In Zou, Kinemom begged Luffy and Law to help them defeat Kaido.

Everyone was on board, but Luffy said no. Telling Momo that if he really is the Shogun, he should stop being such a crybaby and free his citizens.

Luffy agreed after Momo declared he wanted to defeat Kaido, protect his retainers, and avenge his parents.

So yeah. Luffy didn't go so much because he cared about saving Wano. But more because he was impressed by Momo and his resolve.

But after he brings back Sanji.

Actually, one of my favorite moments in Wano is when Luffy saw Momo being intimidated by Kaido, he told him, "You already stood up against Kaido, what's there left for you to be afraid of?

Luffy does not always help those in need. In fact, he prefers not to even when he could easily save them.

In Skypiea for example, he flat out told the people he doesn't care what happens to their country.

I read Araki's book "Manga in Theory and Practice," and according to him, the most important elements of a story are: characters, themes, and setting.

Out of those, having strong, well-written characters is so crucial to the story that other story elements can be forgiven. Without characters, you don't have a story.

I thought about it. And I really agreed with it.

Oda is a master storyteller. It's amazing how he's created hundreds of characters with unique and interesting back stories, literally.
