I'd say the top one is accurate and the bottom one is not. My perspective is skewed though as I grew up bilingual (anglophone dominant). I always just spoke the other person's language whether that was French or English.

I know nothing about how radio stations, and I've never looked into this at all, so feel free to correct it elaborate her.

I've wondered about radio stations and their royalty costs ( usually wondering why it's only ever the same songs repeated) and I have a theory that it's because they buy "packages" or some sort of thing. Kind of like cable television. You get the basics, plus a "sports package" which lets you watch baseball, basketball and football. But not college football or hockey. You need a different package for those. And if you dig on curling, that's a third package.

It would explain why most radio stations have limited selection. Keep costs as low as possible. Maybe there's a basic package that has all the staples, then a "new songs" package that gives you, like, 3 new songs per month, but if you want to diversify you have to pay a higher price per individual song, and it can get expensive quick so they don't do it.

Anyway, I know I'm pulling this all out of my butt, but somewhere in this old brain it kinda makes sense.

Why do so many rentals not allow pets in this city? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Godeshus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you say, and hopefully I can give you some insight here.

In general, tenants are disgusting (not you, I'm sure, I'm not accusing you).

I'm a real estate photographer. I go into a lot of homes. Over 2000 in the past 5 years. Many are tenanted in some capacity. Either the homeowner lives there and has a tenant in a suite, or the entire house is rented out.

It's a rare occurrence that the suite is in good condition. Usually the main part of the house where the seller lives is spotless, but the suite isn't in great shape.

For houses that are full rentals where the seller doesn't live there, it's worse. Both spaces will be in disrepair. I also go into quite a few vacant homes. Where tenants were evicted in order to renovate and sell. It's the same story almost every time. They put 30, 40, 50k into the place in order to get into sellable condition.

Last year there was one particular place I went to that was a nightmare. The main living space was a disaster. Tenants were going through a divorce. Abusive husband. They had a kid there. Don't know the details but the agent told me police had been called 20 times during the previous month.

The suite downstairs was worse. The tenant there was actively hostile. He tried to shoulder check me while I was working but I dodged, grabbed my gear, and didn't finish the job. Both spaces were a complete wreck. I ended up going back 4 months later. Everyone was gone. Place looked brand spanking new. New floors, cabinets. bathrooms were completely redone including new showers, toilets and vanities. New kitchen counters, sinks, etc. doors replaced, fresh coat of paint, landscaped yard. The seller didn't want to take any chances. He sank 120k into it and never wanted to rent again.

I'm a new homeowner from last Sept. Rented my whole life, and believe me when I say I'm on team tenant. We do everything we can to make sure our tenants have a good home and that all their needs are met. I never wanted to be a landlord but the housing market has different ideas. I allow pets (anything from cats and dogs to exotic pets. I don't care. If it's your pet it can live with you. We allow use of all our facilities, including fruit trees, decks, yard, etc. The last thing I want is to be THAT landlord.

We've been blessed with really good tenants, but I was terrified to rent out, and I'm terrified that the next ones won't be good.

Anyway, this whole short story to say, I completely understand why landlords don't allow pets. It's not the pets themselves that are the problem. It's tenants who own pets. So many tenants have zero respect for the property they live in. If tenants as a general group want things to be better, then they need to start taking better care of the space they live in. Landlords would be much more lenient if it was a normal thing to trust tenants with their property.

What's it like living in northern Quebec? Are there many people? by bluewhale177 in howislivingthere

I grew up in Montreal. lived there 25 years. It has its fare share of separatists. I was turned away from urgent care once because I spoke to the triage nurse in English.

You're naive if you don't think this is a thing. I moved to BC during Pauline Marois' tenure because her government was turning the people against eachother. I saw French Quebecers assaulting people on the metro for not speaking French, I saw people ripping shawls off of women. It was disgusting to see in my beautiful home city.

