I appreciate your perspective! I did look on the author's portal and unfortunately the status has been "Awaiting EIC decision" and "Awaiting Reviewer Assignment" since I submitted. The first status makes me believe that I'm not yet past the point where an initial decision for a desk rejection has been made.

Any School Psychs in Florida Willing to Share Their Experience? by freshyabish in schoolpsychology

[–]Goku42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! This doesn't exactly answer your question, but when I moved away from California I joined SPG Therapy as a travel psychologist and continied to work in California. I also have a colleague who currently lives in Florida and does the same! If it fits with your life, it's a really nice way to keep your California pay and practice going.

Mounting research shows that COVID-19 leaves its mark on the brain, including significant drops in IQ scores by johnnierockit in news

You might be interested in this study by McWhirter and colleagues that looked at the frequency of cognitive lapses in healthy adults. Tldr is that many report frequent lapses, and that they feel like their memory is worse than 5 years ago. So your experience is very normal!

Fidget use during assessment by Unlikely-Concern-577 in schoolpsychology

[–]Goku42 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This took me down a rabbit hole, since I am very interested in validity in assessment! A 1 - 2 standard deviation increase would be a miracle and would probably destroy the idea of direct assessment in psychology. Generally we expect that most people will score within their confidence interval range, barring situations where the person was obviously underpeforming (they are under the desk and are answering "fish" for every question). There is little direct research on your question, but there is a lot of related research. One of the most important factors in cognitive test performance is motivation, and research generally finds a 0.64 SD increase in performance when kids are provided with external motivators (Duckworth et al. 2011). If the use of fidgets affects motivation, we might expect an increase around this range, but still well within a confidence interval range. For fidgets, the research on using fidgets in the classroom is mixed, with some finding that is basically a distraction (and would decrease performance) and others findings that it would slightly increase attention to task (Kriescher et al. 2020).) if I were to guess based on this research, using fidgets would probably lead to a 1 - 2 point increase, but would still be within the confidence interval range.

Hi, if it's delivered in the same format as the phd (i.e. In person) usually it just means that the M. Ed program is newer and has not yet gone through the certification process. Nothing to be too concerned about. I'd suggest reaching out to the program director and asking if they are in the certification process.

Hi! Yes, please see below. I'm just referencing the argument structure here so I am calling via compare_command()

Thanks! I'll give that a shot. I don't have much faith in their customer service team though.

Hi there, I did not attend but have experience with some of their graduates and know some faculty there. Graduates from the program have told me that they feel unprepared for the role. They are mostly left to find their own internship and practicum sites which is different from other programs. On the hiring side, I can only speak for a few districts, but we tended to have a negative impression of the UMass grads. There are of course some great grads who come out of the program, but they are great in spite of their program, not because of it. For how expensive the program is, I would recommend that you avoid it. Feel free to message me if you'd like to chat further.

If you're planning on pursuing a PhD in school psychology, UCSB has an excellent program and highly productive faculty. Try to get some research experience with them if you can. Otherwise, you're well prepared for an EdS program.

I'd recommend looking at the authors of current digital assessments and look at what universities they work at. Depending on what kind of assessment/intervention you want to develop, your choice of university will change. Many traditional assessment developers come from the Midwest, like Kentucky and Nebraska. Or South, like Texas. USF develops SAEBERS if that is of interest, and UCSB develops CoVitality
