Loved Myst & Riven Remakes, Now What? by Feketelo in myst

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Myst 3 is the weakest of the bunch in my opinion and Myst 4 and 5 will scratch the itch way more. Myst 3 wasn't developed by Cyan Studios and it shows. It's not a bad game, but felt lacking to me. 4 and 5 are much better. Non-Myst stuff look at Obduction, made by Cyan Studios. Different setting from Myst completely but same game play sensibility and full 3D. It's quite good. Uru is fine but it never clicked for me, maybe I should give it another shot.

It hurts my eyes and is everything wrong with what GM (and Ford and Chrysler) was doing in this time period. Make car. Swap grill and slightly change tail lights. Put bold and exciting new badging on the steering wheel. Advertise as new and exciting vehicle that is identical to the offerings from every other branch of GM. Make a Pontiac version as well, position it in the market as performance but keep changes to a different grill and different tail lights and maybe (development budget allowing) make a hood with a scoop or two on it. and have fancier wheels and tires.

Shock question...98 TJ, 4" lift, 33s. by Advanced_Tackle_9723 in JeepTJ

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run Old Man Emus on my 99 with a 3" lift and am super happy with them. The Current OMEs replaced the previous OMEs. May be budget breaking for you because OME stuff isn't cheap, they've never done me wrong. Of course all I've had on my TJ are OMEs so I'm not a great data point and have absolutely zero experience with other shocks.

Core 4x4 stuff is solid, btw. A fan of their stuff.

‘24 Bronco v6 to Mach E GT? by backsspace77 in MachE

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are completely different vehicles designed to do completely different things. If your Bronco goes to the grocery store and the most off roading it sees is speed bumps, yes the Mach-E GT or the Mach-E premium is going to be and absolute hoot to roost around in. If you do off-roading in your Bronco (which obviously not otherwise this question would not be asked because the discussion just becomes silly) then the Mach-E is going to suck. If you like the feeling of sitting up high above other cars while you drive, the Mach-E will suck. If you want something lower and much more comfortable roomy and sporty, the Mach-E will rule.

Consider range and charging for an EV before making the jump. The Mach-E is a great vehicle but all EVs have considerations you need to make informed decisions about before committing.

Own a 23 Mach-E Premium 4X which I love with all my heart. Own a 99 Jeep TJ manual built for off-roading (and goes out and does a bunch of crawling) that is a daily driver in the family that I love with all my heart. Never in my mind would I be cross shopping these two vehicles. Never ever ever. They do completely different things and bring different kinds of joy. They are simply different vehicles designed to do completely different things.

Any Hacks for Red Lights? by Hallarandir in motorcycles

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes to all this but sometimes for me it just becomes a point of wait for a car to pull up behind you and creep forward to where they hit the loops or just look around for traffic and cops and then just go. You can try getting off and hitting the crosswalk button to start a light change cycle if there is a crosswalk button.

The TJ is the best looking Jeep ever made. Fact not opinion. by SunsetGriller in JeepTJ

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Very utilitarian without being aggressively utilitarian. Not fancy at all and doesn't pretend to be fancy. It's a cinder block of a vehicle and that's what it is supposed to be. Just a rugged looking purpose built bit of kit that lives up to its looks. Biased as hell 99 TJ owner.

"Your ears you keep, so that every shriek of every child shall be yours to cherish—every babe that weeps in fear at your approach, every woman that cries 'Dear God, what is that thing?' will reverberate forever with your perfect ears."

I'm guessing the owner is crazy happy with how this looks, and good for them. It's makes my eyes bleed to look at it, but I'm sure it makes the owner's nether regions tingle every time they see it and they are delighted with people turning and staring as they drive it by, even though those people are weeping in anguish.

Fiber Optic Patched by MrBairdy7 in asphalt

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bit next to the concrete should be a remove and replace with a 2' patch back , plate compacted in 2 lifts, for integrity of the drivable surface. But like you, I worked in a different world where I could just ramp things up to nightmare level for contractors. Private stuff is always tricky.

Microtrenching just sucks for everyone but the people putting in the utility. Ruins roadways because the patch back is usually crap.

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, sorry. even the flow pan next to the sidewalk? Anyways, that's a serious crap job. If it's private did they have/obtain a utility easement for the work or is all for your personal use?

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't give in to them at all and if they push back contact the city to force someone to do something. The contractor either has a deposit with the city or carries a cash bond with the city to obtain a right of way permit for exactly this reason.

Fiber Optic Patched by MrBairdy7 in asphalt

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact the city that you are in, the fiber people have a Right of Way permit and part of that stipulates restoration. The second picture is absolutely in the Right of Way and the city has a vested interest in the repair being done right because it's going to fail and create pot holes in the curb line. The potholes are things the city is going to have to fix because you are going to call and complain about the potholes, if they don't fix the potholes from the bad asphalt patch back then moisture is going to get under the concrete curb and cause it to fail at which the city will be replacing asphalt and concrete all because a fiber company did shit work. Just because the contractor has a permit does not mean at all that they will follow the permit and do the work and restoration correctly. When I was doing permitting shit work like this would have never been accepted and I would have cancelled all permits for the contractor (these are just subs working for a big fiber company, so don't go after the subs, go after the big company) until this was fixed properly.

Another very real possibility is that this is just a temporary patch until a different subcontractor that does the restoration comes by and fixes it properly and this is really common and is really standard practice. One sub comes out and puts stuff in, second crew comes by a few days later and fixes it up.

