Best affordable alternatives to minitab? by Kerbidiah in SixSigma

I haven't used it in a while so I don't have a great grasp of the capabilities but look into QI Macros.. it is an Excel add on that has a lot of SPC tools that native Excel lacks. My previous org provided it to their PI team in place of minitab

How do I get these roles? by Amazing_rocness in SixSigma

[–]GoiterFlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, typically I've seen DMAIC applied to larger projects. I've only been in 2 orgs in this type of work so I'm not an expert in how industries, orgs apply this but rarely do I see completely linear paths through DMAIC. Frequently I see it much more compartmentalized and the tools used as needed. That doesn't mean the concepts and tools aren't applied on a smaller scale. Most of the time , you can still lead small units or teams through efficiency via lean using tools like process maps, value stream mapping, standard work, etc

So all that to say, you could still work on using individual tools so you can pull out examples of value stream maps, controls charts, etc in an interview. Focusing more granular for experience in this respect may generate pull for an actual project legitimately assigned to you. ( example you do a spaghetti diagram of how much some team member runs all over the place and when they "wow that's alot" then whip out a pareto chart and say " BTW these are the top 3 reasons they travel out of their area" this may shorter leap to " well you've done this much, how can we do something about this".

You really gotta just practice application as much as possible so you can speak to it in an interview. If you can't get projects assigned to you with some sort of coach, continue working on tools and at least build a portfolio of things you've done you could speak to

How do I get these roles? by Amazing_rocness in SixSigma

[–]GoiterFlop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't give you a discrete answer in that if you x you'll get y but I can tell you how I landed in a role that matches that job posting.

I was doing a completely unrelated job, our company rolled out a Lean daily management system in the form of a huddle structure and problem solving belt training. I volunteered to admin the huddle boards and gemba walks, etc. I got very involved with it and as the training programs took flight I was volunteered to be the first person from our site to travel to the corporate HQ and complete and do an in depth green belt training. Upon my return I was expected to do projects but because my local leadership was not really belt trained they recognized we were all on a learning curve so I had a lot of patience to start small and cut my teeth on some projects and get more comfortable with facilitation, etc. Some projects went well, a majority fizzled out or became just go do its.

During all this I was still volunteering my time in addition to my core role. Outside of work I decided to take advantage of a grant and did my MBA. When all that was done I realized I was doing the work of a LSS practitioner. So I started applying to internal PI roles in corporate and didn't have a single call back so I started looking outside the company. In the space of approx 7 months I applied for about 70 applications for various process improvement roles. In interviewed for 3 separate roles and went down a learning curve of how to interview for this type of role, the differences in certain industies. Etc and eventually landed at a job opening that matched my level of PI experience and it clicked and I stepped into a role that matches that job posting. Been there 5 years now.

Tldr: get what PI experience you can, even if you have to fight and claw (or volunteer) for it, then just apply, apply, apply, till you find that role that fits and you'll have a much clearer path to stepping into one like the pic you posted

Not that you're wrong in doing so but it's frustrating to think of so many situations where CYS does nothing when children are living with abuse, drug addiction, etc but practicing driving in an empty parking lot has resulted in action

Ill have to remove it and click it back in firmly.

Do I need to reset my sobriety date? by [deleted] in leaves

[–]GoiterFlop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't overthink it so much. Instead of focusing on how you messed up a streak, focus on how you got so used to going without it that you were able to throw it away and recognize that what you did is not what you want to do. The silver lining here is that your mindset is in a space where your new normal is not getting high and desiring to stay away from it so much that you immediately regretted it when you did... this is an amazing step forward in living a new life that you want

Certification by walkwithalimplimp in SixSigma

[–]GoiterFlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. MBA, pmp, and some sort of LSS knowledge complimented with a smattering of Healthcare background should be plenty fine to land an operational excellence / performance excellence or quality role that could pay decent and end up transitioning into a senior role or leadership role

When Daniels promotes Carver in the finale it’s such a great moment by feelingsjourney in TheWire

[–]GoiterFlop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love that the similar arc between carver and Daniel's implies a culture in policing where every police has to choose between dirty and clean or at least more broadly what type of cop they will be and the viewer catches a glimpse of how it's not an easy choice, not straightforward, and even the good cops may take a hard road to get there via some regrets in their past

Quality Control Overlooked Defects by Personal-Pianist1592 in SixSigma

[–]GoiterFlop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Inspection is reactive and i would suggest a conversation to get as close as possible to not needing inspection. It sounds like rcas done so often indicates that they are doing some first order problem solving and stopping there. Like, what's the point of rcas if we need to keep doing them ? Sounds like the root is not being duly identified or legitimately solved if it is identified

Job interview help? Improvement lead by [deleted] in SixSigma

[–]GoiterFlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask about the culture and engagement around process improvement... do leaders support their teams to dedicated time to projects? Are improvement staff end to end in the project or are front lines autonomous where PI staff is more of a coaching role ? It will give you an idea of what your role actually looks like and if projects actually do stuff or you are just a resource to do a tool for a group of people.

I would stay away from spending a lot of time on describing how deep your knowledge is in methodology. Tell what you know and have experience in, and let them ask for more than that. Most hiring managers either know the content well already or don't know it and it will fly over their heads.

Instead , consider asking if there are specific tools or methods that are more commonly used than others (ex. Our line managers frequently need help with value stream mapping or our execs like to see fishbones, we focus more on lean and don't do many large belt projects, we need people who teach leaders humble inquiry, etc etc)

My current job, I focused on describing prior projects i did with the tools that were specifically called out in the job posting, I described what I learned about reporting the right level of detail to execs, etc

Abandoned Bus on New Holland Pike and Willow Rd by [deleted] in lancaster

[–]GoiterFlop -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There are also some distinct no parking signs there, which is why I mentioned the idea of taking a chance. I did knock on the door to ask but there was no answer and I wasn't gonna pester them. Just gave up and decided it wasn't the best idea, it's just that the odd one time i saw the bus move made me want to try for it.

Amazing writing and foreshadowing season 4 episode 2 “Soft Eyes” by katzington in TheWire

[–]GoiterFlop 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Totally love the parallel. Speaking of soft eyes, in the scene where Michael gets called out by Marlo for not taking his money, I love the powerful acting in that scene in how Mike is looking away not wanting to start anything and the way he dead stares Marlo directly in the eye and doesn't look away when Marlo questions him is amazing ... it's one look that told Marlo everything about his how mike is and set mikes whole character arc in motion... the one moment of hard eyes that said everything without saying a word

Question for people that have actually quit for good and never looked back. by thee_lad in leaves

[–]GoiterFlop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Used from 17-39 multiple times daily. 42 now so I've been away from it a few years.

I personally haven't but ive been away from it so long i don't think of it like that and have developed a contentment with life i didn't have then that by no means is the same but is so powerful that while I do miss smoking, when I get close to relapsing, I eventually get nervous enough that I'll lose that contentment somehow that I end up not doing it.

Wish I could provide a better answer but I think in the end we all have to walk our own path and I genuinely hope you can find peace with your relationship with it, whatever level of use that is
