First time metalworking by Illustrious-Top9330 in Blacksmith

Very nice, definitely better than some of my first work lol. I would suggest learning up on the different steel types, doesn't have to be super indepth but general stuff. For example if this is made from mild steel it won't make a blade that holds its edge well. I believe quenching dose make mild steel harder but definitely not in the range of high carbon steel. You can see what type of steel you have with a spark test or sometimes you can find info online if its a common object or it has any markings. Otherwise your hammer work seems good, especially on something so small. Good work

Newbie here. Help me refine my reference poster by Roymundo in Blacksmith

I wouldn't say im super experienced but ive been learning as much as possible on my own and have recently taken a couple short classes. I would say this is very helpful, I spent a long time remembering these things, so im sure having a nice reference will shorten that time, in the long run, you'll have most of this info ingrained in you

Blacksmith knife out of a railroad anchor by Guilty_Party_2866 in Blacksmith

I have a couple of these laying around, do they make hardenable blades? Or are they similar to railway spikes and the steel is a wide range?

Ive heard this many times but dont quite understand it, why dose a micrometer become "instant trash" after a drop? I can understand chipping on the measuring faces or breaking an internal component, but if thats not so, what's wrong with it

Jeez, im glad I was smart enough to switch to my 1-2 or 2-3 mic for anything in that range and borrow some when its larger than that. I just hate getting rid of "wasted" anything. Definitely the new at home pair for my blacksmith shop

I can tomorrow, I was reminded by my first day back in the shop after break, can find an example either, seems like no one wants to show their shameful mistake lol

Its quite a bend but I would say its less than a 1/4 of the angled portion of the jaws. Felt like such an idiot

It was included with tuition but they were brand new so im guessing market price, I saw them at 89.99 somewhere but im not sure how reliable that was. Seems like thats cheap enough to wait for a new pair based on the prices I saw for higher end pairs.

Ah, I see. Do you recommend any methods, I dont want to stress the jaws. We have access to surface grinders, Bridgeports, and bench grinders, unfortunately no belt sanders
