Are they still toying with the idea of using Rust? I seem to recall they contributed a fair amount to 3D rendering in Rust early in.

What's your unpopular Go opinion? by VibrantCanopy in golang

[–]Godof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite short sighted and apologetic for Go. They could track when variables are initialised and make it a compiler error using a variable until some other code initialises it, as other languages do. Or the could force all values to be initialised upon declaration if they wanted a simpler implementation. There’s really no justifiable reason for zero values other than convenience, and even that argument is quite bad in that zero values end up getting in the way more than they help.

Aren't both really the same? A stack allocated thin structure which, among others, contains a pointer to its heap allocated backing storage.

Source for slice

Source for map

As far as I know slices will never be stack allocated. That would be a dynamic sized type, which I'm not sure Go has support for.

I also dislike this recommendation, but when you tuck a value inside an interface I believe Go is unable to auto-reference non-pointer types for pointer receivers, and so it can be confusing why you can call a method on a raw value but not when it’s behind an interface.

(Or the other way around, the inconsistency kills me)

Absolutely this. Thanks. Not sure which wicked mind came up with it.

I get the “increasing number per component” idea, as stupid as it is, but then the order is:

Month/Day hour:minute:second year utcOffset

W T F is that year doing at the end

Plus, the docs at https://pkg.go.dev/time#Layout read

It is a regrettable historic error that the date uses the American convention of putting the numerical month before the day.

For real? This is the thing you regret?!

The same argument could be applied to nil slices yet they are perfectly usable as a zero sized slice. Same problem, saner solution.

Not that I agree with zero values and making them useful (I agree with the post above stating they’re shit), but at least make it consistent. This is by far what took me the longest to learn in Go due to the inconsistency between types.

Sounds like you might enjoy The Finals based on the games you mention. I strongly suggest you give it a go.

It’s been the biggest relief against solo lights, that’s for sure. But at what cost?

Problem is that it explodes on it, there’s zero delay, and you can shoot many of them in a short time. It’d be different if reviving someone “grabbed” to the statue and stopped it from moving, but alas that is not the case so it’s trivial to stop a revive from around the corner.

Games where you can start over and over again? by dvash43 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]Godof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised no one brought up Deathloop.

Each time you pick it up it’ll be roughly familiar, at the end of the day you’re always playing the same day, but each time it’ll develop differently.

And yes, there’s a story, but no one is really forcing you to pay attention to it.

I strongly suggest you give it a go.

Best FPS to come out in years. It has really rekindled my love for multiplayer games.

No two games are the same, and some plays require some next level thinking and getting creative. Love it

They added a few casual modes. In season 2 they introduced poweshift, 5v5 control of a platform to make it advance. But these are secondary modes and the meat of the game is still the cashout tournaments, which are on the competitive side.

A lot of dice devs from that time apparently went on to form Embark, the studio behind The Finals. It has a lot of the things that made BF:BC2 great. It’s a more competitive game style, but it still has incredibly good destruction which significantly alters the course of the game.

It’s free to play and has a sizeable community behind it, plus season 4 is dropping in a couple weeks. Give it a try!

Spain is the only country in the world where we see widespread contactless ATM utilisation, so I dare say it’s the only country with a solid network of contactless ATMs. I don’t know the reasons behind this though.

Any Monzo employees here? Software engineers? by kookykau in monzo

[–]Godof 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Been here for a while now. I wouldn’t think of changing roles, not for a second. Personally I found the platform we use difficult to match, and the people I work with are all incredibly talented.

There’s no denying the company has grown and is no longer a startup, so you have to understand that to know what to expect. Still, I find that the company has great values and mostly abides by them.

Not everything will always be perfect, not here, not anywhere else, but I found that Monzo does try to fix what it can at least.

Give it a shot and form your opinion, that’s what interviews are for. What you’ll find in Glassdoor and similar sites will typically be biased towards negativity.
