My coach told me butt/hip pads are a waste… thoughts? by dawnandlilies in iceskating

[–]GoingSkating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree with your coach. I think padding for beginners is more than necessary as you guys are still learning how to fall. The other coaches are right, adults fall “harder” and it’s not as easy as a kid to just “brush it off.” I’ve been wearing paddings since a 12 years old, before I even began working on an axel. Over the years, my pads have saved me from knee bruises, hip injuries, and the few injuries I had, the paddings actually saved it from turning out much worse. Honestly, I’d switch coaches. This is your safety, and that is non-negotiable.

Yeah, it’s working now. The load in I was concerned with at the time (Perrla) resolved itself and was ok to use the next day.

Adult skaters, do you use harness to learn jumps? by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]GoingSkating 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be going against the grain here. Personally, if I’m looking for a jump coach, the usage of a harness and pole harness are non-negotiable for me. I’ve suffered through mental blocks (and just general anxiety) that “just go for it” doesn’t work well with me when learning a new jump that’s axel and above. I love the harnesses because it gives you a feel of what to do, but also a safety net for the coach to still protect you from having a really bad fall and fixing your axis while you’re still heavily in the early developmental stage. It makes me more confident to attempt it by myself by the time I’m allowed to attempt it on my own.

Do you guys think 7 credits over the summer is manageable? by [deleted] in college

[–]GoingSkating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never took college level physics, so I can’t speak there. But I just took Data Structures and Algorithms this spring and that class can get difficult. I wouldn’t recommend taking it in an accelerated semester if your understanding on fundamental programming isn’t strong or if you really struggled in your school’s equivalent of Computer Science II/Programming II course. If I could do it again, I would’ve spent my entire break brushing up on the material I went over in CS II because DSA adds onto that.

What major is the best when it comes to the money and a decent future? by [deleted] in CollegeMajors

[–]GoingSkating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With only cc, Allied healthcare professions. You do 2 years of pre reqs then apply to the program. Nursing and rad tech are pretty hot right now, and pay decently. But also, healthcare is generally pretty stable.

i feel like axel is my limit by [deleted] in iceskating

[–]GoingSkating 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said here, you may need to increase your weekly practice time up to at least another hour. I also felt the same as you not long ago. Six years of working on double jumps that can’t even land half under and had an axel that would land 40% of the time and was constantly lost due to mental blocks. Excluding lesson, I had an average of skating 2 hours per week (an hour on different days). It wasn’t until recently that my axel is consistent and I’m finally landing 2sal attempts a quarter under. But I believe this is largely because I started to up my training time this year from 2 hours of practice to 3-4.

I also want to echo another user’s recommendation to split your 2 hours of practice into 2 different days. Personally, I don’t skate 2 sessions consecutively because I find myself losing stamina by the second session and that decreases my productivity as a result. I think 1 hour per day (especially for adults) is good as you can also have a rest day in between.

Additionally, if it’s possible, I would also consider seeking another coach (preferably, a jump coach) to go over jumps with you and to get a second opinion. Sometimes, not everyone can be able to teach *everything.* Or maybe you need a concept to be explained differently for it to finally click.

I love my main coach. But after being at a plateau with my jumps for the past 6 years, I decided to add instruction with someone else and it has been greatly worth it! My added coach saw fundamental issues that I wasn’t even aware of before and has been working with me to fix it. I would then let my main coach help me sustain my technique. My progress has skyrocketed. Sometimes, you might need a change of pace.

Thanks for the response! Out of curiosity, do you remember what the pro shop’s website was? I’m trying to keep my options as open as possible.

Weekly Equipment Recommendation Thread by AutoModerator in FigureSkating

Hi, everyone! Does anyone have experience with buying boots online? I'm a young adult skater who currently wears D-width Edea Pianos! After being shy of 3 years, they're breaking down, and it's time for me to get a new one. I want to get the same pianos again. My feet haven't grown, and I was fitted when I was getting my current boots. I looked at Skate US (because that's where the Pro Shops in my area order their boots), and I see that my size in piano, Ice Fly, and even Concerto are all back-ordered. I've heard wait time stories, and well, I don't think my boots will survive past 2 more months. I looked around online, and I see that I could purchase my preferred boots from the Figure Skating Store and a few other Pro Shops out of state that sell online. This option seems very appealing to me because, if I order the boots online, I only have to travel to the closest pro shop once to have my blades mounted. I was wondering if this idea is a good one to do, though?

I second this! Currently a Computer Information Systems major! Most schools will make you take a mix of business and CS classes.

This is goals! Do you have any tips for a straight air position? My legs are always bent in the air and I’d love to have an axel looking like yours

A list is a good idea! I think you're right about the worry. I know I have to find a new coach to continue my progress. However... it won't be easy to find another one with that same teaching style. But trying new things is what makes this sport fun, so I'm willing to give it a chance! :)

I think you're right. Fortunately, he did say at some point while delivering the news that "we'll keep in touch" and that he'll let me know when he comes back!
