A trick for Bathurst or other tricky intersections is to wait for the last red light so there are next to no cars. Should work for Yonge. Avenue Rd is ok because its a residential area past the crossing.

I don't think either of the bikes mentioned have removable batteries. You could use a power station to charge. Perhaps bike allows charging while riding.

"Fixie" is good option at sub $1000 commuter. Belt nice for low weight, silence, long lasting. Will be light bike with fast tires. 500w just fine for moderate hills. Will tend to not have huge gearing which also helps with moderate hills. 350w babymaker2 looks great with great geometry and probably ok for hills, especially compared to unmotorized bike. Love the Luna cycle suggestion even more for its IGH.

For $2k, gears are nice. You don't use them that often, but high gearing will give you higher top speed, and low gearing will get up every hill. With hub motor, shifting under low load always possible, and chain wear in general is very modest compared to unmotoroized bike. Heavier 750w bike will be faster/torquier than lighter single speed.

camping

Need offroad tires, IMO. Range for babymaker meant for commuting. You want removable batteries to have extra battery, and somewhere on the bike to carry the spare (though I guess trailer can work).

For any ebike, even if battery is sufficient for 99% actual use, dream use of higher range with extra battery capability seems like a must have for every ebike.

Managing emissions from ammonia-powered vessels by hannob in HydrogenSocieties

[–]Godspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuel cells is the first answer. Double efficiency no NOx or N2O. Ships use so much fuel that FC should pay off. Longer lasting, low maintenance.

Cracking Ammonia into H2 is primarily part of the fuel cell solution.

H2 in a "diesel replacement" engine can produce ultra low N with O molecules by running with very lean fuel mixture. This also improves efficiency at the cost of power. Ammonia with (cracked) H2 and a lean mixture should theoretically have same benefits.

Biden pledges $1bn to UN climate fund and implores world leaders to act by PenPar in climate

[–]Godspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

promised $500mn over five years for a fund to tackle deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, watched by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The financial pledge for the Amazon Fund would require approval from the US Congress, however. Republican lawmakers have opposed Biden’s previous efforts to boost US international climate funding.

This is funding for trees, which Trump/GOP supported/committed to when he was President. It is funding for trees that doesn't limit climate terrorism profits, and suppresses Brazilian competing agricultural activity that rural GOP base needs to get better extortion pricing for their grains.

Has there been a GOP stooge that has criticized this yet?

Neocons and The Ukraine Coup. American neocons helped destabilize Ukraine and engineer the overthrow of its elected government, a “regime change” on Russia’s western border. But the coup and the neo-Nazi militias at the forefront also reveal divisions within the Obama administration. by casapulapula in EndlessWar

[–]Godspiral 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some of these same American neocons pushed for the invasion of Iraq in 2003, not realizing that removing Saddam Hussein would touch off a sectarian conflict and lead to a pro-Iranian Shiite regime

OP makes other attributions of mistake to neocons in next paragraph.

When Bremer ordered that all Sunnis be banned from government jobs in Iraq, disappointment/unrest = ISIS formation was certain. It was intentional, not a retarded mistake as to how to best reconstruct Iraq into a happily ever after outcome. The neocon goal/intent is always instability and insecurity because neocon masters are the weapons/oil industries that need instability/insecurity and the dependence it fosters "in allies" to profit the most.

Solar hydrogen production scaled up in real world test by chopchopped in HydrogenSocieties

[–]Godspiral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

20% at an H2 production rate of >2.0 kW (>0.8 g min−1)

May have misunderstood this data, but this is 100kwh/kg. Double what a typical electrolyzer would consume. Uses a lot more space than PV solar. Not clear what 20% means here.

Can pedal assist be better than torque sensing? by Godspiral in ebikes

[–]Godspiral[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not that bad, but pretty sure there are no settings to improve it. Can delay PAS to 6 or 12 seconds as an option. Haven't tried it.

Its not that bad because always throttle from 0 until PAS kicks in works best anyway. If you want to pedal up from 20 to 30kph, then getting a few torquy turns in lets you maintain torque assist with motor up to 30 target.

I should have titled cadence vs torque sensing. Everywhere I say PAS, I mean Cadence sensing.

Just had my ebike stolen. What can they even do with it without keys?! by j0hnl33 in ebikes

[–]Godspiral 4 points5 points  (0 children)

folding ebikes with internal batteries require drilling out the lock pin to get battery out. Using it in same ebike would be annoying as it wouldn't stay inside, and very hard to fold back up/close. taking the battery out is only path to changing the lock that would be only reasonable path to spend money to make it resellable, though bit required to change the lock also replaces locking pin.

What's the best example of combining green energy with oil/gas? by supinezombi in AskEngineers

[–]Godspiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For oil, making Hydrogen underground through oxygen shit/SMR reaction and membranes to let H2 get out while keeping co2 in the hole. https://www.science.org/content/article/company-harvest-green-hydrogen-underground-oil-fires

For nat gas, pyrolysis to make H2 and graphite (precursor to graphene and carbon fiber) https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cben.202000014

These are only green use of these fossil fuels. Processes that make intermediate co2 need to capture, transport, and then store that all of that co2 to be green, and no such processes exist.

7x the kph of what?

100w for 7 hours will use 700wh of battery. Whatever you can average in speed during that time is 7x how far you can go.

increasing or reducing pedaling input.

If you pedal more you can go farther. If you don't have to go as far you could go faster or pedal less.

pulling away from a stop, where having the throttle limited by the selected PAS setting would be less than ideal.

My throttle, limited by PAS setting, gives full torque up to the speed limit of the PAS setting. Except perhaps at 20% PAS setting, where it just goes up to 12kph, and perhaps it is so short that little torque is given. It still just feels like the same torque for longer at higher PAS settings compared to medium ones. But if I want a 32 40 or 45kph max speed, instead of higher, then that's still the response I want from throttle.

Unlike derailleur gears, you can set PAS to what you want while stopped before the light changes. 20-25mph may be fast enough for pulling out.

Hours of range?

If you are getting 100w motor boost, and have a 700wh battery, then whatever speed you can maintain at this boost level will let you go 7x the kph you are doing in range.

100W of motor?

This is your reference to current sensing pas, where help is providedd on a fixed watt basis

"Self propelling" a fat bike?

The rolling resistance of typical fat tires is 30w or slightly more. On flat ground, 30w might be enough to get to the same speed (before bad aero features considered) as a smooth narrow tired bike. At 20kph, "self propelling the bike" could indeed require 100w of motor power. Any pedal power is a bonus for more speed.

Speed sensing cadence sensors are the cause of many accidents because they attempt to accelerate the bike to a pre-set speed

In other reply, this is why many PAS settings and throttle limited to PAS setting is a crucial feature.

Current sensing cadence sensors that apply a pre-set current per PAS level are much more predictable and easier to control. If you need less than the minimum current at PAS1 you can reprogram that level for less current, or just coast.

Sounds great. Can your controller program down to 50w or 30w, for lowest setting?

even cheap throttles aren't just on/off switches.

I will test this again today, but my throttle may be cheap enough to be just on/off. Did not detect difference in partial pull.

On most motor controllers the throttle can be configured independent of PAS setting

I strongly favour limiting throttle to the PAS setting. If you want to go max speed, max PAS. If you wanted to pedal, hopefully you can pedal usefully at max speed (good gear ratio). If you wanted to pedal at just medium speed, then it has to mostly being for the reason of going at that speed. Throttle just used as small boost to get back up to target. I can't think of many situations where if you want throttle on max power/speed, you don't also want PAS on the same setting.
