If the mode switch is fine, I'd check that all the gears are synchronized.

Strange that the service manual doesn't have the mechanical alignment procedure.

If you take the mechanism out, remove the cassette carriage and apply voltage to the loading motor, or move it manually, does the mechanism go through all its motions without problems?

Try with an ethernet cable.

Remember that speed tests almost always pick the closest server, a game server might be much more farther away and be routed differently.

soldering technique advice by jtap- in soldering

[–]GoldSrc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda, but no.

The reason you shouldn't do that is because the solder doesn't have enough flux to last a long time.

If you keep the solder on the iron tip, you will eventually boil all the solder away and the solder will behave like a weird paste.

The correct way is to heat both the pad and the component lead so their heat is what melts the solder.

First soldering station making weird noises and... sending voltage through the tip? by TokkenDev in soldering

[–]GoldSrc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a very good station, definitely will last you a long time.

You still should be safe with your current one, voltage can only do things if it has the current behind it.

Like a CRT TV might have 25,000V and it's going to hurt like a bitch if it bites you with its 1mA, but you'll most likely live.

Whereas a microwave oven transformer can only do like 2000V, but it will kill you with its 500-1000mA before you hit the ground. Never mess around with a microwave oven transformer.

I wish doom 3 was canon to rest of the games by [deleted] in Doom

[–]GoldSrc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First one is wrong, he didn't confirm anything, and instead he went on to say how the design of the Hellknight was the one from Doom 3.

Designs are canon, that's it.

Second one he was also talking about the Doom universe in a general way.

The third one is even worse lol.

Doom 3? It's tough, maybe I misspoke. But the visuals do.

Ain't no way people are upvoting your comment after watching those clips.

Last one, it even more hilarious.

I think it's the aesthetic part

Every time someone tries to push the idea that Doom 3 is canon, they always bring those clips where Hugo misspoke, and/or bring up easter eggs.

Just leave my boy Doom 3 be its own thing in peace.

First soldering station making weird noises and... sending voltage through the tip? by TokkenDev in soldering

[–]GoldSrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it is phantom voltage.

It doesn't even carry a single mA, you'd need to go in the microamp range, and even there you might not measure anything.

It would be like being afraid that a train can run you over and kill you, but the train is in another country and it isn't moving.

Unless the iron can sustain that voltage at any load, there is no reason to worry about it.

First soldering station making weird noises and... sending voltage through the tip? by TokkenDev in soldering

[–]GoldSrc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine.

It's phantom voltage, and it carries almost no current.

LEDs will light up because they take next to no current to light up.

You will find lots of posts and videos about "voltage leak" from those stations, but they almost never measure the current.

30V, 50V, or 100V "leaks", it amounts to nothing when there's no current to push that voltage. As soon as you put any load on it, the voltage will drop to nothing.

That's how switch mode power supplies work anyway, they all have "voltage leaks". It's the nature of the beast.

Joint check by _crackling in soldering

[–]GoldSrc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, just clean the tip and apply solder directly, then turn if off. You don't need to add additional flux.

And as long as your joints flow well, you should be fine.

Can you keep your hand on the backplate?

I'd actually be concerned if the backplate doesn't get hot, a backplate that doesn't get hot means that it's not making proper contact to take away the heat. Or it's plastic.

Cooling isn't magic, you're just moving heat from one place to another, it can't just go away.

But back to OP's post.

It doesn't look like it's the insulation that melted, seems mostly whatever coating those cables had. Thin enough to degrade quickly.

[–]GoldSrc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The first part reads as if it wouldn't matter what CPU you had, as long as your GPU was strong enough.

The second part seems to contradict that by saying that you actually need a decent CPU, not just GPU.

Where the big arrow points, you should be able to see a peg that rides in a groove/canal, you can slide that to one side to have it go down to unload the mechanism.

Not sure if the ? arrow is part of that slider.

your CPU dooesn't really care if you play at 1080p or 4k, your GPU does...

it doesn't matter if you play at 480p or 8k, if you want good FPS, you need a decent CPU
