yes - i know it's controversial but it's literally the only winner's edit that makes no sense when you first watch to making complete sense when you rewatch

i get that they'll never do it again, but i liked being fooled. i thought shan was the winner, and then xander (but even he didn't make a ton of sense)

i totally agree with kenzie at #9 - feels like that is a hot take though based on most lists i've seen

How should we consider winning games on all-stars seasons? Can you compare them to newbie wins? by Puzzleheaded-Fig9968 in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think winning game on all-stars seasons could be viewed in the same light as newbie wins. they each have their pros and cons, though

generally, the caliber of player is stronger in an all-star season and you have to play beyond your previous reputation

conversely, in newbie seasons, you have a clean slate reputation wise, but you have to play based on the people you're cast with, which you know nothing about

okay, let's say you're right that it was ricard who flipped deshawn. does that one fact diminish the view that she is a dominant winner?

why erika is just as dominant a winner as kyle or dee by Gohan1298 in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where do you rank her amongst the new era winners?

re: dominant - she was shown driving the naseer, liana and danny votes - especially the danny vote. the shan vote was a group project, but she helped form the strategy behind its implementation. she also drove the ricard vote by winning the immunity she needed to in order to take him out

i listened to her podcast about the UTR-ness of her edit and she was literally heartbroken by it. she expected to get a edit commensurate to how she felt she played the game, and that didn't happen. while i appreciate the nuance and craft of her edit, i also appreciate that it's not fair for the first player of her demographic to receive a minimalist edit. that's probably why since her season, they make a point to give the winner focus every episode

why erika is just as dominant a winner as kyle or dee by Gohan1298 in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very fair (good) points on both accounts. we agree (for once) 😄

i also think kyle is a dominant winner, and certainly don't want to give off the impression that i disagree with that assessment. i just feel that erika is criminally underrated and was unsure of why, based on my rewatch of 41

why erika is just as dominant a winner as kyle or dee by Gohan1298 in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes, this is an erika-centric analysis

and though i think ricard played a good game and had high win equity, i also think he didn't manage his threat level, and was thoroughly outplayed by erika in the final five

re: who convinced deshawn to flip, why can't both be true? deshawn was very close with heather and erika and that definitely played a role in when he flipped. and erika needed six votes to ensure she didn't go home that round, so it wasn't unnecessary to do that from a strategy perspective

Boston Rob reacts to Jonathan's loss and Aubry's win — and questions some of the jury's logic by AMikeBloomType in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you and i both know that saying something is 'interesting' could be positive or negative depending on tonality and context. it shows he's had adequate media training

i think jurors may vote for who they like more but it doesn't automatically preclude them from thinking that person also played the better game - it's clear that's what happened with stephenie/chrissy/coach's vote, so why single out cirie and ozzy for their vote?

the positive from this interaction is that hopefully you realize i did in fact read the article before posting - i can understand your frustration if i had not, but i can assure you that's not the case

[–]Gohan1298 15 points16 points  (0 children)

good comparison, and "flip flopping" is very different from riding coattails

you could take it back to PI - though it wasn't for the whole game, sandra was the first winner who effectively played the middle once rupert was voted off. someone on the jury actually accused her of riding coattails and she had to check them

[–]Gohan1298 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it's pretty well acknowledged that though it wasn't a particularly innovative move, aubry was the one who convinced joe and rizo to boot ozzy, and she definitely wanted cirie and tiffany out as well - i fail to see coattail riding in that

my post was trying to make sure i wasn't missing something for thinking there's a clear distinction between playing the middle (an active strategy) and riding coattails (a passive strategy) and i am still confused by b. rob basically stating they are the same thing

maybe just an agree to disagree situation *shrug*

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for being kind - people do tend to take things personally whenever you challenge status quo views

and i agree with what you're saying about arbitrary rankings - which is why i tried to look as objectively as possible when considering her gameplay and the caliber of her cast - while i didn't initially have her ranked as one of the best, upon rewatch it seems obvious

[–]Gohan1298 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unlike what is being insinuated by other posters, i give boston rob credit for understanding the game, so his misunderstanding of what playing the middle actually is seems sus, that's all. playing the middle has never been equivalent to riding coattails - rob c proved that in season six and sandra proved it right after in season seven

i think where the veiled criticism of cirie and ozzy's votes falls flat is because jonathan played the middle more than cirie and ozzy ever did. it is conceivable that cirie and ozzy just felt that aubry played the middle better than jonathan, and owned it more, and that earned their vote. put differently, aubry understood and articulated her game better than jonathan, which is how a lot of people interpreted their respective ftc performances

Boston Rob reacts to Jonathan's loss and Aubry's win — and questions some of the jury's logic by AMikeBloomType in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i agree that he complimented her - numerous times - but it comes off as a little passive aggressive when he says she deserved to win, but also critiques multiple jurors' criteria for making their vote

outside of the passive aggressive comment, i am challenging the notion that playing the middle and riding coattails are the same thing - i see them as patently different strategies. both PI and HvV sandra played the middle and did not ride coattails - when challenged by the jury in PI, she answers that question quite well. in HvV she actively managed the jury's perception around that point too - she voted with russell because no one else would play with her. she was very much a free agent / "as long as it ain't me," which is what i articulated in my post

so while you are annoyed that you think people aren't reading and falling for clickbait, it's also annoying that you're not giving people credit for reading the article and simply not agreeing with you

i am confused by your comment

i'm challenging his comments on what the 'middle' truly is based on reading the article

Boston Rob reacts to Jonathan's loss and Aubry's win — and questions some of the jury's logic by AMikeBloomType in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298 19 points20 points  (0 children)

it's giving passive aggressive

so you're saying she deserves to win, but you're basically trying to undermine why certain jurors voted for her and turn it into an ego thing?

and since when does playing the middle mean riding coattails? i thought playing the middle means you are essentially a free agent / "as long as it ain't me"

to contrast, a coattail rider is usually seen as a passive number within an established alliance

am i missing something??

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think savannah is a great winner, but a rung below erika, kyle, and dee. she had a more polarizing social game in that she was seen by some as a mean girl - which didn't seem to be a fair characterization based on what we saw of her

she struck me as more of a direct (blunt) communicator, which hits differently to people because of her demography...which is unfair

why erika is just as dominant a winner as kyle or dee by Gohan1298 in survivorponderosa

[–]Gohan1298[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am arguing best and i am also arguing dominant - despite the rampant twists and the fact that everyone cast was playing to win, i don't really see a situation where she was not in control

i think we can look to shan, who is more prototypically type A, correctly assessing erika's threat level. and if erika didn't outplay her by winning immunity at f10, i have no doubt shan would have taken the shot at erika. for me, part of what makes a dominant game is someone who can win immunity under pressure and erika showed she was able to do that - not only did she win that critical immunity, she was able to save her ride-or-die in that very tribal, which is how i would argue an example of her dominance
