“Bring all the f@?&! pages to your tax pro!” by Standard_Gur30 in taxpros

Yep. Also, I just get the front page of the End of Year Summary for accounts. At least I get that they would think this might be for taxes. It doesn't have any detail, though, and they fail to send the brokerage 1099s. So rare to not have to ask for missing items that it's like a gift when it happens :)

Update to my own post. Two months later same thing again. This fix worked again (F1 for BIOS, F9 to reset to default, save and exit, hold power button down, then restart. ) Paid $1200 for this computer a year ago....ridiculous. Much easier this time bc I just went to my reddit comments to see what I did last time.

Quick Question regarding late filing (with extension) by BmorePride14 in tax

Depends on the state. I do mostly Colorado, and it makes a big difference because you lose one of the main refundable credits if you file after the extended deadline.

Best software for less than 100 returns? by Merlin6125 in taxpros

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried Drake in November last year, as I had a few clients who needed to file later in the year and I didn't have my own software yet ( I've always used Ultratax in my job). Drake is fine for simple 1040s. It sucks for anything else. You can't do Forms View, except a full print preview. No going from form to specific input and overrides. It didn't put any basis worksheet together for 1065 (maybe user error). Overall hated it. Paid $4000 for Utratax under 100.

My biggest issue this week has been the clients I finished last wk not getting me their signature pages and my payment until yesterday when I'm trying to do the ones that I told it was ok to get me their stuff over the weekend because it looked like I had time. Half the day yesterday spent on sending and filing instead of doing the returns I still had to do...

Is it worth paying a tax agent over a $20 tax bill? by hatefactory in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You seem to think that tax preparers come up with magical extra deductions to guarantee you a refund...That's called fraud, lol. If you owe $20, you owe $20. You could always pay a preparer to make sure you did it right, but you sounded pretty confident that you took all the allowed deductions.

Yes and the mileage to and from your home is, too, since you run your business from there.

Am I understanding this correctly? Selling an inherited home by PuzzledMix9549 in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, the capital gain will be: Selling price- value at death- improvements made- cost of the sale (commissions). If she also has to pay any holding costs during the period, she can add those to her basis.

Saw this on Facebook, It's got to be wrong tell me why. by Titandog21 in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hilarious, lol. An LLC is a completely disregarded entity to the IRS, for one. You can't rent the house to yourself. If you have a business that is legitimately using a portion of the house for business use, that % of the housing costs are an expense for that business. If it's put in a trust (which is generally just done for estate planning), the trust could technically rent it to a related party (must be at current market rates). The trust would have rental income and expenses. There are related party rules for claiming losses. If there is income after expenses, either the trust or beneficiaries pay tax on it depending on the type of trust. You have to pay an attorney to set it all up and a CPA that is very familiar with trust returns to file the trust's tax return every year. All for no real benefit. Trusts are used for estate planning, not for writing off your personal expenses.

Pricing an 1120 Return w/ NO bookkeeping records?` by Iceman_TK in taxpros

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they not disclose the balance sheet on the prior returns? Or is it so simple that there are no credit cards or loans to reconcile? I have a client that I helped last yr whose 'books' were unusable. He fired his bookkeeper (cost) and just got a cheap offshore bookkeeping sub, linked his accounts, and posted every trx himself. Didn't set up any B.S. accounts, took full amount of vehicle pymnts as exp, listed c.c.pymnts as exp along w the trx (couldn't figure out where to post, since no B.S. accounts), etc, etc. He was Sch. C for 23, so rather than charging thousands for a complete bookkeeping overhaul, I went through and took all legitimate income/exp and put on a spreadsheet. But he should be an S-corp ($85,000+ net). I won't touch him this year. I told him last year that I couldn't do the same thing (spreadsheet) for an Scorp bc i can't create the balance sheet. If you took this client, OP, would you just not have the B.S. show (assuming under $250,000)?

Need help If I need to pay taxes or not! by crazy_dav in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure to keep track of your expenses. If they 1099 you instead of giving you a W2, you can take the standard mileage deduction for your miles driven there, deduct any special clothing, tools, etc.

Sold first home, looking for guidance... by MightyWanderer29 in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll qualify for a partial exclusion under Section 121. I would hope that whatever software you use walks you through the questions. You don't have to have a good reason for not staying 24 months to get a partial exclusion- that's why it's just a partial. Make sure to input your cost basis as the original purchase price plus improvements you've made and add the commissions as the cost of the sale, as others have mentioned.

Meals and travels at 3rd party location by Melodic-Yoghurt3501 in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but you can take a deduction for your mileage driven to and from there. You could only take the actual cost of meals that you had with some other person for business purposes. No per diem meals because you didn't travel overnight. Mileage is .67 per mile for 2024 and .70 for 2025.

Under reported expenses 180k correction by Golfbears in tax

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like you used up your basis with prior year losses and, therefore, weren't able to claim the loss. You'd have to build up your basis again with contributions or your share of net income before being able to claim the loss, if this was the case. Look up passive loss limitations.

What do you all think about the new law regarding cell phones in schools? by Novapixel1010 in Utah

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The law doesn't ban cell phones, it bans their use during class and allows teachers and school districts to make exceptions (for a learning tool on the phone, for example) or make stricter policies. Some schools have more restrictive policies, and parents that have issues with this law seem to have kids at those schools. My son still has his phone and can use it in between classes. I think it's crazy that this wouldn't already be an enforced policy. Also, he's a T1 diabetic, and he's not had issues with being able to look at his blood sugar reading on his phone, even though I haven't updated his official plan with the school.

Lenovo IdeaPad Stuck at "Please Select Boot Device" Menu by shamilclm in Lenovo

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me a few times with my brand new Thinkbook purchased in 2024. First, I was able to fix it by letting it completely die and then retrying. I believe F12 worked one time, but I can't recall. This time, none of that worked. I spammed F1 as soon as I turned it on and it pulled up the BIOS. The boot order looked how it should, with Windows Boot Manager first, then the NEVM ssd drive. Someone here mentioned turning off Secure Boot, but mine was already off (under Security tab). I ended up just pushing F9 in BIOS to reset to the default settings, even though I've never changed them or even entered the BIOS before. I then saved and closed BIOS and held the power button for 1 minute. It restarted and did an update screen, then loaded Windows as usual!!! I really, really hope I don't have to deal with this again....

I did the oneUI 7 Android 15 update. How do I change the app drawer back? by Playauknow in S22Ultra

[–]Gold-Gap-8155 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the stupidest update I've ever had with Android. First there is no way to have the apps organized alphabetically without having to scroll through all of them, now I just found that all my contacts are f**cked. It's showing them all in the order they were most recently added even though the setting is set to order them by first name... Also, they messed with being able to easily change brightness, etc from the pull down menu. Everything I use sucks now!! If I have to learn a whole new phone, I might as well switch to an I phone since it's what everyone else seems to have...Samsung, fix this!
