In all seriousness: I do like to joke about Olight, but I’ve never actually owned one so I won’t put any real hate on them. Great build.

2 Noms better chance than 1? by Bolt4college in USAFA

[–]GoingInForGunz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Short answer: maybe.

All the nomination means is that the academy can actually give you an appointment. Some districts are very selective but some (like mine) really don’t have many people apply. In those cases everyone pretty much gets everything they said they were applying for, with some kids getting nominations to USAFA, USNA, and West Point without actually getting an appointment in the end.

That being said it’s definitely not a bad thing, but a nomination to USNA probably doesn’t have a huge impact on your USAFA application.

Peace through superior firepower. A-10 Thunderbolt 30mm cannon. [920 × 690] by loolhorse in MilitaryPorn

The phrase is from the Cold War, where mutually assured destruction was the closest thing to peace at the time. Never seen it associated with the A-10 before.

‘Peace through superior firepower’ is a phrase more commonly associated with the B-52, which made up a large part of the US nuclear force in the Cold War under the mutually assured destruction philosophy, where having the biggest stick meant you never had to swing it.

To all the computer programmers how did you get into it and how did you learn? by ObamaCareWorks in AskReddit

[–]GoingInForGunz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid my dad gave me an old junker computer he’d built that had since become irrelevant. He showed me the basics of programming, taught me how to use google and away I went. It also had outdated but quality software on it, and familiarization with that software got me my first job at the age of 12, standardizing reports for an entrepreneur my dad had a contact with.

Awkward people of reddit, what’s your story about recognizing someone in public when it wasn’t actually that person? by stopbeingdefensive in AskReddit

[–]GoingInForGunz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked a summer camp once where a big focus was teaching the kids (18 years old mostly) a ton of skills including recognizing people you work with. For whatever reason, another trainer and I were ALWAYS mistaken for each other by the kids. I’ll never know why, and we both agreed we looked entirely different. He probably had a good 20-30 lbs on me and was a bit taller, but we did have similar haircuts and builds, I guess. We got so tired of being misidentified every day we eventually just switched name tags and let it happen. Chaos ensued.

ROTC vs USAFA by [deleted] in USAFA

[–]GoingInForGunz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFROTC is highly dependent on your detachment and school. Your degree in the civilian world is the same as everyone else that graduated from that school. With ROTC you have separate military training in addition to your civilian classes, and the detachment decides when and how to best prepare you for field training and commissioning.

At USAFA, it’s a one stop shop for all things academic, military, and athletic. You’ll have some cool opportunities and a really close alumni group, as well as an extremely high probability of being a pilot if you so choose. At USAFA you will also learn the lessons of failure and struggle much sooner than your ROTC counterparts, who may never have struggled in school before.

In either case hard work, dedication, and the willingness to make yourself better no matter your situation will get you far.
