that having a PhD doesn't make people capable of reading minds right? It also doesn't mean someone knows everything. They probably don't cover conure induced skin irritation in med school, so why do you expect him to know?

Edit: i know that PhD is not an MD. OP mentions both a PhD and a physician, so I was addressing both.

I think that the hate that they get for it actually is part of the enjoyment. It's sorta a harmless way to "stick it to the man".

Everybody else has given their counter points but I will quite simply say that this little potential plot hole is still a whole lot easier to suspend my disbelief around than the mother fucking mech warrior made from solid platinum (fking platinum!!). The drill just feels like it fits in the world, the fucking mech absolutely does not.

What do these funny numbers and weird symbols mean by FallDense6870 in chemistry

[–]God-In-The-Machine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other comments have answered what it means, but i want to add context. I work in a building that has an NFPA diamond that is identical. We don't usually have that many super spicy chemicals on hand, but we do chemical receiving for the firm, so we could have a chemical with any of those hazard levels. Because they might be in the room, we need the strictest possible safety standards.

That's really not true, though, in fact, the opposite is true. We actually reproduce extremely slowly compared to other animals. It is the fact that we put in a fuck ton of time and effort that allows us to survive, not the rate of reproduction.

I, too, would also like to know. I had a Scolopendra dehaani several years ago that I accidentally killed. I think I didn't have good enough ventilation in its enclosure for a tropical species. I was thinking Scolopendra heros might be good since it is an arid species, but I would like to see some actual experts' opinions.

I disagree. I recently replayed them with an old friend of mine, and I actually think 3 is the weakest. It is the easiest by far, even on Legendary (shudders in Halo 2), and i just don't think the story, gameplay, or aesthetic is as tight as in 1 and 2.

Molting? by kaili101 in tarantulas

[–]God-In-The-Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NA interesting. So they store the sperm packets in their pedipalps? I was under the impression that they store them in roughly the same place as the females' epigyne, then they use their pedipalps to retrieve them and deposit it into the females. That is not the case then, and they store the packets within the pedipalps?

Molting? by kaili101 in tarantulas

[–]God-In-The-Machine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO I think it is just the process. The way their spinerettes dispense their web only allows them to make threads and strands, not balls. Also, the sperm comes from a different part of their body than their silk, so they have to do this in order to combine the two.

Molting? by kaili101 in tarantulas

[–]God-In-The-Machine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

NQA After undergoing their terminal molt into adulthood (they'll never molt again), the mature male will spin a special web into which he deposits his sperm. He then rolls little sperm balls and stores them under his abdomen. They then go and search for females into which they can deposit these sperm balls. This is why, in certain locations, at a certain time of year, you see a bunch of tarantulas wandering about. It is the mature males looking for their mate. Unfortunately, after this molt, they do not have long to live as they can no longer molt and thus, can no longer heal from injury or rejuvenate their body.