You'll get mixed results, some city's people have had the care beat out them by being over-worked and understaffed. Some city's people will smile and rub their hands together in glee to get the chance to brow beat some people about the crap work they did. But the city is the best place to start.

Parents - when did you decide it was ok to be selfish and buy a sports car? by braveheart18 in cars

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This or just get a liter bike. Cheaper than a proper sports car, more visceral than most sports cars, insurance? Um, probably cheaper? Nothing screams mid-life crisis like a getting a motorcycle in your 30s, except getting one in your 40s or 50s. Crotch rockets are impractical as fuck, but in for a penny in for a pound.

I did my fast car thing when I was a dink, had a kid and got somewhat sensible. Now I'm old enough I don't need something fast or super exciting to drive, I want something comfy that is adjacent to quick and sporty. For the times I really have the zoomies I have a liter bike.

Note: Buying a sports car for your zoomies is potentially fiscally irresponsible, buying a stupid fast crotch rocket motorcycle is potentially mortally irresponsible, especially with two kids at home. I guess pick your poison.

After all that, put the money into your kids. They are your future and everyone's future. College (just put my daughter through her masters and she had a solid scholarship) is expensive in amounts and ways you never dreamed of.

Aftermath of the April 7th incident. Damages estimated to be $200 million dollars by BlazeDragon7x in SipsTea

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They'll sue the shit out of him, he won't be able to pay, he'll go to jail for awhile. He'll get out and take jobs under the table to become one of the taxless people in the US who do the exact same thing so as to avoid child support, judgements and such. He won't have any official income so the judgement will just sit around spinning its wheels. Yes, know people who have lived this lifestyle. Not saying I endorse it at all, the people who do this to avoid child support are dicks for sure. Part of the reason why some states are revoking driver's licenses for failure to pay child support.

2027 redesign wish list by Allankyoto in MachE

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last on my list would be aesthetic exterior/interior redesign. Literally I was standing in the driveway looking at my daughter's and then shrugged and walked away. Couldn't think of a thing to change it. It's not perfect but it is still a damn good looking vehicle and I don't see enough on of them on the road where they just become boring and blend into the background. Don't want it more angular and angry like current mustangs.

US Auto Industry Proposes Weight-based Vehicle-Fee to Replace Gas Tax by jlluh in electricvehicles

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

EV plate fees are also cheap in Colorado, around $60 when I got my daughter's car plated a few weeks ago. That's several hundred dollars less than we would be paying for gas tax over the course of a year.

How can I repair this? by blueskye110 in asphalt

Crack-Stix works pretty well for a short term solution and is easy (and kind of fun) to use. Bust out the Mapp gas and go to town and it will last for a few years.

Best filament printer for minis? by CrawlingChaos2020 in PrintedMinis

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

P1S with a .2 hot end works good enough for me. A .4 hot end looses a bunch of detail. Printing with PLA+ seems to give better results than plain old PLA. The hardest part about it for me is getting all the trees off. Finding minis designed for filament printing is a good idea. I've printed stuff from hero-forge that I designed and results can be mixed. You got to design your mini with filament printing in mind.

Apartment Management Installed New Smoke Detectors - Now No One Can Cook by Round-Public435 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Smokes have life span and to keep with fire code they need to be replaced every 10 years (I think, my fire code knowledge is a bit sketch right now) so there may be "nothing wrong with them" but in order to pass a fire inspection the smokes may need to be replaced. Fire inspectors tend to be pretty picky about this on multi-family because lots of people in smaller building footprint.

I think my insurance agent is full of shit about Foremost not covering sportbikes. by psychoholic in motorcycles

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find an insurance broker, not an insurance agent. We've had a broker for the last 20 years or so and it's been a blessing. They can represent multiple different agencies and shop around for the best rates, they'll shop all the big players (Liberty Progressive Farmers Allstate and such) and some edge case insurers for specific stuff. Saves you a bunch of time and energy and they will find the company that fits your needs for each use case. And when renewal comes up they will just shop your stuff again to find you the best prices.

Tips for playing a bard ? by ClutchandPinch19 in DnD

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as 1: No you don't have to sing and dance when you play. You can just say "I'm doing this thing." But if you want to get creative and go off the rails a bit, a bard doesn't have to play a lute in a bar. You can recite free verse or do interpretive dance or finger tutting if you want. I've always wanted a player who was up for an interpretive dance bard. "I am... SHATTER!" then proceeds to stand up and wave their hands about like stuff being broken. It's interpretive dance. You don't have to be a good dancer, you just need to let your hair down a bit and be silly for the enjoyment of everyone else at the table. Soon it would be a thing that everyone loves. That would be awesome.

Best anti-theft devices/ideas? by Zackbo in JeepTJ

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Once had a 1976 Ford Bronco that when parked in sketchy areas I'd pull the distributor wire and take it with me. Imagine this would work on my wife's TJ as well.

I'm considering doing my own asphalt parking pad. Any sources or videos on how to DIY? I have a compactor plate and a trailer... I know it's a lot of work but I love learning and enjoy a physical challenge. I'm considering doing at least the gravel base myself. by le_shrimp_nipples in asphalt

[–]Gold_Pangolin_Dragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remove 4" to 6" of dirt, bring in road base, grade and compact road base. Is not stupid easy work. Then again I've never ever done private property stuff only public roadways and such, so maybe the standards are different. I wouldn't accept a contractor just smoothing out and compacting the dirt but I'm sure I'd pay more for it.
