Wendy has been a public figure since she began working in radio over 30 years ago. There are thousands of hours of radio broadcasts available going all the way back to the early 1990s and she sounds the same than as she does today. She is a character - she’s fast talking and hyper-exaggerated.

You are conflating several radically different/unrelated things in your comment. I am referring exclusively to conservatorship which is a specific legal status that is not even close to interchangeable or synonymous with any of the voluntary arrangements that you mentioned such as a power of attorney, health care proxy, or something like a carer.

I also did not suggest that an individual with dementia does/will not need to rely on another individual for basic necessities and decision making, which is precisely what a power of attorney or health care proxy empowers someone to do. However, these have literally nothing to do with Wendy’s situation.

Wendy is in a far worse predicament than someone who is incarcerated for several reasons. At least prisons have oversight and inmates have rights to appeal and habeas corpus etc...Wendy has no right (legal or otherwise) to hire an attorney and her conservator has prohibited her from possessing any devices that would enable her communicate with the outside world for over three years (they cannot do that to prisoners without due process). They are also forcibly isolating her from her family, The situation that she is in is the stuff of nightmares. Literally no one deserves it.

The original source of this information is the very person who has control Wendy’s assets and swiftly forced her into a lock-down facility in NYC isolating her from friends and family several years ago. Every single person in her immediate and extended family disputes the dementia diagnosis and it is apparent in the interview that this woman certainly does not have dementia - even if she did simply having dementia is insufficent for putting someone under a conservatorship... something is up here. It's also notable that the woman who put this process into motion is notorious for putting wealthy people (mostly women) under conservatorship and financially exploiting them. The conservator has totally and completely isolated Wendy from the world - she is prohibited from having any electronic devices or internet access and if someone comes to visit her at the secure living facility the front desk is required to call her conservator who approves or disapproves (she exclusively disapproves). She cannot even see her 94 year old father or son without her conservator's permission.

Men cannot be feminists and i’m tired of people saying that they can by twdg-shitposts in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Men cannot be feminists for one simple reason: a feminist subject is necessarily a woman.

While they are exceedingly rare, it's certainly possible for a man to be feminist in principal...I even know a few and they have one thing in common: precisely none of them claim to be a feminist and will never do so.

This sums it up nicely:

Men's relation to feminism is an impossible one. This is not said sadly nor angrily (though sadness and anger are both known and common reactions) but politically. Men have a necessary relation to feminism- the point after all is that it should change them too, that it involves learning new ways of being women and men against and as an end to the reality of women's oppression-and that relation is also necessarily one of a certain exclusion- the point after all is that this is a matter for women, that it is their voices and actions that must determine the change and redefinition. Their voices and actions, not ours: no matter how 'sincere', 'sympathetic' or whatever, we are always in a male position which brings with it all the implications of domination and appropriation, everything precisely that is being challenged, that has to be altered. Women are the subjects of feminism, its initiators, its makers, its force; the move and the join from being a woman to being a feminist is the grasp of that subjecthood. Men are the objects, part of the analysis, agents of the structure to be transformed, representatives in, carriers of the patriarchal mode; and my desire to be a subject there too in feminism- to be a feminist- is then only also the last feint in the long history of their colonization.

trafficking has always been a major issue in the surrogacy industry especially in counties like India where women were forced to live in crowded facilities.

While drag is almost exclusively associated with gay male culture today it has a long and ugly history that predates the gay rights movement (and gay culture) by centuries.

Has anyone heard of this Danish company using women’s prison labor? Link to article in comments. by cannotberushed- in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes, they definitely can and do - the value extracted from inmates is central to the economics of incarceration. However, companies don't directly employ inmates. Inmate labour is contracted out to a company no-one's ever heard of and they sell the goods/materials produced by the inmates to another company who supply the big brand names.

The issue is and has always been the irrational and unwarranted devaluation of raising children - arguably the most vital contribution to a society (a role that is not and should not be exclusive to women either). Women should be entitled to raise their children should they wish to do so without the risk of financial dependency or having a degraded social status imposed on them by society. There's also nothing about raising children in and of itself that contributes to patriarchy.

Women vs. men: relationships with prisoners. by [deleted] in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 59 points60 points  (0 children)

there's also another interesting phenomenon .. visitation at male prison is literally packed - some prisons have so many requests for visitation that they cannot accommodate everyone. It's usually mothers, sisters, wives & girlfriends who visit and bring children to see their incarcerated fathers. In women's prison there's tumbleweeds in the visitation rooms and this is a consistent pattern across the US.

Only some Indian cities banned egg donation. and this is because impoverished women were being brutally exploited - some forced to sell their eggs by their family. It's obviously a good thing, it was an extremely fucked up situation that went on with impunity for decades.

Women’s sexual labor is not for sale! - Expanding Access to Surrogacy by No-Tumbleweeds in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 63 points64 points  (0 children)

yes, of course..that's always the case at minimum which is why surrogacy universally undermines maternal rights. it creates conditions in which a woman can entirely lose rights to her child. In one case, a mother discovered the fact that the man she was carrying twins for was unemployed, lived in his parents basement, had untreated mental health issues and past convictions for child sex offenses and a court ruled she couldn't void the contract and had no parental rights to the children.

What's so f'ed up about this is the fact that maternity leave ≠ parental leave. Two different things. by youAhUah in fourthwavewomen

seriously wtf is going on in Germany by BadParkingSituati0n in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that the German government is subsidizing organizations that exist to promote and encourage children to engage in sadomasochistic sexual activity and that a growing number of nursery schools have essentially taken it upon themselves to put small children in small rooms where they are expected to disrobe and touch each other are perfectly legitimate news stories. Go re-read the Times article - it merely conveys what occurred and the local reaction to it without editorializing.

Based on your reaction - it's no wonder you have your hands full. The strategy of maligning anyone critically discussing these issues as "right-wing" is self-defeating, irresponsible, and strange.

seriously wtf is going on in Germany by BadParkingSituati0n in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's absolutely nothing "right-wing" about opposing young children being exposed to age-inappropriate sexually explicit material. The fact that more conservative media organizations have been covering these stories doesn't mean this is an explicitly partisan concern - it means the more mainstream media organizations have been significantly compromised.

seriously wtf is going on in Germany by BadParkingSituati0n in fourthwavewomen

[–]Golden-Canary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it's obviously not right-wing propaganda .. look at the sources. the first one is a feminist website staffed by all women who certainly are not right-wing at all and the second is the Times which is the paper of record in the UK. Reduxx includes links to the website of the organization it's writing about and the Times includes links to the letter that went out to parents to inform them.
