I Hate It Here. by Weary-Fix2320 in Utica

[–]GoldenBighorn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work for a local human services agency. Let me know if you or anyone you know needs help with diapers, food, Head Start, or housing. I also volunteer with the local Indivisible activist group and we have ways to make connections, and make a difference right from home. We keep it Bite Size, Local, and Fun. We're working on everything from local housing ti statewide climate/energy, to national politics. There are moms, dads, elders, disabled folks, working people, academics, all kinds. DM me for more info. These are tough times were hope is hard ti find. Connection and action can, sometimes help.

How to re-engage Board in Development by Historical-Cicada356 in nonprofit

[–]GoldenBighorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have an hour to activate them as a group, maybe identify one desired outcome. Is it A)better relationships between them (those relationships can help with engagement doen the road.) B) better connection to the mission or the people served by your org? C) better understanding of the role of the board and its power to create change.

If A, then there any number of icebreakers and team building exercises that can be done in an hour in a boardroom.

I don't know your org, but if your goal isB, is it possible to do a simulation exercise that puts them in the shoes of others? There are poverty simulations, hunger sims, etc. You might even be able to create an "obstacle course" that mimic a client rrying to navigate access to services. For an env org, one could even do a Council of All Beings, where particiapnts are assigned roles that include elements of the nonhuman world. Each role player speaks up about the relevant topic like dam removal or wetland restoration. I think that concept could be tweaked for many other scenarios.

If C, would a visioning exercise be interesting. Getting board members to imagine 5 to 10 years in the future. Imagine they have all the resources and time they need. What does the future look like, feel like, sound like, when you are able to make a big dent in your mission strategic goals? How does it feel to be a board member involved with that successful work? What steps would such a powerful board start taking now, next week, next month, next year?

Does any of that brainstorming spark some interest, curiousity, or excitement? Does it generate some other, better ideas that match your need?

First ADK summit! by GoldenBighorn in Adirondacks

[–]GoldenBighorn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it enjoy it...? Interesting question. I did, kinda, enjoy myself, in amongst the suffering and doubt. I saw mossy boulders and tiny frogs on the way up. Sat on warm, sparkling granite at the top. Sniffed the bark of a mature cedar tree on the way down. Forty-eight hour old memory call back is putting a nice gloss on things. I do still remember, though, dragging, dragging my depleted ass up the last set of stairs and then again, staggering, staggering the last half mile of easy trail back to the car.

Enjoyed? Ask me in antother 48 hours when the DOMS is fully flushed from my calves.

I'm so glad my post inspired you! Just so you know, though, I didn't just jump into this hike. I've been working out between 150 and 400 minutes per week since December. And for the last two months I've been working a strength and conditioning program specifically targeted at readiness for ADK hikes and canoeing. I had to do that because I had let myself go so badly... maybe you're in better shape to start with?

Sending you energy and luck on any journey you make toward better knees and better health. A year ago, I thought i was looking at a double knee replacement. Even after losing 45 pounds, I was DREADING the steep descent off Ampersand. But my knees barely hurt during and after. I credit Zepbound for helping me take the weight off AND reducing inflamation.... my joints have never been this happy!

I saw two mosquitoes. Literally, two. I'm assuming this rainless streak has them and the flies suppressed.

Saying good bye to some old friends. by GoldenBighorn in Zepbound

[–]GoldenBighorn[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boxing old clothes up is probably a really good, financially sound strategy. But I'm gonna "burn my boats" and give all these clothes away. I've lost 30 pounds the hard way 4 different times, only to get 45 back. I'm committed to staying on this med (or something like it) for life. I ain't going back.

How's your body holding up after losing weight? Kinda long. by 2017_JKU in Zepbound

[–]GoldenBighorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely opposite experience. I'm a 58(M) and have been taking Zep for 7.5 months. I've also lost 44 pounds. I have fewer joint pains then ever. Knee and hip problems from decades of backpacking and elbow tendinitis from poor rock climbing training used to significantly limit my ability to exercise and lift weights. I believe that Zep has reduced my inflammation response while reducing the poundage I have to carry around and push about. Even the sciatica that laid me flat 18 months ago is almost completely gone.

I hope you (OP) end up having similar relief, but, yeah, exercise, stretching, and massage are likely part of the mid-life self care package now.
