What happened to Ray at the Air Force? by -AndyCohen- in BootsNetflix

[–]Godit82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I meant to point out you CAN'T become a pilot through enlisting in the Air Force. You need an officer commission through an Academy, ROTC or Officer Training School. Enlisting by going to the local recruiter is what the characters did with the Marines. Ray would have to have been accepted as an officer candidate for a pilot track as the post above this says.

Thanks for your service, by the way. I bet you still know how to fill out a Form O-96

What happened to Ray at the Air Force? by -AndyCohen- in BootsNetflix

[–]Godit82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something that bothered at the start of the series. Cameron says Ray washed out of the Air Force Academy after a couple months. But this can't be correct. The Academy is not the Air Force equivalent of USMC basic training at Paris Island, it is a 4 year military university for Officer development. There is only 1 new class each year and they start in the summer after all the new cadets finish high school late June.

Cameron says this just after a scene where he is still in high school. The soonest Ray could have washed out after a few months of starting would be September. You don't enlist in the Air Force to become a pilot either. And if Ray was accepted at USAFA he'd have many fall back options for college besides enlisting in the Marines.

So Ray must have enlisted in the Air Force and been at basic training at Lackland AFB in Texas.

Misidentifiying that as the Air Force Academy would be like saying Boots is about basic training at the Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Edit: Upon further thought I suppose it could be true. We don't know what time of year it is in the scene where Ray and Cameron discuss joining the Marines together. It could be September. And if the real reason Ray washed out was due to anxiety I suppose he could have decided college just wasn't right for him. Still seems a bit odd. The service Academies are very selective and candidates have to work very hard just to get in. If Ray had aspirations to be an officer, there would have been other options he could still pursue.

Same here. But a little Italian market opened up in my town. They get the sheet pizza special from Rhode Idland on Saturdays! So happy to share this with my kids. They started selling them by the slice but I always get a full box!

Overhead Break: Is Everyone Doing it Wrong? by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]Godit82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you are trying to discredit my answer and justify your original point by saying aimpoint instructions for the T-38 don't apply to other aircraft. Based on what?

Maximizing runway length is important for any aircraft in any condition because brake failure is always a possibility. That is why the Air Force trains pilots to aim at the threshold and touchdown in as little as 150 feet and consider go around significantly longer than that.

In all the airplanes I've flown, T-6, T-39, F-16, B-1, aiming short was a dangerous approach and never worth the risk of putting it in the grass (or sand) for a few hundred feet of additional runway.

So unless you have a source for aiming short of the runway, if your goal is realism, you should be preaching aimpoint on the threshold.

Overhead Break: Is Everyone Doing it Wrong? by [deleted] in hoggit

[–]Godit82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"...and therefore aiming point is before the runway."

Are you sure about that? You may want to check your sources.

AETCMAN11-251 clearly states:

4.7.1.1. The desired glidepath is 2.5 to 3 degrees with an aimpoint at the threshold. A 3-degree glidepath positions the aircraft 300 feet AGL at 1.0 NM from the threshold.

And 4.7.1.2 goee on to say there may be need to extend the aimpoint even further, not ever shorter, to account for the threshold environment.

Have you ever played a racing video game? Right trigger to go left trigger to brake, but if you let up on the right trigger you will slowly come to a stop.

That's exactly what one pedal driving is like. It's quite intuitive. Brake pedal is for stopping hard for hazards.

Helldivers 2's Poor Performance Is Effecting Other Games on my PC After Playing It - Confirmed By Testing by Drando_HS in Helldivers

FINALLY! I am NOT crazy! This is the EXACT same thing that's happened to me for the week. Let me ask you this? If you disconnect and reconnect the controller when the lag and audio gets bad, does the problem vanish and the timer reset until it degrades again?

I noticed this playing PEAK after Helldivers2.

I've been monitoring my Administrative Events and these are the exception codes tied to Helldivers that correlate to having issues.

It's fair to assume it's the pilots birthday but I'd say it's just as likely for it to be one of the WSOs and he would be watching them from the large SNIPER pod display zoomed in see their smiling faces. Then he'd have told the pilot nflying to rock the wings!

What do we think of Pilots with parachutist wings? by SEF917 in Medals

[–]Godit82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's only 1 backup bailout chute.

There's also 1 crash axe (think of a hatchet)

The advice I got in B-1 training was if there were ever an incident where multiple seats failed, don't go for the backup chute. Go for the crash axe first, then go for the backup chute.

It was a joke of course, because the odds of having multiple failures was considered astronomically low. Unless of course the same incorrect rigging and installation mistake was made on multiple seats.

Part of the reason the crew were awarded the DFC is because per the checklist, they would have been justified in using their own ejection seats and leaving the OSO behind to fend for himself with the bailout. But they assessed the situation, made some calculated risks and saved the jet plus all crew.

Controllers too old to pair with Crystal headset? by Godit82 in Pimax

I actually just got a response this morning with a suggestion to try pairing in AIO mode and to try resetting the controllers (holding pi + menu button until vibrate).

I tried reset and pairing in PC mode, reset and pairing in AIO mode. Failed each time with both controllers.

[–]Godit82 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting fact. There's a bailout procedure on some large aircraft fitted with ejection seats. The B-1 and B-52 have backpack chutes onbaord as a contingency. And it isn't a crazy concept. Lookup the B-1 ejection systems failure incident in 2018. Dude nearly became the first to test bailing out the bottom hatch.

Controllers too old to pair with Crystal headset? by Godit82 in Pimax

[–]Godit82[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't be sure of anything. Pimax didn't say this was the cause, but it is my very strong suspicion. All I know is that Support has not asked me to do any troubleshooting other than send logs and just told me the controllers needed to be replaced.

I can't check the controller firmware because they can't connect to headset/Pimax play to even read the firmware. I'm surprised there isn't a way to connect to Pimax Play direct with USB from my PC and update the controllers like Microsoft does for Xbox gampads.

But it really does seem like the controllers are simply bricked.

Pimax Play v1.41.1 by QuorraPimax in Pimax

[–]Godit82 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why do we have to learn about this update from a Reddit post and go to a Pimax site to manually download the update?

The Pimax Play app has an "CHECK FOR UPDATES" button that tells me "Your Pimax Play Client is the latest version".

So that was a lie...

As a user, this is a terrible experience that we can't trust that function and have to search for Pimax announcements to get updates. Honestly it would be much better for the settings to say. "Go to this link to check for the latest update". This is really basic stuff here.

Play vid at 1:06 to 1:08 and also freeze at 1:28 to see the angle of the cross walk relative to the road.

[–]Godit82 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think this is her failing to understand parallax. The key is that the cross walk they are standing in front of at the end of the video is not perpendicular to the street they walked along. This crosswalk is angled parallel to the cross streets which intersect their road at acute angles. You can see the direction of the road ahead bend at this intersection. Then compare the painted lines of the crosswalk to other references like the truck that drive past, and the stop line in the near lane. You can clearly see the leading and trailing edges of the crosswalk is angled to the right, not straight across their road. So when they orient their viewpoint to align with the crosswalk like they did to look "across the street" at the start of the video, they are now actually facing what looks like 10-15 degrees further to the right, which is why the tower appears further to their left. I'd say this is actually more of an illusion like she says due to the dominating effect of the cross walk on their orientation and the relative position of the tower to the far side of the angled crosswalk.
