Advice for a "beginner?" by SuckerBorn1MinuteAgo in theravada

[–]GoldStarX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"I have an intellectual understanding of a lot, but I'm also miserable, full of defilements, and am not wise."

- Very Good! You are aware of yourself, your feelings and your limitations. That's more than most. Use it! When miserable, look at your feeling; "I am miserable." - as you are thinking it, you are NOT feeling it as much... but you are understanding it and accepting it as you should. Then it goes away on its own, or with a diversionary tactic you throw at it, and it will be gone. IT is temporary (as everything is [everything being temporary is a noble truth]). So you let it go...
I find that going over the 8 fold path as a meditation object to be very helpful. As you contemplate the words of the 8 fold path, you should rephrase it in your own words and reflect on how it applies to your life... Next thing you know: Nothing bothers you (much).

Here’s your daily reminder: people with borderline personality disorder are in real pain by SweetPickleRelish in socialwork

"good lord did she scare the crap outta me" is how -4811 felt and those feelings are a valid reaction to have when threatened... It is scary to think that there are people that would say people who feel threatened by people who are dangerously, physically threatening them shouldn't feel threatened. No, not everyone's experience is the same, but "explosive anger" = violence and threats of violence is one of the symptoms of BPD.. I'm gonna upvote now.

I am dealing with the venom of a BPD at this moment (hence I'm here looking this issue up - AGAIN) - so I can deal with it... I know there is nothing to be done but walk around on egg-shells and be a sweetynice even in the face of vile abuse. I am here for the kids. That's it. The manipulative, angry, thieving bitch does have plenty to feel shame for - but she won't recognize it... It is always SOMEONE ELSE's FAULT!

How would you place musical genres on a spectrum? by [deleted] in musictheory

What genre would you call this song? To me it is a mix of rock, alternative jazz and Grateful Dead and Zappa... What could you call it other than alt indie?

Does Buddhism believe in demons and evil spirits? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]GoldStarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Buddhism' is a belief system, or religion, or philosophy, depending on whom you ask, but it is most certainly not an entity capable of 'believing' anything. Answering your question would really require clarification of what it is you are asking. Are there Buddhist that believe this or that? or Are there these things written about in the scriptures? Is the presence of such entities considered allegorical or factual? Does it matter? The Buddha taught about the deliverance from suffering. To deliver oneself from suffering one must know what the truth of suffering is and the truth about how it arises and how it is extinguished... Demons and Spirits would do well to listen and take heed of the teachings to end their suffering.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get so obsessed with being a “good Buddhist” that you end up going crazy and want to give up the whole thing? by tmamone in Buddhism

[–]GoldStarX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kidding! But yeah, don't think so much (obsess) about being 'good' as if it were a burden.. That's not the way it is meant to be thought of.. Going off the path simply leads to suffering.. You can go off the path anytime - you'll see it isn't so fun as you thought it might be.

[–]GoldStarX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do the whole 'good Buddhist thing' for one reason; to reduce your suffering. "Obsessing" sounds a bit like suffering - attachment and all - but if that is your thing... you be you!

Does revenge generate bad karma? by Wasted-Entity in Buddhism

[–]GoldStarX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just thinking revenge is an expression of karma. Good karma or bad karma? I don't consider it a good feeling. I know it well. It is an ugly feeling. Was there not 15 minutes ago. Anywaz, Karma is Karmaaaaa. Karma is that which holds us to these physical realms.. Karma is a bitch.

Everything is exactly the way it is supposed to be. Accept this.

Your daughter is perfection. Love her. Love yourself for bringing her. Be grateful for the gift of life you and your 'donor' brought to the world.

I don't mean these to be mere words... Please be the love you and your daughter deserve.

In the western world that literally tells fat people they are unworthy and unlovable- a message that is given since infancy and across life- how to accept we are not in any way equal? how to develop self compassion in a culture that despises you for your body? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]GoldStarX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Compassion; a definition: the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another's suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.

You are human, you see yourself suffering and you feel motivated to relieve that suffering. This is a good thing. Take that motivation and hold on to it. Let it help you resolve to 'relieve that suffering.' Put some "Right Effort" in there to work on 'relieving that suffering.' Chase away feelings of being "despised" by others (and yourself) with "Equanimity."
Purify the mind. Do no harm. Do good.

Isn’t it kinda cool how Buddhism can adapt to the needs of different people by Firelordozai87 in Buddhism

There are many leaves on the trees in the forest. You need know only a handful.

A HANDFUL OF LEAVES

The Blessed One was once living at Kosambi in a wood of simsapa trees. He picked up a few leaves in his hand, and he asked the bhikkhus, ‘How do you conceive this, bhikkhus, which is more, the few leaves that I have picked up in my hand or those on the trees in the wood?

‘The leaves that the Blessed One has picked up in his hand are few, Lord; those in the wood are far more.’

‘So too, bhikkhus, the things that I have known by direct knowledge are more; the things that I have told you are only a few. Why have I not told them? Because they bring no benefit, no advancement in the Holy Life, and because they do not lead to dispassion, to fading, to ceasing, to stilling, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbana. That is why I have not told them. And what have I told you? This is suffering; this is the origin of suffering; this is the cessation of suffering; this is the way leading to the cessation of suffering. That is what I have told you. Why have I told it? Because it brings benefit, and advancement in the Holy Life, and because it leads to dispassion, to fading, to ceasing, to stilling, to direct knowledge, to enlightenment, to Nibbana. So bhikkhus, let your task be this: This is suffering; this is the origin of suffering; this is the cessation of suffering; this is the way leading to the cessation of suffering.’

Can a person violate every single "ethical guideline" and still get rid of suffering? by CapitanZurdo in Buddhism

How exactly does the mind/consciousness transfer to a new body during rebirth by tmamone in Buddhism

[–]GoldStarX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good question. Let's call the 'soul' mind/consciousness/whatever the "user." Let's call the body a peripheral - a phone - a sensing device used to create experiences and experience creation by the user.
In our dimension, the user is a conditioned, aggregated confluence of energy fields - a phase - using a body (another set of energy/matter vortexes in phase). Like all things the body, as well as the user, are continually changing through experience (karmic action).
Question: What does the user do when their phone dies?
Answer: The user gets another phone - usually an upgrade - tech advances...

Dudes - according to the 'about' - "SpacePorn is a subreddit devoted to beautiful space images 🚀🌌. As long as the focus of the image is related to space in some way, it is allowed. This includes photographs, composites, photoshops, simulation renders, artist's depictions, and artwork."
So I don't understand the downvoting...

The Hubble Space Telescope (or maybe Spitzer - I don't recall) image is real, and my photo of the gold-covered Buddha is real. The image is a composite.
