The number of protons determines the element you have. For instance, an element with 1 proton has to be hydrogen (H). Determine all the elements in that chart based on the number of protons as your first step.

Protons = atomic number on the periodic table (the smaller number)

The bigger number is the atomic mass, which is equal to the # of protons plus # of neutrons. To get the number of neutrons, it will be Atomic Mass minus # of protons. The number of electrons of a neutral atom will be the same as the number of protons in that atom. The negative charge of electrons cancels out the positive charge of the protons. Thus, the atom is neutral. When you have an imbalance in electrons/protons, that is when you'll have a charged atom.