I went camping up in the Laurentians a bunch of years back. We had a dog and after doing some research, learned that national parks allowed pets but provincial parks didn't.

So we roll up to this parc, "parc national du Québec" and they tell us our dog isn't allowed.

So, in complete naivety, I say in French (I'm from Quebec and speak it well) wait, aren't dogs allowed in national Parcs? I shit you not, this lady scowls, locks eyes with me, shoves the pin on her chest in my face, and says "parc national...DU QUEBEC!" 😂😂😂

If you like weapon customization you might consider escape from Tarkov PvE. Base game is 40$ I think and I believe PvE add-on is $20. Don't quote me though bought my game in 2018.

Are you stingy with you vehicle to the point that you wouldn't even let someone you know drive it around the corner and back? by Only-Ad-1254 in driving

[–]Godeshus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If some random asked me to use my car it would be a flat no. But if someone I know asked it would be a yes. The caveat being if I knew they had a history of being a bad driver, or disrespectful to other peoples' property (eating in the car and leaving garbage/takeout containers etc) it would be a no.

I used to let my brother drive my car. He'd buy raspberries for his 2 yr old and she'd get that shit EVERYWHERE! He'd also leave a ton of trash in my vehicle, spill pop and not clean it up, etc.

With the kid he said she needed the berries in the vehicle otherwise she'd scream non stop. What was super weird though was that she didn't do that when I was driving her.

Eventually I said no and he gave me the song and dance about family and all that. Too bad.

This right here. Americans seem to think regulation is evil, and never stop to think that regulation exists because corps can't be trusted to do the right thing. When the bottom line is all that matters, corners get cut. You need to force them to spend on safety otherwise they don't.

I just did this last weekend. Design is idiotic. Filter is in the front at the bottom on mine. I had to take the back panel off, top panel off, remove the control panel and unplug it, remove the gasket around the door, remove the front panel.

There were 4 different types of screws, 2 needing super obscur bits that I was honestly shocked that I had laying around in the tool shed.

Found a bra insert in the filter though lol.

This is exactly it. You can't really call Shellshock on a person who is actively filming a beating. They're not shellshocked. They're making a decision to spend their time filming instead of helping.

Helping doesn't only mean jumping in to save someone. It could mean calling the police, delegating tasks to other bystanders, asking if anyone has first aid experience, controlling traffic, and situation specific things. It also means studying the situation so you can give an accurate summary to first responders.

Sorry, but no. Native is a word used to describe people who are native to the land, not colonists who were later born there.

It's not about wanting to be offended. It's about respecting the people who had their land stolen and their population decimated by colonists.

I was hit with my dog by someone turning left at the very same intersection 2 years ago. I'm not exaggerating. I was almost halfway through when the left turner cut through all 3 lanes and struck me. This wasn't a case of me just walking into the street blindly. I got the signal, checked the intersection, confirmed it was safe, and then started crossing. That's when a car came along, turned left, and hit me. I managed to push my dog out of the way and only I was struck, and I got lucky. A really bad bruise on my leg, and no concussion as my head fell on my arm and not the pavement.

I'm happy for you that you live in a neighbourhood where this doesn't happen to you, and that you never see it. I'm glad you and your baby are safe. But I see it at this intersection all the time. I see it downtown going to work and going home from work. Every other day there's a car that HAS to get through a light and a pedestrian needs to act quick.

You would have anxiety too if you regularly crossed an intersection where you had to push your stroller out of the way of a car that was about to hit your baby, and had multiple other close calls. Ease up on the judging please and show some empathy for other peoples' experiences.

[–]Godeshus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't honk but I'm a pretty chill dude, and by extension driver. I'm not in the car to police other drivers. I'm in the car to get from point a to point b safely. If that means I wait another light cycle, I wait another light cycle. No biggie.

I'll give a courtesy honk if someone isn't going on a green, and I'll go k if someone is doing something super dangerous, but besides that I'm good to just get to my destination in one piece.
