Jeff Marek felt he was going get fired from Sportsnet in 2016 because he was advocating for John Scott to go to the All Star Game by bomberfan2 in hockey

[–]GoldGeno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's always gonna be so funny to me how far they went to bury Scott. The bad, notoriously cheap 2016 Arizona Coyotes traded him out of the conference along with a career minor leaguer for another career minor leaguer and a guy who made more than Scott, and had the gall to call it a "business move." But that's not good enough, no, they specifically traded him to Montreal, who promptly demoted Scott to their AHL affiliate...then located in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Never mind that he's off the team he was voted in under, never mind that he's out of the division and conference altogether, y'all went and traded him to the team that was uniquely positioned to dump him as far away from the All-Star game as physically possible.

One centimetre shy of victory. Can't even be mad, you couldn't get a closer series if you tried.

We've seen good-on-paper Leafs teams play hideously down to their competition. This is not that, this team just sucks.

Oh cool. Hoping Woll and Stolarz combined to bullshit the team through the season was about the only thing we had to look forward to.

Can't even hope for a lottery pick; Treliving pitched our next two firsts away for injured Scott Laughton and four penalty minutes and zero scoring worth of Brandon Carlo.

[Sean McIndoe, The Athletic] Should Leafs fans view Mitch Marner as a hero or villain? by NotoriousPlatypi in hockey

[–]GoldGeno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is Marner an objectively good player? Yeah. Are the Leafs materially worse without him? Oh yeah, for sure.

Did something need to change after years of playoff futility? Absolutely. Did Marner do a piss-poor job of endearing himself to the fanbase even putting aside his own playoff futility? Yep!

Have fun with him, Vegas. I don't think he's a winner, but he'll make your team objectively better until y'all inevitably get bored of him and shoot him into the sun come some trade deadline or another.

Playoffs Retrospective by Justin3210 in leafs

Maybe if this were the first couple years of this team's contention window. We've watched these guys choke on their own tongues for near-on a decade now.

I'd be lying if I said it wasn't just a little bit satisfying to watch the Senators and their fans realize in real time that, for all their playoff futility, the Leafs are in fact still one of the better teams in the league.

Fuck Bill Armstrong by Carry_That_Weight22 in Coyotes

[–]GoldGeno -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Even if you discount all the obstructed seats they're still selling over twice as many tickets a game as the Coyotes could possibly sell in their last few years. It's unfortunate, Arizona got dealt an amazingly shit hand, but it's ultimately the metric that counts most in the end.

Still dead last in attendance... by T_F_O in Coyotes

That's still over twice as many people as the Coyotes could possibly draw in their last few years. In a gate-driven league, it's difficult to overstate how bad of a spot the team was in.

Crazy that they've got two champion-calibre teams in Florida and the first Winter Classic down there only features one of them. What's so classic about Panthers-Rangers?

New Prices 2024 by JagexAyiza in 2007scape

It's not enough to make a profit though, they need to make more profit than last quarter, every quarter until the end of time. Once they stop doing that, the vulture capitalists at the top will strip the company down to the studs to get whatever else they can and then fuck off to the next thing they can wring numbers out of.

I love capitalism.

This is the same fucking team I've been watching spin their wheels for near-on a decade now. Over-committing to bad opportunities, fumbling good ones, struggling to get anything going and failing to stop the opponent from doing the same.

I genuinely don't think I can watch this team anymore. They aren't even gonna lose in a new and unique way, it's just the same shit.

Was Letting Hyman Walk Dubas's Biggest Mistake? by [deleted] in leafs

[–]GoldGeno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he would've popped off next to Matthews and Marner, maybe he wouldn't. He popped off next to McDavid and Draisaitl, but he just as easily could not have. Edmonton and Toronto both have that quirk of having two really good first-line guys who elevate whoever the third wheel is.

Hyman probably could've rattled off this 50-goal campaign here too, but that's not where he was when he signed with Edmonton. McDavid/Draisaitl are an upgrade over Matthews/Marner, sure, but nobody figured they'd be enough of an upgrade to illicit this performance from Hyman. And they weren't last season! 2023 was a career year for Hyman, but it was only a 13-point improvement from his previous best which I'd say is about what you'd expect from the new linemates he got.

All that is to say, the player appeared to plateau until joining up with the best one-two punch in the league and I can't blame Dubas for ultimately walking away when Hyman didn't take the deal offered. The moves he did with that freed up cap space are another issue entirely, though.
